I’ve walked the Camino Frances three times now and I look forward to a visit to this very unique stop along the Camino. What makes it different or special? You’ll find the answer as you step into this ancient church with a twist. Near the door is a very large display welcoming visitors of every faith or spiritual tradition. It is a warm living-room environment and visitors are welcome to exercise their traditions in that space, meditate or pray and to light a candle. 2 of the 3 times I visited there were cookies and coffee offered for free. On the wall prominently are photos or drawings of world spiritual leaders as diverse as Martin Luther, The Dali Lama, Mother Teresa, and St Francis.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception i Mijas is a mishmash of different construction styles. In the beginning the church was built between 1540 and 1565 on the ruins of a mosque and a castle. The bell tower is robust, the result of being the old tower of the castle. All this make the church interesting.

This church, especially interior with little corner with pictures of famous people is definitely worth to visit at least for short stop and few minutes of tranquility when walking Camino.

Mihas - just full of tourists so it’s good to get some peace within this church that is situated at the top of the town in a quieter area. This church not only provides tranquility but has some stunning features that reflect on the devotion of the Roman Catholic church. It also begs a question about the wealth of the church but that shouldn’t deter you from the opportunity for reflection, prayer or photographs - whichever you feel comfortable with.
The church, as one perhaps might expect, is beautifully kept and is a perfect antidote to the rampant tourist commercialism nearby.
On leaving the church, it’s a short stroll to the right through a small garden and then around the ramparts for some stunning views.

If you are visiting Mijas Pueblo and want to take a break from the hustle and bustle, there is no nicer place to spend a few minutes than in the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Iglesia de Immaculate Conception) beside the Bullring. It’s the parish church of Mijas (one of 4 in the Parish). It is said to be built on top of an ancient Moorish castle and had its origins in the mid-1500. The church itself is striking on the outside but even more so when you enter. It has a very ornate high altar and Sacristy and 4 ornate side altars. When they were restoring the church in early 90’s, frescoes of the Apostles, said to date back to the 1600s, were found.

The grounds and the area around the church are beautifully laid out with many fountains, lovely trees and garden areas and a lovely plaza with seats and fountains. The church is open most days. Take a walk around the gardens and you have a beautiful view of Mijas Costa and the Mediterranean with its bluey-green hues and the mountains all around Mijas. Well worth a visit.

This Church was open doors most og the time. They provide cookies, drinks, tea or coffee for the pilgrims, as well as blankets, prayers. It provides a mixure of features that wellcomes prilgrims from all denomitations. It could use some restauration, but its warmth provides whatever else is missing. After mass, the priest blessed us pilgrims and gave us a cross.
