- missH2525Tulsa, Oklahoma208 contributionsFun to try onceI guess it is kind of expensive for such a short ride, but I think it was worth it to ride it once. There wasn't a line or wait at all, so that was nice, as well. I recommend walking across the bridge from porto, enjoying the port wines, etc. then riding this one-way back to the bridge so you don't have to walk uphill.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2023
- Blackth0rnBristol, United Kingdom1,359 contributionsGreat viewsA convenient link between the high level bridge spanning the river from Porto and the quayside in Vila Nova de Gaia, this gives great views down the river and over the town. It could perhaps be organised a little better, there was one queue to get tickets and another to get on the cable car, but both were quite short and moved quickly. Well worth doing.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 4, 2023
- CGJJ726San Francisco, California76 contributionsFabulous Porto PortugalPorto Portugal is unique and the Gaia teleférico makes it easier to get from top to button of the hills. This place is lively... plenty of shops and good restaurants Many many more things to do . One needs more than 2 days here Highly recommended Like walking the San Luis Bridge. One can walk it or ride the modern metro or ride the river boats Go to the vineyards and tasty their sweet Porto vino....I liked it a lot Taste the famous Nata pastry.... delicious But go go go You will be glad you did Highly recommendedVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 1, 2023

It's not very long, but takes you up to the top of the city and has spectacular views over Porto and the river Douro. It was very quiet, so we paid 9 euros each for a return trip and had a car to ourselves. The views were amazing and we stayed up top for about an hour, there are cafes and street sellers and you could carry on walking back across the bridge into Porto, but we decided to come down again and visit the markets and other things in the town. Worth a trip on just for the views.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 7, 2024
- hmill42894New York City, New York322 contributionsConvenient way to get to the upper deck of Luis I bridgeWorth a ride if you’re trying to go from the river up to the top of Luis I bridge. It cost 7€ a person and they will make you share the carriage with other groups if you join from the riverside area (gets a little crowded). Not a must do, but convenient for traveling.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 9, 2024
- DanielleNorth Carolina521 contributionsScenic Ariel Views of Porto and GaiaAfter a long day of flights and metro rides, the Gaia cable car was the reprieve we were looking for to get us down to the Duoro Riverfront. It is a short ride, maybe 5 minutes at 7€ per person one way and 10€ per person round trip it certainly isn't the most cost-effective way to travel but oh my is it scenic! It is the most relaxing and scenic way to get from the Lewis I Bridge down to Villa Nova de Gaia Douro River front. You will be rewarded with beautiful aerial views of Gaia and Porto. Look to your right and you will see the Porto riverfront and skyline as well as many Rabelos, boats used to transport wine/port on the riverfront. Look to your left for a yellow building to catch a glimpse of the art installment Half Rabbit, you cannot miss this iconic masterpiece. We did not have a wait, but I can appreciate that I can get busy at peak times. We were fortunate enough to get a cable car all to ourselves which made the experience all the more memorable.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 21, 2024
- Colm NCrawley, United Kingdom232 contributionsAll the fun of the cable car without lugging any skisThe cable car is a pleasant way to get to the sunset gardens from the riverside. The trip is quite short but very picturesque. There is a ferry across the river from the Porto side close to the base of the cable car. The car takes you to within a few minutes of the gardens which are a great spot to be in the hour or so before sunset.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 28, 2024

During our visit to Porto, we decided to give the Gaia Cable Car a try, and it turned out to be a convenient and time-saving option. We were pleased to find that the ticket prices were quite reasonable, with a one-way trip costing just 7 EUR (or 10 EUR for a round trip).
While the cable car ride itself was short and over quickly, lasting only a couple of minutes, it served its purpose well. The main advantage was the ease and efficiency it provided for going up and down, eliminating the need for tiring walks to reach the top of the bridge. This saved us valuable time and energy, allowing us to focus on other attractions in the area.
One bonus of the Gaia Cable Car experience was the opportunity to capture some great photos. As you ascend or descend, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River.
So while the ride may be short, it provides a quick and efficient way to navigate the city's elevated areas.

After walking across the Dom Luis bridge, this is a great way to go down to the river front. There are plenty of cable cars and so there is barely a wait for a car. The trip shows all the incredibly scenic views if the Douro River and offers great photos
For such a short trip, 6E for a one way ticket is pretty steep.

We walked down by the steps which took us along the back streets toward the lower level of bridge. Crossing the bridge to the other side we had a leisurely walk along the Duoro before having a coffee and cake. Porto is a fabulous city, so different to Lisbon but equally photogenic. We decided to take the canle car, a first for us, and I was pleased we did, although only a short ride you can take plenty of photos. A single journey cost €6 and return €9

I downloaded the ticket on the app. I went on a Sunday morning at opening time of 10.00 for a return fee of €8. Fantastic view of the Douro and both banks. Start point was south end of Ponte Bon Luis 1 which in itself you must walk across. On reaching the Gaia river bank there was some sort of motorbike meeting, there had to be 1,000 plus. Quite a sight. As stated earlier this is a must do and brilliant photo opportunities. I just took videos so cannot upload.

Okay so It's very expensive, €6 one way for a trip that barely takes 3 minutes, €9 return. Still though, the views are stupendous, they really are. You get to see Gaia, Porto and the Douro from an angle you wont get anywhere else!
When you get off at the top take your time as the views from the station are among the best in the city.
Best way to enjoy the cable car in my opinion is walk along the Gaia waterfront, take the cablecar to the top. Not sure I'd bother with a return ticket, you are better off walking across the Dom Luiz Bridge from the upper station.

Visiting the Vila Nova de Gaia wineries is a must for any Porto visitor. Once down by the Douro river, you'll need a serious climb to reach the upper level of Dom Luis bridge to cross it back.
Therefore, to spare your feet and at the same time enjoy the views of Porto across the river, do take the Teleferico which takes you to the upper station within minutes for few Euros.
Once up, there's another great view, elevated, of this great city.

The cable car is a lovely, if brief, way to see the city. We got it from the top of the bridge down to the river side near the wine cellars then walked back to the lower tier of the bridge via the churro and granolita stall! Superb views obviously, and a fun trip. It’s currently 6 euro one way and 9 return. Children are only children if under 12. They take a photo when you get on and you can purchase for 10E at the other end.

The cable railway is a great and fast way to get up the hill. It is a bit overpriced as you pay 9€ for two ways. It is recommended to take a one way ticket and cross the bridge afterwards right to Porto city center.

Are you best to book the cable car or just go?
Written September 7, 2023
Depends on the time of year I guess - we walked up and got the next one. But it was March.
Written September 8, 2023
Hi Marphenp
Further to the previous response, the walk upto the top is a little draining so to my mind the best way is to start at the river and then walk across the bridge.
kind regards, john

Where does the ride drop you off around?

Hello, can you leave the cable car on a round-trip ticket? We'd like to ride down, walk around Gaia, and then ride back up later. Thanks!
Written July 12, 2022
You don't need to do a round trip. We didn't - we only took it one way and walked back.

Are there public toilets near the cable cars either at the top or bottom?
Written October 30, 2019
There were toilets at the top. We used them.

how crowded is it usually? Is there a long line? or do we just walk up and get in? I am thinking of doing the gondola ride from the bridge down to the riverfront.
Written August 3, 2019
We were there in June and we walked in straight into a gondola on our own.
I suspect that August may be a bit more crowded, though/
