An Excellent Return Visit Just about 14 months ago, we first visited the Port House of Taylor-Fladgate & Yeatman. As this was one of our favorite Port Houses, that was a dream come true. In November, we were back, and again staying just up the hill, at The Yeatman. On this visit, we had little time, as our holiday had been cut short by added work meetings in the USA for my wife. With little free time, we decided to return to Taylor-Fladgate & Yeatman. We took the “tour,” though sort of breezed through it a bit. Little had changed from the previous visit, but we had two goals: do the excellent Port tasting at the end - actually a couple, including the one as part of the tour - and then to have lunch at the Barao Fladgate, the Port House’s restaurant. The tour was still well-worth the time, as we had missed a few things, on our previous visit, and I can also always learn something about the history of Port wine. Last time we toured many Port Houses, and while all were great (each unique), the self-guided tour of Taylor-Fladgate & Yeatman was our favorite, but maybe that was due to knowing the Port wines, that were waiting for us at the end. After the tour, we retired to the courtyard, outside of the tasting room, and did our included tasting - great, but just an introduction to their Ports, plus two other “reserve” tastings of the Tawnies and then the Vintage Ports. The only regret is that they did not offer any way to taste their ‘55 Vintage Port - the one “major vintage” that I have never had the pleasure of tasting - maybe some day? An excellent way to spend a few hours on the history of the House of Taylor-Fladgate & Yeatman, plus the storied production of Port wines in general - and with great tasting options at the end.

We really enjoyed the self guided tour through the caves, allowing us to set our own pace. You learn about the history of port and the production process, and finish with a tasting in a lovely room looking out to the gardens, complete with peacocks!

Way over expectations and well worth the 15€ it costed. You will learn not only about the brand Taylor’s but also generally about Port Wine making, grape growing and the history of port wine in Portugal and UK. A good tasting at the end and you can easily buy an extra glass of any of the many different varieties if you like. You can buy the wine to take home as well but as we described that we’re still backpacking for a while more, the waiter recommended to instead buy their wines at the tax-free at the airport.

We had a great experience at Taylor's. The cellar is very impressive. The audio guide was very informative, at times perhaps a bit lengthy, but we definitely learned a lot. It took us approximately 1.5 hours to get through the exhibition. We were rewarded with two very fine port wines in a serene seating area, surrounded by plants and peacocks.
