I have a love/hate relationship with this winery after having been here 2 or 3 times.
Pros: The view is incredible, the food is delicious, and the staff are all very friendly. Love the property all around, and the wines range from ok to really good. Doing a tasting at the bar with the view is great!
Cons: I've tried to make reservations 3 weeks out only to find that all tasting, lunch, and tour reservations are booked for an entire weekend. Yes, the winery is probably the most popular one in Charlottesville, but that's not always a good thing. They get so crowded, it is hard to enjoy yourself. Hundreds of people everywhere and no seating to be found. What is worse is that they reach capacity and will stop you at the lower entrance until a car leaves so you can go up.
Try to go off-season during the week for tour best enjoyment. Otherwise, you'll be frustrated trying to get in and enjoy it all.

My wife and I visited Pippin Hill on our recent escape to Shenandoah and the Charlottesville area. Given we are in a pandemic and take it very seriously, we researched and made sure that all of our lodgings, restaurants, and experiences were done with respect to science and best practices. We were so impressed that this vineyard hand hand washing stations setup at the entrance and required hand washing and mask wearing through your stay while still maintaining amazing quality of service and experience. The views were amazing from one of the many socially distanced tents on the hillside(bring your own chairs and blankets for an even better experience) and enjoyed some bottles of wine and snacks for pretty much the entire day. I have to say that this was the most relaxed I have felt since the pandemic began and I want to thank the staff at Pippin Hill for making this happen.

A true "beautiful and damned" vineyard. The venue is beautiful but the staff is insulting. It was my friends birthday and I decided to dd her and her group around (including a pregnant woman...yeah crazy group right here). One can already make the assumption that my best friend was snacks and water that day. So mind you, when I wanted to buy a bottle of wine for my friends birthday, that not only was I scammed to buy 8 cans of "pelligrino" water (amounted to the same price as the wine) but I was also refused to purchase a bottle. In addition, there was a comment through in about my apparel, I am sorry, but it is incredibly unprofessional to comment on a client presence. Nevertheless, I proceeded to buy the water first, and continued to ask if I could buy a bottle, the cashier looked over to her manager and said "she still wants the bottle," and the manager looked me up and down and said "I guess we can sell you one bottle."When she handed me the bottle, she refused to give me an cups to share the bottle. I emphasized that I was sober driving my friends that this bottle was to share with everyone. She ignored me. There was no explanation as to why she didn't let me buy the bottle of wine. My advice, go to a better vineyard, spend your money elsewhere. Don't settle for this beautiful, but damned vineyard.

We had a table inside the beautiful farmhouse and were able to enjoy a tasting of some very good wine along with some excellent tapas style food. The BLT garden sliders, beef sliders, and gigantic serving of fries were all delicious. I enjoyed several of their wines especially the Zero White.

Terrific place. We had frozen Rose which was amazing. Must make reservation so dont forget that. Also there is very little shade but the grounds are so pretty. We went to five wineries and this was the one the gets the number one slot.

Pippin Hill has a restaurant as well. There is a choice between table side service or grab and go where you can sit outside. I chose inside. The red flight started with a blend. It was OK. The Cab franc was listed as such, but other grapes were blended in. One of those was a tannat which overpowered the franc and the peppery finish. The Cab sauv is actually a better Cab sauv than I have had elsewhere. And finally the award winning Wild common. Another blend. It has a smooth start then becomes a little tarter and has a nice long smooth finish. It is a dryer wine, but not bad. Then she gave me a small taste of the petit verdot. Another award winner. I did not find it exciting enough. The people were very nice and the rooms, patio and views were gorgeous.

What an amazing afternoon we enjoyed at Pippin Hill today.
While not nearly connoisseurs, my husband and I have traveled to many wine regions as far flung and varied as Napa and Tokaj and much in between. And we have never enjoyed ourselves as much as we did at Pippin Hill today.
To begin with, the scenery and grounds are just gorgeous. Stunning does not do it justice. The winery itself is spotless and has a sophisticated country aesthetic. However it was the wine, cuisine and service that made it even more of a stand out. We enjoyed two flights; one white, one red at the recommendation of our very knowledgeable, warm and engaging server, Carter. He took his time to explain his recommendations in a way that was personal, thorough and unpretentious. The food that we ordered to accompany the wonderful wine selections was gorgeously prepared, delicious and fresh and reflected the understated elegance of the fine farm ambiance. This is one of those places that you hope doesn’t get spoiled by the crowds. One note, make a reservation. We were glad that we did as they were turning people away.

Not the same as before post Covid. Lots of invasiveness in the process of actually getting to be a guest here. The setting remains absolutely stupendous so if you're willing to put up with alot of less than stellar experience points, do go! Food was underwhelming this time. Wines OK. Fortunately I did ALOT of research before we went (and this is a visitor many times over in past) because of Covid and glad I did. Made a reservation so we did get to sit on verandah and relax a bit with our food & wine.
If you've never been, go for the setting on a good weather day and do your research beforehand so you know what to expect. Lastly, probably no one wants to contend with all this so the folks serving you are just doing the best they can and following mandates...

Have been wanting to come here for a while but never made a reservation. This time we made a reservation and sat on the veranda. Totally awesome view and it was a hot hot day so sitting on the veranda was warm but tolerable. Weekends are very crowded so make a reservation unless you want to be totally in the sun. As for the wine, I was a tad disappointed. But everyone has their own likes/dislikes for wine so this is just my own opinion. Didn’t really think any of the ones we tasted were worth buying to bring home. But it was worth the trip for the overall experience.

We visited Pippin Hill in October. We made reservations and glad we did. It is a lovely property with seating both inside and out and open seating on the grass. We sat inside and the tables are socially distanced. The room had plently of windows. You pick from a pre-selected wine flight and they bring the wine to your table in pre-poured bottles and provide descriptons for each wine, although the server can answer any questions. We ordered food that was fantastic. We had a cheese platter, pasta dish and carrot cake dessert. The kitchen closes at 4:00 so we ordered when we sat down . After the tasting we wandered the lovely property, which includes a large garden. There were a lot people sitting in the yard, which had plenty of space. We visited several wineries the next day and Pippin HIll was our favorite experience.

We would like to visit Pippin Hill as part of an annual VA wine trip we do with 4 other couples - total of 10 people. Can Pippin Hill handle a nice lunch and wine tasting for our group? One member is mobility challenged (walks with cane) and stairs are difficult.

Hey y'all,
We can handle a group of that size, but advanced notice and a reservation is required. Our reservations are for a table for lunch, all tastings are performed first come, first served at one of our bars. We also have a handicap entrance if you follow the entrance road to the back of the building...not quite as beautiful, but a much shorter walk. Feel free to give us a call at 434.202.8063 and ask for Matt!
