- DonnaM103 contributionsEnjoyable lunch visitStopped here for lunch on a very warm day, so sat outdoors. Great choice of food from various vendors. Beer station on the centre of the hall. We felt it was very well priced and the food we chose was excellent.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 14, 2023
- Pernille ICopenhagen, Denmark6,569 contributionsWorld food sceneThe old Beira Rio market in Vila Nova de Gaia dates back from the 2nd half of the 19th century when it was an open air market. Then it became fenced in, and in 1904 it became a covered market in the current building. It housed mainly a fish market but also fruits and vegetables and it worked in the traditional way. This is unfortunately no longer the way people do grocery shopping, and in 2017 it was revamped and now offers around 30 stalls with food and drinks from around the world. You can still find a few stalls working the old way - like the fruit vendor on 4th generation now. I got tempted by the Brazilian meat balls which were ok without being exceptional.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 22, 2023
- NCRedhead105446 contributionsNice Night in GaiaWe eventually went to Time Out in Lisbon so in comparison this food hall is smaller and not overwhelming. It was our first night in Portugal so we were both hungry and tired and just wanted simple food. We settled on a place that made wonderful sandwiches with more unusual ingredients than the sandwiches found in the US. I also had my first port (Calem) here and not sure if it was because it was my first, it became my favorite…also note that I didn’t realize port should be served cold…so much better than the way I had been drinking it at home. If you are staying in Porto, come down to the water and walk to Gaia especially in the evening. Walk along the water, pop in a shop and then end here for dinner or a snack. This was a nice way to start our trip.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 7, 2023
- ttashySt Kilda, Australia139 contributionsGreat value and good quality productsGreat local market with lots of different food options. Everything was very reasonably priced too. Definitely go for the fresh oysters and cooked prawns. Highly recommend this market when in Porto!Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten April 9, 2024
- paulac32Manchester, United Kingdom358 contributionsLoved this market but please sort out the toilets!Great market with a huge range of food and drink options at quite reasonable prices. There is a terrace at the back which is a real suntrap if the weather is good. My one issue is the toilets - there were no paper towels or hand driers in the toilets. Surely this is massively unhygienic considering the staff use them too? For a place that is used by so very many people this needs to be addressed.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024

It is a nice little market where you can locally produced food. Some stalls also sell souvenirs. You can also enjoy a glass or more of wine and taste some local food inside, where there is a relaxed atmosphere.

Mercado Beira-Rio: Lively but Crowded with Seating and Cleanliness Issues
Mercado Beira-Rio is a vibrant market, but our experience had its ups and downs. While we enjoyed the excitement of exploring, the overwhelming number of people made it challenging to move around comfortably. The limited seating available was disappointing, and the cleanliness of the seating areas left much to be desired. Despite the unique food offerings at each stall, most of the prices were comparable to restaurants, which didn't quite align with the market setting. Overall, Mercado Beira-Rio offers a lively atmosphere, but the seating and cleanliness issues detracted from the experience.

Went here for dinner on my third night in Porto with family. Mercado Beira Rio is a relatively small market with around 10 stalls, a few of which were closed when I went. There are two big screens showing sport channels and many tables for you to eat at.
We ordered from several stalls, ranging from seafood (clams and praws) to suckling pig buns which were very good.
The reason for this review being 4 star and not 5 is that the market can be a bit dirty in places and it isn’t very lively. If you compare Mercado Beira Rio to other markets in Portugal such as the Timeout Market in Lisbon, it is far smaller and less lively hence the 4 star rating.

Nice market in Vila Nova de Gaia. I can only recommend to stop by at O Forno do Leitao Do Ze for a sandwich with piglet meat, very tasty. Nice bakeries to try pastel de nata. Worth going for a quick lunch!

Absolutely fantastic fresh food court, ambience is great and the food is better than some restaurants charging double the price!
Popular with locals, called in initially at the weekend on 26th Jan when there were craft stalls in the entranceway and outside by the river.
Walked round and all tables were taken otherwise we’d have stopped for lunch or even the afternoon! Returned on 27th when it was much quieter and sampled some extremely tasty and fresh tapas and a glass of red wine. Delicious! So much so we ordered additional tapas.
This is the no.1 place to visit and enjoy some lovely food when in Porto. Other European cities offer similar food courts but Porto for me was the best.

Based on some reviews I had read, I was expecting good food at low prices and catering to mostly locals. The place has now been discovered by international tourists, and gets very crowded. The food was just OK, and the prices are now similar to the Porto side (3.50E for a small donut!). Some vendors still only take cash, and at least two vendors had problems running my various credit cards so I finally just paid cash. Bathrooms certainly need attention.

We visited this food market on a Sunday lunchtime , when a few stalls were closed. Despite this we managed to get a good variety of food & some very affordable Pastel De Nata on top of that - the fruit & veg market was also a bonus. However note that outside the market on a Sunday it gets very busy with motorbikes & their riders - from speaking to a stall holder she says this is tradition each week for motorbikes to descend on the market and river front !

We were visiting on a busy Saturday and the area was packed with tourists. We stopped into this beautiful little market for lunch and we were so glad we did. It was also very busy, but there was plenty of seating and lots of great food choices. We had a freshly made, delicious pizza that was really reasonably priced. Highly recommended for a quick meal and a browse if you're in the area.
