- Richard EKenley, United Kingdom42 contributionsA great way of seeing a stunning landscapeThe Douro valley is simply stunning, with steep terraced vineyards on both sides. We took the train from Porto Sao Bento to Pinhao (a great place to walk around, with multiple quintas to visit). The first hour out of Porto isn’t very interesting, but the second hour makes it worthwhile. Try to get on the train T Sao Bento (where it starts - it can get very full) and sit on the right hand side going out - you’ll have the best view.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 31, 2023
- Hawaiian CanuckVancouver, Canada2,088 contributionsStunning…best way to see it is by cruise. As a landscape architect, I was blown away by how beautiful and majestic this valley is. We did a two hour cruise and got a chance to experience the changing vistas as we passed many vineyards and small towns. Do the longer cruise as it’s worth the time invested. Also make sure to visit a winery for a meal.Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 4, 2024

One of the most beautiful places I have been. The wineries on the side of the mountains with the Douro valley flowing through was beautiful we stayed at a winery hotel deep into The Valley with the river on bottom. You could walk down through the fields of grapes to the river. The winery hotel was the vinhetello a 500 year old winery partially converted with an on sight restaurant. Amazing with an Infiniti pool overlooking the river

We took the train from Porto to Pinhao and stayed in Pinhao for two nights and then returned on the older tourist train to Porto. The views from the train are amazing especially on the return as the windows slide down and you get the full experience off the scenery . I think it cost about 15 euro one way and was so well worth every penny to follow the beautiful entrancing Duro river......

I decided at the last minute to get on a tour in the Douro Valley, could not find a place for guided tour so I decided to take a train and hike alone. I took a train from Porto to Pinaho. 20 euros for round trip. The road, as soon as you leave the city, is beautiful. A large part of the road travels right on the banks of the river. The train was comfortable, on time, almost empty. A drive of about two and a half hours. I reached pinaho and walked around town on foot. The town is relatively deserted, probably not in season, but very pleasant and the view is lovely. You can leave the town for a cruise on the river, 10 euros for an hour cruise, there is also a cruise of 20 euros, if I am not mistaken for two hours. I arrived too late for the cruise so I made do with walking. Whoever wants, around the town there are wineries with the possibility of touring and tasting. I did not check costs. Nice lunch at 16 euros and I went back to Porto. In a very nice shortcut to spend a day on an independent trip. recommended.

I think Douro valley is overrated. The landscape is v ordinary. They all looks the same. The tiny narrow steep roads snaking All the little villages are awkful . Pinhao is a tourist trap. The price of everything in Pinhao is inflated to double the price of Porto. If you expect it to be similar to New Zealand, you will be greatly disappointed.

We went on a guided tour of the Duoro Valley from Amarante. Fantastic trip along the banks of the Duoro and then lunch on a boat where we were taken along the Duoro with great explanations of the area and how the grapes are grown. Great area to visit. Fantastic scenery and quintas to visit

Sadly, our tour company (Experience Portugal) set up our driver, winery tour and evening in the Douro Valley and I did not write down the company that picked us up. Our driver was Maria who arrived at our hotel right on time and took us first for a nice boat ride in Pinaho. We drove along the river and got to watch a river cruise boat transition through a lock. Our boat ride was very nice on the calm river seeing so many wineries along the hillsides. Then we visited the Quinta de Marrocos Winery for a great adventure seeing how this old 5 generation family grows, picks and processes the grapes from vines ranging up to 100 years old. Fascinating to walk amongst the huge (20,000 liter) wooden casks. Finally culminating in what can only be described as an amazing lunch with a huge sampling of various wines and ports. I think the Marrocos visit was one of my favorite stops in all of Portugal and I am not a wine drinker normally preferring beer, but this was just amazing, and everything tasted so good. We bought both a 40-year-old port and a LVB (late vintage port). Try not to miss this adventure in the Douro Valley

The douro Valley is simply gorgeous with breathtaking views all along. It gets very hot in summer so best to go in May or in the fall. A two-night stay is ideal. We had some great meals at the quintas, and enjoyed wonderful wines. Fabulous.

Hi,
We are 4 adults arriving July 2023, first time visitors, self-drive. Looking to explore vineyards and the coast. Where should we spend most of our time? We have 4 full days and want to see Porto and Pinhao?
Thanks!
Written March 8, 2023
4 days is short. You may want to spend 2 nights in Porto and then find a vineyard that is not too far up the Duro river so you can enjoy 2 days walking around between the grapes.

We are planning a one or two-day trip from Porto to the Duoro Valley in March 2023. Is it possible to take a boat one way from Porto to Pinhao or anywhere worth visiting, stay overnight and take the train back the next afternoon? I can see some tours that go by boat but can't find anyone mentioning one-way boat trips.

Hi. Sorry for the delay in answering but I have been away from this site for a long time. You can get one way. My wife and I did the trip from Porto and got the train back the same day. We used Cruzeiros Douro. They do day trips both ways and return by bus. They give a small discount if you arrange your own return. You do need to check their schedule as they go one way one day and then the other the following. They go through the deepest locks on the river which is what we were after.
One thing to look for is there is an old fashioned steam train which travels back to Poto but it runs at limited time and dates. The rest of the time it’s just a normal commuter type train. The views are great as it runs next to the Douro but does break away the closer it gets to Porto. The end of the line is Porto Sao Bento railway station which deserves a visit to see its fantastic tiles.
Have a great trip

We are planning to stay near Pinhao for a few nights. Can we get a river cruise from this area to view the valley? We don't want to depart from Porto.

Hi there, you can get a cruise from there, sorry it's taken so long to answer :))

Please tell me:
If I go in early April, will there be beautiful bright greens there as in the photo at this time? Will there be no gray bald trees and bushes after winter?

Hi. My husband and I are planning 8 days in Porto and 7 days Douro river cruise in Late March. Has anyone been there in March/April? Looking for recommendations on areas of interest, places to stay, vegetarian restaurants in Porto as we will be following the river cruise itinerary while aboard.
Also, continuing on to central Portugal after river cruise, so looking for suggestions for interesting things to do by car in central/coastal Portugal.

You are in for a great trip. I have never been to Porto in Spring, only Algarve. Porto is wonderful. After taking the Hop on Hop off bus tour to get to know all the main "attractions" and discovering the nice things of Porto I would suggest at least one day trip to Guimares. Taking the train there is not expensive and quite easy to do. You will see the Douro Valley by boat - not sure how many times you stop and get off to visit a wineries - if it is not many you might want to take a day trip from Porto to Pinhao. That can be by train or an organized trip with a mini van - 8 to 10 persons. Although I am not a vegetarian I did eat at a great vegetarian restaurant, only I for get the name now. Most restaurants do have vegetarian choices. I Uber often but in Portugal it was not nesc. as Taxis are very affordable. Our next trip we will do day trips from Porto to Braga and Coimbra, both are easily reached by train.
Have fun.

Any recommendations of a baby friendly tour?
Written January 21, 2020
Oporto e Duoro can accommodate a baby, they give an excellent tour.

We are spending 3 days in Porto. Would love to visit the Douro valley. Can anyone recommend a 3 to 4 hour trip.
Written November 3, 2019
I agree with the other suggestions. The Duoro valley is definitely worth a full day. We took the train out of Porto to Pinhao. Had lunch in Pinhao then took a boat tour. Did wine tasting at two vineyards and then took the last train back to Porto. It was a great day.

Hi. My sister and I want to tour the Douro Valley, visiting wineries etc. i see you did a day boat tour but got off it at one point to stay in accommodation. I would be interested in more details if you would not mind sharing.
Thank you
Linda

Hello, there. Hope you like the visit at least as much as we did. There are several options regarding boat tours. We took the shortest one, only a few hours tour, and visited the rest by car. However, we did so because there were no vacancies to the longer one day tours. There are some options of several day cruises that go all the way to Spain too, but that starts to become a little pricey. My girlfriend has much more details. If you want, I can ask her.

Is it obvious where to stop for wine tastings in the Douro Valley? What are some recommended tasting stops?? Thanks.
Written September 9, 2019
Hi, you will find wineries all over the place and there are clear signs. Most of them offer tasting, a few only by appointment. Most of them are good.
