Highlight of our Douro Valley experience

A spectacular river cruise. Two hours of beauty, culture, history and even a glass of port to authenticate the experience. Our guide was kind, fun, knowledgeable and passionate and did all she could to make our adventure special, personalized, and fun. I communicated with Paulo in advance to make our booking and he was amazing to deal with—flexible, quick to respond, accommodating—and he even made some great recommendations to enhance our stay in the area, beyond the river cruise. This was DEFINITELY the highlight of my time in the Douro Valley. Worth every penny and memorable beyond words.

Very Good But Not Everything Went to Plan!!!

Interesting experience!!! Tried in 2021 to book online. Did not work. Emailed and booked as they said online not yet available for 2022 but would put us down for 3 hours for 2 people on their yacht. Specifically selected the yacht as I had sailed on them to France before. Arrived in May at their mooring at allotted time. Had to call them as no one there. First thing we were told was we could only have 2 hours as someone had booked on line for our last hour very recently and their system did not reject it. So we were the disadvantaged ones!!!! Offered free bottle of wine. Then the engine on the yacht (which had been playing up!!) would not start so we were moved to their small motor launch. Cruise up and down the Douro with their employee Barbara was very good. On return the credit card machine to pay took ages to work. Had to remind the owner about the free bottle of wine!! In summary we selected them as we felt it would be a better experience than on a "volume" cruise boat, however whilst the cruise was lovely, it did come with the somewhat chaotic management!!

Unexpectedly Awesome

Ok I have to admit we were a little skeptical when we were boarding the boat. The weather was raining on and off and it felt a little "extra" to book the boat. But as soon as we got out on the water, we were all smiles. It was one of the best things we booked in the Douro Valley and we were so pleased with our 2 hour sailing tour. It was just my husband and I, and the service we got from the skipper was truly wonderful. Can't recommend this tour enough.

Simply magical

Forget taking packed tourist boats with recorded information about the sights. Take this trip and enjoy the silence instead. We had a wonderful time aboard Unbelievable. The boat is beautiful and the scenery exceptional. We chose the sunset option and the colours of the vines were magical as the sun was setting. Breath-taking.

Most Relaxing and informational excursion since coming to Europe

What a phenomenal afternoon we had with Anima Durius River Cruises. We booked a private tour, my wife and I for three hours. This included wine (from the captains award winning winery), snacks and an amazing captain (Paulo) to provide us information, stories, and entertainment. You get to cruise up or down the Douro at a wonderful leisurely rate. Take in the countryside, the history (provided by the captain), easily take photos and enjoy the local wine. Paulo's love for the area, the agriculture, and his family are just part of the experiences he shares. I have not had a more relaxing and informational outing since arriving in Europe almost 3 years ago. You can enjoy these cruises privately like we did or with friends and family. They have three different boats to choose from and provide professional, polite and experienced personnel to entertain you. We hope to get back soon for another trip and even considering taking one of his private trips from Pinhao to the border of Spain.

One of the best days ever

When we booked the tour, we were expecting an average day out discovering Portuguese wines. What we experienced was a lot more. Paulo knows the area like the back of his hand, and it was an enormous privilege to not only visit his vineyard and winery, but also meet his family, especially his mother and father, the founders of Quinta Poços. Our every need was catered for, from transport to a pit stop for a quick espresso! We enjoyed an delicious lunch, washed down with a selection of his excellent wines, and talked for hours. The day was finished off with an unforgettable cruise down the Douro river, enjoying some white port, music and incredible views as the sun went down over the valley. We didn’t want it to end, and would like to take this opportunity to thank Paulo for making it a day that we will always remember.

If you’re planning to visit the Douro valley, you need to book this tour!

Highlight of our trip

This boat trip was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. It was just my husband and I, and I'm definitely glad we went for the private tour. The Douro River Valley is enchanting, and how better to see it than from the water! We did 1 hour on the boat named "Unbelievable." Our captain was so very sweet and kind and spoke excellent English (along with many other languages!). He provided us with some incredible history of the area, and of PT in general, as well as info on flora and fauna, etc. He was so well-versed in everything we asked! So impressive. We went in March, and the weather was fast changing and wild. Over the course of the hour it was sunny and warm, chilly and raining, cloudy and windy, and back to sunny. We were so nervous that we were going to have to cancel due to weather, but I would say unless it's lightening, don't cancel. The captain has blankets if you are cold, and you can go under in the cabin where it is heated but you can still see everything around you perfectly through the windows. We found the wild weather to enhance our experience. Happy travels!

Beautiful & Relaxing Boat Tour

My husband and I splurged on this while visiting Pinhao on our honeymoon and were SO happy we did. We took a beautiful trip down the Douro with Barbara all by ourselves and had a lovely time. Barbara had little snacks and a bottle of champagne for us which was sweet. Barbara is from the valley and knew so much history about the places and land we passed by - I was so excited to hear about it all. On the way back, the sun came out and Barbara offered to take some photos for us. I think she lets you make what you want of it - if you want to be chatty, she has so much great knowledge, and if you don't feel like talking much and want to just take in the surroundings, she can do that too :)

If you are considering a sunset boat tour at all, GO for it!

Starlets on the riviera

Arriving in Pinhão early in the morning we had the privilege of being the first boat to set off and have the Douro valley to ourselves. My friend and I had a wonderful little wooden boat, just for the 2 of us, that was full of charm and made us feel like starlets on the riviera.

Our guide Barbara was great and giving us not just good explanations but also being fun and full of energy. We initially took the 1h trip but when the time had come to turn back around we extended it for an extra hour allowing us to go deeper in the valley, something I truly recommend.

Truly memorable!

Since our visit to Douro in late September, we have often remembered and recounted our time there with great fondness. It was most definitely the highlight of our two weeks in Portugal. While we were most looking forward to Paulo's sailboat tour, it became somewhat anticlimactic but still very enjoyable, after the nearly four hours we spent at his lovely family's wine estate. After meeting his parents and sister and touring the winery, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch prepared by a delightful staff member who, because it was a late harvest Sunday, went above and beyond her normal duties to ensure we felt welcomed and could experience an authentic Portuguese meal. Greatly appreciated. But the absolute best part was just being able to while away those hours with our charming host, Paulo (and several bottles of lovely wine)...talking about everything...from travel to family to politics to wine to LIFE! By the time we left to head back to Paulo's boat for a couple of hours on the river, we felt as if we'd just spent a very special afternoon with a new friend. Muito obrigado, Paulo! We hope to see you again one day.
