One of the first sites you see when visiting Mijas. Although the church was closed during our visit, its exterior, the panoramic views and surrounding area was simply beautiful. At the time, you could tell Mijas was sponsoring a festival/celebration with many decorative items around. I believe it may have been a celebration of their patron, De La Pena. Mijas is definitely worth a visit and one can easily spend a day just strolling around the streets enjoying the relaxing environment.

A chapel built in the 16th century, it was built after an apparition by Mary. The chapel is inside of a cave with a beautiful altar and golden pews.

Carved from and into the rock... Underneath a hill side , its exactly what it says, It is a tiny shrine and takes about 5 mins to look about. But you should ....
Its a lovely little place and yes you can actually sit on benches and pray in front of a quaint altar, in the other room there are some artefacts to look at, and that's it.
Spend the rest of the day looking about Mijas.

so bye for now and please feel free to check out my other reviews

Visited this chapel today on the local bus from Fuengirola. A small chapel in a cave setting. Very peaceful but not a lot to see. An interesting village, only 1.55 euros from Fuengirola. A great day out nevertheless.

This is basically the old arabic cooling caves which were part of the Berber food store and water conduit that fed into Mijas (arabic word for 'stables') used by the Berbers for their horses. They were very clever inventive people and sady, no mention is made of their caves or indeed their history. You must look up the history of Al Andaluz of ehich there is no mention at all. The caves are now a shop flogging plastic relics and replicas and a coin operated candle toll under the statue of 'our lady' to put more money in.

Very disappointing with no mention of Al Andaluz or arabic history. Given that Mijas (stables) was an alcazar (fortress) and water conduit village you'd expect more :(

This humble hermitage - "Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña" - is indeed a witness of the return of Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula. It was excavated right from the rock, during the 16th century, by Mercedarian friars (a religious order devoted - at that time - to the redemption of Christian captives from the moorish rulers in Al-Andaluz). In 1586, the first apparitions of Virgin Mary on the walls of the old castle were reported and an image of Her was found, inside these same walls, hidden during the eight centuries of Islamic domination in the Iberian Peninsula. So say the legends ... Located at the heart of Mijas, "Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña" is easily reachable on foot from "Plaza de la Constitución" and no visiting fee is charged. And one last remark: "La Virgen de la Peña" is the patron saint of Mijas. A prayer, a quick visit, a few pictures and keep going. There is still a lot to see in beautiful sunny Mijas! Enjoy!

As with most attractions in Mijas it's small but has charm and character that far outweigh it's size.

It takes 2 minutes to walk in and around this tiny church which is exactly why you shouldn't miss it, it even has a small shop attached to it. It does get busy but crowds move on quickly.

Outside there is a man who sells candied nuts which are a great snack.
