- JuanMarco31Toulouse, France15,061 contributionsIt Dominates the Village and the BayAt the top of the village after climbing the pebble streets, we discover this white church similar to all the fishermen's houses. In Gothic style it was built from the 16th century and finished in the 18th century. Inside you can admire a magnificent baroque altarpiece all in gilding dating from 1725. On its left is a prayer room. The stained glass windows and the organ are located above the entrance portalVisited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 26, 2024
- Reiselust112Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany2,615 contributionssmall church towers over the town and can be seen on the winding approachCadaqués is easy to navigate. Even on the winding approach you can see the church, which stands above the old town. The carefully restored Gothic church of Santa María with its white façade, which houses a magnificent Baroque altar, is worth seeing. Modernist architecture has also left its own mark on some of the town's most remarkable buildings, such as the Casa Serinyena. From up here you also have a beautiful view of the sea.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024
- El-Gordito-1869Cologne, Germany737 contributionsVery worthy & white church on the highest point of the old town center - with huge altarpiece & ancient organ !The baroque altarpiece of the church is exactly 12 meters wide and 23 meters (!) high ... and I know it quite well because I have visited this church over more than 30 years & countless times ... and also - to honor this church & cadasques - have personally created- and illustrated the de.Wikipedia article (Santa Maria (Cadaqués)). - By inserting a boring 1 euro coin (-1- €) every visitor can illuminate the huge altarpiece (...the sculptor Pau Costa and Joan Torras...) wonderfully for several seconds (...just enough time for the obligatory photos, which are tolerated here). - The organ of the church of Josep Boscà dates from the late 17th century. - Otherwise, the church looks quite simple from the outside, but very worthy ... and is absolutely dominant on the highest point of the old town centre of Cadaques ... and could now really do with (!) a fresh / white paint. - From the forecourt of the church you have a wonderful view of the blue sea and the countless small & anchoring boats. The most beautiful view of the church itself can be enjoyed from the sea ... for example from the tourist boats "Els Blaus" or the "Don Pancho" ... coming from Roses & landing in Cadaques. - The short & quite steep ascent over ancient cobblestones (!) to the church is (...for us...) always mandatory ... and also good for body & especially. Soul ! --- (After that, however, for us it is immediately & very profane downhill ... to the bar "Casino" by the sea ... on a always very well cooled & "deserved Estrella dam on tap ... of the great Spanish people !")Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2024
- Jean-Luc B81 contributionsA white and relaxing churchThis all-white church is located on a height overlooking Cadaques, the view from the front of the church is very beautiful and relaxing. The interior of the church is surprising with a huge baroque gilded wooden ensemble. On the left there is an oratory arranged for silence and prayer.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024

The Santa Maria Church sits atop the old town Cadaques. It's accessed via picturesque steep narrow cobbled streets.
Whitewashed simple Baroque facade hides a magnificent (not expected) altarpiece made of gilded wood, very rich in details.
From the terrace in front of the entrance are great elevated views of Cadaques with pleasant guitar music we enjoyed from a local musician.

Església de Santa Maria is the iconic church located in Cadaqués, a very tiny town in Costa Brava Region, in the North of Catalonia. The church is located in a high point, so it is very easy to see it from all places of Cadaqués. Also orobably it is the high building in the town. It was built in the 17 and 18th Centuries in a gothic-baroque style. From the entrance of the church, you can see very nice views of the coast and the town. A very recommendable visit.

Lovely barroco's art! It was near our hotel. Lovely cats over there! We went there to aprecciate the old architecture and see how religion was represented over this time. The entry was amazing! You can see Jesus everywhere. Also there's a confess room where you go with no shoes because it's a holy place. Silent and dark church.

Cadaqués is a lovely village with narrow cobblestone streets and a lovely church with very beautiful ornaments. Dali used to visit here a lot, a many other artists. It is not far from Port Lligat where we visited The residence of Dali.

Cadaques gets rave reviews in the guidebooks, but it is difficult and time-consuming getting there, along winding mountain roads, and we found the town a disappointment. The church (Esglesia de Santa Maria) was closed for cleaning or repairs, so we couldn't go in. In the town itself, the beach is small and rocky; the town commercial and touristy. It is very picturesque, but more from a distance than up close. There are many prettier, more pleasant and more accessible towns and beaches along the Costa Brava, like Calella de Palafrugell and, especially, Tossa de Mar.

this was not a planned visit. we were just walking around the small town of Cadaqués and stumbled on this church. we walked in casually not expecting much but was completely awestruck by what we saw when we entered. this altar was both large in size and in splendour, especially when it is fully lit by the many spotlights. there were many smaller altars left and right of the main nave as expected in a gothic design church. as a tip...remember to turn around after viewing the main altar and look at the choir loft! definitely recommended!

Quite a climb through the narrow streets of Cadaques. But on tentatively opening the door to this stunning church I was totally dumbstruck.
What an amazing altar, and all the pictures and relligous icons all around it.
We love visiting all holy churches and cathedrals whenever we travel. Having not read anything about this one we only climbed the steps because we could see it so clearly from far away.
It looked so uninteresting from a distance that we had no idea how stunning it would turn out to be inside. A true 'Wow'
The views across the bay and surrounds from the top are also very pretty and well worth a few photos

The altarpiece is beautiful with many statues and covers all the back wall of the church. There was music played (guitar) and this was bringing a lot of peace and serenity in that church. It’s worth visiting slowly and discover the stained glass windows and the small chapels.

A plain white stone church overlooking the bay od Cadaques, but how surprising to walk in! An interior that takes the breath away. The golden, spiritual treasurehouse has infused Dali's work and that of other artists. A must-see.

Nice view from the top of the Esglesia. That made it worth the hike. The inside was dark and unlike other reviewers, I was not particularly impressed. But I would go back up just to get some photos of the lovely town in the afternoon.

Bonjour,
vous omettez de préciser à quelle heure : pour que cela soit optimal, il faut le voir à une heure précise, car le soleil se déplaçant on ne peut pas avoir cet effet toute la journée !
