- Redwolf-124Czech Republic351 contributionsGood casaIt was our first visit for a port tasting. Perhaps by chance we chose a good casa. We got 5 samples each and shared them. Beautiful setting on the first floor overlooking the river and the old town. The samples were excellent and we enjoyed it. Friendly and educated service.Visited July 2023Written July 10, 2023

Too bad for 2 table of very loud Americans….I think they should put a sign… please speak quietly…. Just spoiled the atmosphere of relaxing port tasting.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 12, 2023
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania1,897 contributionsVery Good TastingMy wife and I each had a different tasting here. Both were very good and the server did a good job of explaining them. They offer 7-8 different tastings at various price points. They were full when we arrived so we left and walked in to Calem next door. It looked very corporate-like so we returned to Kopke. They told us that it might be a 30-minutes for a table but we decided to wait. We got a table in 15 minutes and were glad we waited. Note that they don’t take reservations and do not have a wait list. Highly recommended.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023

Tastings at the oldest port wine house are expensive but the experience is formal and refined. Tasting experience was not hurried and we tasted five very good ports for 43 euros. Not cheap tasting but ports were reasonably priced in first floor store.

We chose Kopke because we could do a tasting without a tour and it was a more personalized experience. We purposely chose a late morning to visit to avoid the crowds and to have our palates fresher for the tasting.
After we choose a flight of port, we were ushered upstairs. It felt like an exclusive club, quiet with leather chairs and tables scattered about. Kristina brought over our flight and thoroughly explained each variety’s taste profiles and how it was to be served. We were also provided with water and chocolates to enhance the tasting.
Our tasting included 2 whites and 3 reds. My husband is more of a port drinker than I am, but I was very impressed with the quality of Kopkes port. Back in the USA we have never seen a white port and were eager to try it.
After about an hour of tasting and chatting with a couple seated next to us, we wanted a try an aged white port. Unfortunately, they close between 1-2pm and it was time to leave. We ended up leaving and coming back after lunch.
Kristina greeted us at the door and gave us a tasting (gratis!) of an aged white port, colheita 2003 bottled in 2022. It was outstanding and bought a bottle on the spot.

We came to Porto to look for several special bottles of port. We tasted around 35 port wines total during our week, and Kopke had the best.
We tried 12 ports at Kopke, primarily Colheita and tawny. We tasted them normally and ranked them, then blind tasted them and ranked again. Three stood out during both the regular and blind tastings: the 1966 Colheita, the 1975 Colheita and the 2018 Vintage QSL (which was sadly sold out when we went to order).
The Colheita’s had rich caramel, toasted almond and golden raisin notes and a beautiful, lingering finish. The Vintage QSL had bright, strong red fruit and raspberry - perfect for a deep chocolate dessert or reduction. I do wish we’d known the QSL wasn’t available at the time of the tasting, but they let me know the new vintage 2020 is sold in September, and the 2018 was so fantastic, I will order and try the new vintage then! In the meantime we will happily enjoy the several bottles we did order, and we highly recommend Kopke tasting room to any other port lovers visiting Porto.

We went to 11 Port Houses and this was the only negative experience. We arrived at 18:15 and we were told they were closing and told us to come back the next day (in an abrupt way) So we went back the next day at 12:45 and were told they were closing for lunch by the three staff on duty. The attitude of the staff was poor, very rude and condescending. Really poor. I cannot understand why they close for lunch when they have so many staff on duty, why do they not take staggered lunches. They do not seem to understand that they are in a service industry. So we went and spent our money elsewhere in a Port House that was open and friendly, like they all seem to be.

We greatly enjoyed a five wine tasting here. We were served a dry red, a dry white, a white port, a red port and a tawny port. The servings were generous and there was enough for us to share one tasting. At 25 euro per tasting, it is a little pricey. Crackers, water and a few chocolates come with the wine.
Thank goodness they do not subject you to a tour and lots of gab. You pay for and get a tasting with as much explanation of the wines as you want. Once you are served, they leave you alone to enjoy in peace.
We were very impressed with the Kopke tawny port. Delicious and complex and we generally do not care for sweet wines. This is one we will add to our liquor cabinet.

We loved our visit here. You enter through the shop and have chance to look at the tasting menu before heading upstairs to enjoy. We didn't need to book in advance, but unsure if you might have to on a busier day. We opted for 3 ports and 2 wines, which were paired with crackers and chocolates. Everything was delicious and the host gave us just the right amount of information. She understood we had already done a port tasting so didn't go into too much detail about the different styles, which we really liked. We also had an excellent view of the river too, which is a great bonus!

This is not your typical port-tasting experience! There's no tour, and the venue isn't very large. I'm not sure if reservations are available, but I arrived just after lunch on a weekday and had no problem getting seated right away. In addition to some delicious tastings of ports that serve as a good introduction to ports in general, Casa Kopke offered a better range of more interesting tasting options than most other places in Porto. I opted for a selection of vintages that I wouldn't be able to find at home, and the tasting was prepared efficiently. I was given some time to myself to enjoy the selection, then after a little while one of the staff stopped by my table to discuss what I had tasted, and ports in general.
The location is central, not far from the bridge and right on the water. This is a great option if you're new to ports and want to duck in someplace classy to try some without taking the time for a tour in a group, but the real strength is in the range of options available for tasting and purchase.

A very small but the oldest port house. Excellent ports, especially the white one. They gave us chocolate to pair with the port which was perfect and not too sweet. A good stop for a tasting, or glass, and to just chill from the tourist mobs everywhere else.

We did not make reservations and I'm not sure if that is possible. When we first checked they didn't have room. We checked back later and were seated on the first floor.
They have a variety of tasting choices. You select what you want to begin and then are seated. You pay as you leave.
They do have bathrooms available.
We loved our choice and enjoyed the tasting we selected. We got some extravagant things we would never buy but this was our chance to taste them.
The staff was helpful and well trained.
Yes, give it a try.

Hello! do you know how to make a reservation to visit the vineyard? Thank you!
Valmai K
Perth, Australia
Hello from Peter and Valmai Kopke in Western Australia!
We are thinking of visiting Portugal in the next year or two and we would, of course, like to visit the Casa Kopke vineyard. Would you please let us know exactly where you are and also make suggestions as to where / places / towns / areas we should stay during our visit? We have been thinking of doing a river cruise and have received a brochure but we want to make sure that we can visit Casa Kopke!
Our grandson has just made a most beautifully crafted timber box at school for ornamental presentation of his father's bottle of Kopke port!
My husband's grandfather was Frederick Herman Kopke who came out to South Australia from Hamburg in the late 1800's. He later travelled to Western Australia to drill for water and ended up buying a pastoral property (nearly 300,000 acres) 700 miles north of Perth on the coast south of Carnarvon. His son, Alan Frederick Herman Kopke bought the adjoining statio and his grandson, Peter Alan Frederick Kopke, remained there all his working life.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Also Vila de Gaia does have numerous other Port tasting rooms. Kopke is one of the first on the small strip which includes street vendors...while tasting, you are across the river with views of the city of Porto itself. As mentioned, there's a tour bus that goes all around the city and the distance is walkable as well. :)
