About
Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.

An excellent course, much better than Palheiro
We really enjoyed this course. It is head & shoulders better than Palheiro. Firstly the welcome in the Pro shop is excellent, then the course is superior (especially the front 9), then the condition of the course (especially the greens) is superior and it’s cheaper. Go figure! Recommended!

    Well Manicured Courses
I played the Serra & Dessertas courses . Both very nice and a good challenge with club selection & shotmaking. Pace of play was okay. I got held up on the Serra course but was playing millionaire golf on the Dessertas course. The Views. Absolutely mind blowing. Good pictures to be taken on a clear day.

    Golf at another level!
Played here every time we have holidayed in Madeira, never fails to disappoint. Played under the “Passport”, 3 rounds of golf for a special price. Mini bus pick up exactly on time, quick few on the range then 9 on Machico and 9 on Desertas. Played off yellows first but realised a bit easy so the next time off whites, different course. Pretty open as one may want when on holiday but the views are fantastic as always. For the first time this year played off the fairways without placing! I would recommend a buggy unless you’re happy for a hard walk in places, as I was. Quick pint and snack very reasonably priced (€10) then minibus home at 3pm. Millionaires golf with amazing views at very reason price. May not be your biggest golf test but you are on holiday!

The course is basically at the top of the island. The views are incredible and the course condition is impeccable. Many tee decks, Ohio white sand bunkers, and greens that run around 10-11 stimp. To play once the green fees are steep, however there is 3 and 5 round packages available that lower the cost quite a bit. It is definitely a long hard walk!! Carts are costly but may be worth the price.

This year we were here in January and yesterday we were warmly welcomed by Catarina and in great weather. We were able to play our round yesterday on red/blue (Machico/Desertas). Top condition, all green, great fairways, great greens, good bunkers, despite the heavy rain last week. Phenomenal views, you can't get enough of them even after many years! Simply wonderful. Only the driving range/balls are less than ideal and the prices for the carts are quite high. We are already looking forward to the next round.

We spent a week at Madeira, and two weeks before that they had the "Madeira Open" at the Santo da Serra. A very challenging course. Well kept, and BEAUTIFUL scenery. There is some wind (it's about 700 m above sea level), but that makes it even more challenging. Greens are SUPER, but not easy to read. some holes are exceptional, and very nice to play.
The course has been designed by Robert Trent.

Close to the airport, 27 holes, greener and somewhat flatter than the golf club in Funchal. More players too. Nice viewed from the restaurant.

If you want a relaxing round or two of golf then this 27 hole complex has to be high on the list.
To be honest I do not understand how the pro's play this - Madeira Open - as it seems too short and not very demanding. Oh well I'm not a pro but really enjoyed 5 rounds at this course. You do really need a buggy unless very fit as there are some quite steep slopes - especially at the end of each 9 hole course. There is a good variety of holes and not much water to gobble your golf balls up.
The greens were in good condition but as others have said there are a few pitch marks. So just repair two or three, curse the previous players who probably don't know what a pitch fork is (they should all be banned for life) and move on with a smile knowing you have left the course slightly more playable. OOOPs was that a bit of a rant!! Don't be put off it is a good course to play. We found the service in the Pro shop was excellent some of the other staff would be more in the acceptable category. Bar prices average (€3.50 for a large beer) food a bit pricy but good.

Top tip is to buy the yardage book - one of the best I have ever seen.
Swing well and enjoy.

The clubhouse is very welcoming and the staff are super serviceminded!
We rebooked almost all of our tee-times with no worries. They arranged pickup and return-transfer to our hotel at any time.
We had the "unlimited 7-days golf" package and played 27-36 holes a day.
It was calm with no rush and no marshals picking at you at the course. We do play quite fast but anyway, it was very relaxing and enjoyable rounds of golf.
It was the opposite of the crowded courses at Costa del Sol in Spain for example.
They have three 9-hole Courses and you get a tee-time for each 9-holes. They vary the maintenance on the course during the day so we could play 18-holes Before lunch and then play the remaining 9-holes afterwards and then carry on playing...
Quality on greens was PERFECT.
The fairways was not in the same condition due to a very dry summer and autumn. Still they were quite ok and some was good.
The layout is Beautiful and different alternatives from tee to green makes it a challenge for all levels of golfers.
The Machico and Desertas 9-holes are a bit hilly and did break out some sweat in the forehead, but the spectacular views makes it all Worth it.
The Serras 9-holes are a little bit more level but still very nice and enjoyable.
We will definitely return!

Played here twice in last week, and I like the sent up. 3 Nine hole courses and you get allocated the two you are to play that day and times for each of the courses, I think this works well, and I guess most of the time allows you to have a quick refreshment between the 2 nines.

Nice clubhouse with friendly staff, and very efficient staff in the pro shop, also has big changing rooms , showers towels etc.

The course is in good condition in my opinion with great , and fast , greens.

Big practice green , practice range and chipping area.

Weather can be varied with low clouds as I had to for part of the first day. However comparing golf here compared to in the UK in November , this is magical !

Courtesy bus from my hotel , with good drivers, as coming down hill requires good gear work.

I would thoroughly recommend this course.

Santo da Serra Golf is a 5 star golf course on the east side of Madeira. Quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal!
