If you are in Machico, then it is well worth popping into this church to see its painted ceiling, altarpiece and artefacts.

Very busy early Sunday morning but otherwise a calm but chilly oasis in a busy town. Some might say it’s a tourist spot. I say it’s just a church.

We were told this 15th century church was the first built on Madeira. It doesn’t feel so old inside but the painted ceiling is beautiful and worth seeing. The altar is not too ornate in comparison with other Portuguese churches. An interesting visit.

It’s in Machico. If you walk from the beach towards the centre of the town, you’ll find it. It sits in a large square.
