About
Taylor’s, accepted by most wine authorities to be the greatest of all port shippers, invites you to a pleasant and informative tour of its famous lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia. During the tour the visitor will be given the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of Port wine, as well as that of the House of Taylor Fladgate making it one of the oldest Port companies. What wines will I taste? Two of Taylor’s iconic Port wines to taste: Chip Dry – Extra Dry White and Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), invented by Taylor’s in the 1930’s and 1970’s respectively, and a can of Chip Dry & Tonic - the delicious new Port and Tonic ready to drink.

    Beautiful
We were just walking the streets when we came across Taylors, we went in to get a drink, we weren't particularly looking to do a tour so we headed straight to the tasting room. The sun was shining so we went straight through and took a seat in the beautiful garden. It was a quintessentially English garden with tables where you could just sit and enjoy a glass of Port in the sun. There were peacocks walking round which made for great entertainment when they opened their feathers. A wonderfully peaceful and tranquil couple of hours, I would definitely recommend.

    Total Professional and Interesting Experience!
We took the Audio and Wine Tasting Tour of Taylors Fladgate. The tour took about 1 hour 15mins and then the tasting was after that. The tour is a combination of audio, videos and exhibitions. I have done many wine tours but this was by far the most professionally done and most interesting to learn about Port and the history of making of it in the Douro Valley.

    Taylor’s Port House tour
Very interesting and informative tour. You are given an audio device to listen to the guide which allows you wander through at your own pace. We enjoyed the sample ports at the end of the tour in the nice garden area with a few Peacocks thrown in for good measure. Cost of the tour was €20. If you like Port it’s well worth the visit even if it’s a little hike up the hill.

Taylor's lived up to some very high expectations
Taylor's was kind of a bucket list place for us to visit, as we are huge Taylor's fans (both the vintages and tawnies). We had a privately guided tour and then the "connoisseur" tasting. The Taylor's grounds are lovely and have a great view from the top of the hill. We began with a visit by Bob, a rooster that loves to be petted. The tour took us through the caves and through the production process, and the guide was pretty well informed. The ports we got to taste included their chip dry white (that and tonic is a great summer drink), a couple of vintages, and various tawnies up to 50 years old. There was some great stuff in those bottles. We really enjoyed our time there. I would definitely go back for different of their tastings to get even a greater breadth of their wines.

    Grahams or Taylor’s for us
We did not do the tour but headed straight for the garden tasting area. The setting was beautiful and the waiter most polite and professional. My wife had a Taylor’s Chip Tonic which came with Olives for €6; it was very good value. I had a 2016 vintage. I initially thought that €17 a glass was overpriced, but as the weekend progressed I realised how good that port was. Definitely worth the experience. In retrospect I wish I had done the tour. We also visited Grahams; which had a lovely view from the terrace. That apparently is a slightly better tour….. but a longer walk to get there!

Beautiful old winery with a rich heritage and all the modern trimmings
From the moment you walk in their Port museum and caves you appreciate their rich heritage and quality. The tour can take 45 to 90 minutes depending on how you power through. For 20€ pp they could include a third or fourth glass of port to taste but I must admit it was worth the price of admission. Especially the barrel room and the garden for tasting afterwards. I was never a fan of port and likely won’t be for long given their high sugar content but at least for today, they made a fan out of me. I even ordered a fourth glass of LBV back at the hotel bar.

    A great experience
My partner is hugely interested in wine and port and has long been a fan of the Taylors brand. Admission costs €20 and it is a self guided tour that takes you through the port making process and includes 2 ports to sample at the end. The tour was educational and enjoyable and the staff member in the sampling room was a sweetheart, patiently explaining everything to us. Highly recommended. Taking off one star though because of the hill.

    Amazing 50 yr. old port
Skip the tour (Taylor's is a self-guided audio tour, Graham's in-person tour is outstanding!) and go straight for the tasting - splurge on the 40 and 50yr. old tasting, especially if you are already familiar with Taylor. My husband and I shared the tasting. The 40 yr. old was great but the 50 yr. old was AMAZING! So much depth and complexity. Their take on Pasteis de Nata has chocolate in it and it was yummy with the port. Staff was professional and knowledgeable.

    Lovely afternoon
We stumbled across here on a whim after wandering around looking for some sort of port tasting experience (with no plan in mind!). Recognised the Taylors name so went for it. 20euro for an audio tour where you wandered the storage casks with a handheld device that described what you were seeing in many different languages. Afterwards sat in a pretty courtyard where a waiter brought out two ports for us to try along with a can of port and tonic each to take home. Interesting and enjoyable, glad we picked here.

    Great visit
A very friendly-user visit for the discovery of port. We did Pinhao the day before and decided to visit Gaia because the grapes harvested in Douro were sent to the main port houses in Gaia. Very nice garden patio for the tasting. Great service by Nathalia at the gift shop.

The tour here was very informative, I took the 11am tour as it lasts for an hour, we had some tastings afterwards and you can buy some delicious port wine and at 12 go to their michelin star restaurant where the view, service and food cannot be surpased, one of my favourite days in Porto. Don't forget to see the Peacock, very beautiful to sit in the gardens outside and enjoy the sun, the magnificent views across the Douro River and this beautiful bird. Heaven. There's a free car park nearby which is listed on Park 4 Night app and can be and is used for campers!

First of all: Clients can't be let waiting for far more than fifteen minutes to simply get bread and olive oil with vinegar on the table. In all, we arrived at the restaurant at around 1.30pm and finished 4 o'clock was long gone! And we had no aperitifs ordered.
Second: Such a "distinct" restaurant can not have young staff serving where one noticed they must have come out of hotel school not very long ago! One gets far better service on dozens of top restaurants here in the bigger Porto area and especially far quicker and cheaper!
Third: One of the fish dishes was not properly cooked, it still showed a bit of blood on the inside, when cutting with the knife!
Fourth: The "cerise sur le gâteau" (the "cherry on the top of the cake") was when one of us ordered a Tawny port and some minutes later a young woman came, a bit shy, saying: "Sorry, just to be sure... did you ask a tonic water or a gin tonic?" I( exploded, really! I yelled at her: "In this restaurant full of "stars and "niveau chic" you don't know what a Tawny is and mix the word with tonic???"
Never ever again!
Btw, do you know now how to improve your service??

I was very disappointed with our visit - I have been meaning to go there for ages but never got the chance when I’ve been in Portugal previously.

The setting is beautiful - the garden is pleasant & the rooster & peacock add an element of interest. Unfortunately, the service was terrible.

We were ignored from arrival.
We just looked around the shop as the waiters weren’t paying us attention. When we approached the counter to find out the process for a tasting, we were ignored. Waiters kept walking around us and not checking if we needed help.
We settled down outside & people that arrived after us were served first. They had their drinks before we got service.

When served, we were just asked in Portuguese what we wanted from the menu. It was as if they didn’t want our money - so we didn’t waste it there.

We weren’t asked if we understood & nothing was explained to us & nothing was recommended. We heard the waiter explaining things at other tables in English.

We think they thought we were local because we were speaking Portuguese. I really hope that’s not how the locals are treated.

Another thing I didn’t appreciate was the request for a 10% tip if we liked the service. We obviously didn’t tip anything. Portugal isn’t really a place you tip huge amounts if at all… and asking for a 10% tip is a bit cheeky in my opinion.

We won’t be returning. 😞

We toured this port house, opting for the self-guided tour and the white port and 2014 LBV port tasting. We found the talk to be excessively detailed, as the whole tour took close to 2 hours. The ports were entry-level, but one could opt to taste tawnies and vintage ports as well, which we did. Though the tastings weren’t cheap, we found this to be a great way to introduce one to port and its history. It’s quite a walk up the hill, though, so one might want to take a taxi.

Dear Gailyn63, Thank you in advance for your visit and for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you had a pleasant experience in our cellars. In fact, the audio-guide has complete information about the history and all the process of production, but the positive point is that it allows to move forward whenever the visitor wants. The tasting included in the price of the tour was chosen to allow our guests to discover two interesting, premium quality Ports of contrasting styles. The Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage is one of our most highly regarded Ports and shares the heritage of the classic Taylor Vintage Ports in a more approachable style. Chip Dry was the first dry white Port, created by Taylor’s 85 years ago and still a firm favourite. It's good to know that you had the opportunity to taste other styles during your visit. Even with the hard climb we hope to see you again at Taylor's. Best regards, Taylor's Port

We took this tour (15 euros) which included a map, audio tour , brief guidebook to Taylor’s and 2 tastings. I liked that we could go at our own pace. The cellars were authentic and the explainations/displays were thorough. The tasting was good. One thing that I particularly liked here was that you could add a few little things to enjoy with your tasting. We had a Portuguese cheese plate (12) and marcona almonds (2) and 2 custard cups (1 each). The garden was lovely to enjoy and the peacocks and rooster roaming around was unusual and nice.

The bathrooms are easy to find and very clean. I also noticed that they serve a set menu lunch (30- so it must include port or wine tastings). It was a lovely setting and I would go back.

Taylor is affiliated with The Yeatman and if you get a chance to go to their Dicks wine bar it is worth it for the view alone.

Dear pollym2014, Thank you in advance for your visit and for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you had a pleasant experience in our cellars and that you enjoyed the ambiance. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. In fact, for lunch we have the set menu option that includes a starter, main course, dessert and one glass of wine but you still can choose "à la carte". So we hope that you can come next time and have a delicious meal at Restaurante Barão Fladgate. We look forward to see you again. All the best, Taylor’s Port

The tasting we found very impersonal and not very helpful. We found it like we had a privilege of tasting here, and we struggled to get service; this was in the low season! They are not very costumer centered at all.
The only redeeming factor was that the meal and service at the restaurant was very good. However, I think I would think twice about buying a Taylors Port again after such an experience.

My daughter & I took a steep climb up to Taylor's only to be greeted by 2 snooty, frosty women. As a former Receptionist I think they completely by-passed on the importance of being the Face of a Place!!! Abrupt on questioning "where from?" & muttering between themselves after we purchased our tickets (admittedly I was wearing my Mickey Mouse Hat) & to be honest if I'd not been stopped by my daughter I think I would have actually said something because we were made to feel anything but welcome! However, that aside one of the best, most informative & interesting places you could visit. The aroma from the Caves and I suppose because we both love British History & it's connection with Portugal we spent a good few enjoyable hours walking around. It would be nice if there was more interaction as in the Heineken place in Amsterdam..but all in all absolutely worth a visit (€15pp). Oh yes & that includes a few tasters in a lovely bar area with s garden so imagine this must be lovely to take a break in the warmer seasons as there are nice views. There is a restaurant on site which looked fab but as we were on on a 2 1/2 day break we were short of time. Go see for yourselves but if you are any way unable to walk far or are disabled then get a taxi. We walked from where the restaurants are on the riverside so just a heads up on that.

aylor’s history dates back to 1692. They are considered one of the top producers of Port Wine. Visitors take a detailed 60-minute audio tour while walking through their massive cellar and rooms displaying their history and processing.
The tour ends with a tasting of two Ports with an option to purchase additional exceptional wine at a reasonable price.

While there, I recommend lunch at their Barao Fladgate Restaurant for the exquisite food and a perfect view of Porto.

For such a well know quinta, they could do a lot more to vastly improve a visitors experience.

We did a tasting only as we love port wine. We found the quinta to be too stuffy, snobby, impersonal & commercial for us. It was not a warm & friendly atmosphere.

The tasting room was not welcoming & the service left a lot to be desired. We tried the more expensive tawny ports & some appetizers.

We were so disappointed with our experience I am not sure will not drink Taylor anymore. We like went to Graham & liked that so much better.

We took a 3E Uber ride from the Ponte de Dom Luis bridge - well worth the 3E to avoid walking up/down the steep hills.

Carry bottled water with you as none of the quintas offered us water.

We easily walked here from Taylor to Croft as it was downhill.

We had time for one port cellar so went with one of the tourist or most obvious ones. Very informative 90 mins with 3 port tastings amongst the peacocks at the end in the garden, worth 15 euros each and time well spent. If we came again I believe the smaller ones can give a more intimate experience but for a starting point of port education it ticked the boxes and I would recommend.
