I enjoyed this renovated castle. The self guided walk was interesting to see the ramparts and the views. I was stunned by the beautiful book collection- Medieval books, hand painted and printed. Unusually well preserved.

We enjoyed the self-guided visit through the castle, the views in all directions, and the exhibits. Highly recommended if one is passing through Ponferrada.

I had the castle penciled down for a visit.
The exterior impresses much more then its interior. In fact, the internal area is just a field surrounded by the walls. However, it is worth the visit. The views of the church and the town is quite nice.

This is what the Camino de Santiago is all about. I stopped by here in September 2019 on my Camino. I had been reading so much history about the Camino and how the Knights Templar protected the pilgrims in their journey here to Santiago. This was a dream to see the living history here!!!

Do not miss the archives and the Templar library with hand drawn and gilded manuscripts and books! One of the largest in the world dating back to the 1100 AD when the Templar's were around. Highly really recommend must stop.

There is a hostel up the street from the castle that I could not find on the map but was wonderful and had great Spanish tortillas.

While it’s late December and freezing cold it’s a good time to visit Ponferrada and specially the old centre with the main attraction the castle. As it was late we couldn’t visit the castle inside however we will surely do one of the next days. The caste is really impressive with a great history and well preserved. Restorations still going on but wouldn’t bother at all. After the visit there are lots of cafes bars arround to warm a bit.

Although part of the castle is under renovation, the scale of the remaining part is still quite imposing. Most of the descriptions are in Spanish, but you can rent an audio guide in English for 3 euros, which is well worth it. The most impressive part of the trip is to the templar’s library, where there are some of the most stunning bibles, books and drawings. From the high walls of the castle, one can see the adjacent Sil River and hills surrounding Ponferrada.

Entrance fee is 6€ and free entry on every Wednesday! Is a good place to stop by for a visit if you’re interested in history of the place and way of life in the past. They are having ongoing restoration of the castle bit by bit, so maybe during time of your visit you might be restricted to certain small parts of the castle. However, most parts are all done up, I believe. Many small exhibitions around the castle explaining to you the history of the region and so on. Nice views along the walls of the castle.

It was a good visit but I left not knowing much about what the Knight Templar actually did or how they lived. There was some info in Spanish that was not part of the English audio translation. We learned more about the building and town. The library collection was amazing.
