Visit of the historical part of Ponferrada.

The old medieval church of Santa María, who has being erected at the end of the 12th century. It had a bell tower with four bells. The whole church was criticized, claiming that it was small, badly built, and indecent. So for this reason, in the year 1567, the Promisor of the Bishopric of Astorga allowed the town to build a new church. Shortly after, he ordered his building. The works took a start in the year 1573, but it would not be finished before the end of the 17th century, this because the works had to be paralyzed for various reasons, such as when the plague hit the interior of the Iberian Peninsula in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. But it is certainly worth a visit as well on the out- as on the inside.

This place is kind of sanctuary where you can submit your prayers to the miracolous image of the Virgin

Attracted by its tower
Jul 2016 • Couples
What attracted my attention to this basilica, was its tower. It stood out, with its many bells.

After our visit to the castle, where we saw the basilica from a distance for the first time, we ventured to find it and explore the inside of it. Once we were at the square where the basilica was located, we saw an interesting statue.

We entered inside the church and admired its magnificent doors. There were a lot of wooden benches. Something unique: The altar piece is made of polychrome wood. Behind it were amazing statues, reflecting scenes from the Bible. It was so beautiful!

The ceiling was curbed and painted in white.

As the mass was starting, we had no choice but to leave this lovely basilica. I enjoyed exploring this Basilica.

Yet another church on the Camino
Oct 2016 • Friends
If you are doing the Camino like me, by this stage you will have seen numerous churches. This isn't among the best but still nice to visit, especially since recently many of the churches that we saw weren't open, so it was good to see that this one was.

Very silent and serene, but nothing special either
Aug 2016 • Solo
My visit was of total solitude and all visitors were silent. That of itself was amazing. However, the church itself is really not all that special compared to others in the region (Burgos, Salamanca, Leon)

Lovely church spoilt by Grafiti
Jun 2016 • Solo
Huge church made from stone in the centre of old town. Very pretty Gothic altar piece and lovely cool , quite and restful place. Graffiti on walls was offensive and really spoilt the old town - ,this seems to be a problem in Spain.

Glittering Basilica
May 2016 • Couples
Very close to the castle this Basilica is well worth finding. Near the tourist office and the other side of the museo de la radio. Nice building from the outside and fairly large building and you may see many backpackers enter here to visit and get their pilgrim passports stamped. Very interesting architecture inside and stunning Altar carvings that are coloured gold. Other amazing and detailed architecture in side Chapels that are inside. Excellent Organ and really great looking ceiling. Well worth coming into the church to rest and wonder at the inside.
