We did walk number 5 from this book: http://www.sunflowerbooks.co.uk/product/walking-and-eating-in-madeira/ which starts from Ribeiro Frio, goes along the levada for about an hour (or less) and then turns off to follow another levada uphill. It's a beautiful walk with gorgeous vegetation which is at times challenging - but not too much and not for too long. It comes out at the source of the levada which makes a good picnic spot and then you go further up to come out to a beautiful view - so peaceful.

Fantastic views of the North coast from this large miradouro. Souvenir shops cater for the tour buses and, there are a couple of bars nearby for refreshments. Worth a stop.

We drove here from where we were staying in Porto da Cruz and were surprised the difference in temperature. Being quite high though it does makes sense. Besides the view there's not much here but there was a lady selling souvenirs and a fellow selling flowers and seeds.

Have been here twice. First time we were staying Santo da Serra and came down by taxi. Second time a friend drove me here for a Verada walk in the Laurisilva forest.
There is no doubting that this is one of the most spectacular views on Madeira and that justifies the journey and 5 stars on its own. However like several other places the quality of the local facilities is pretty poor.
The local restaurants are tired and the food and drink inferior.
Because of its location there is a higher chance of the view being impaired by low cloud or rain. On one occasion this added to the view with a spectacular rainbow but this place is best visited on a warm sunny day.
If you do the Levada walk from Ribeiro Frio then you get to see the view as you come off the Levada.
If you do the walk soak up the view take pictures and then get a taxi or if timed correctly a local bus down to Machico where there are far better eating and drinking places and from there there are more buses back along the coast to Funchal.

We stopped before going on a nice walk along the levadas. Good coffee but you could also have lunch there.

We were traveling through the north east of Madeira for the first time and came upon this Miradouro by accident. It was a lucky accident since this is spot provides an excellent view to the coastline

Was the end of our levada walk from Ribeiro Frio. The walk is around 11 km and the day we did it was all misty and wet giving it a fairytale feeling.Watch out coz the paths can get really slippery.Aproximatelly in the middle of the route the path was in really bad condition making some other people walk back to ribeiro frio.We continued though and made it to Portela. There you can find a restaurant right after the end of the path to get a drink or some food.

Wow, this was spectacular. You see a panoramic view of villages, mountains, and the sea. One of the best views out of a series of unbelievable views throughout the island. You can easliy get to it by car.

Found this by accident a few years ago, and now we have discovered it again. The weather luckily was very good today .. no clouds, so we had an awesome view from very high up (over 600m) down to the bay of Porto Da Cruz in the distance.

We rented a 125 cc motorbike and we did all the island tours by ourselves. It was totally worth it. The view from Portela is almost as nice as from Pico do Arieiro.
