We went on 3 levada walks and this was probably the most enjoyable because it was not as enclosed by trees as the others and it was easier to enjoy the views. Since it follows the contours of the hills it is fairly level, but you get great views up, across, and down the valley. The walk ends at the river from where the levada is fed. Other walkers were walking on the opposite side of the valley, so I am guessing you can do a round walk, although we re-traced our steps. 4 hours very enjoyably spent. Just a word of caution, whilst there are hand rails on a lot of the steep drops, there are a few unprotected edges.

The satnav in our hire car got us there but make sure you turn your car around further up the road so that you are facing downhill when you park, we got there early and the road was full when we got back. A gentle incline me ant that this was not strenuous and with rails for the sheer drops very safe, easily done in a couple of hours.

I have my favourite places on the islands, most of them levadas, and this is one of those I keep returning to. The bus from Funchal to Cruz leaves 10:00 and takes about an hour and a half, there are several options available to return to Funchal from the same village, giving you a full day of walking in your own pace. A picnic at the levada source is very tranquil but there are many places along the walk that give you better views over the surrounding landscape.

Very easy walking. Parking limited at start. Easy to follow path with hand rails where needed. Ends at riverbed with wire suspension bridge ( rickety!) and picnic bench.

Access from expressway and follow campo do fotball signs. There is parking there and a path up the hill to the levada. From here you have two walks. Right takes you to the wild. The path is narrow but easy walking. The guide books show this as a short walk less than 5 k each way. However the levada leads to lombo grande. When you reach the start of the levada. The lombo is a separate walk so not described here. Great walk. Good waterfall and we saw Madeira firecrests.

Sometimes it's important to take the time to look back and see where you've been.
We combined this walk with a forest walk that starts in Sao Roque do Faial. The forest walk opened in 2011 is quite steep in places and not recommended for less experienced walkers. However the Levada walk is much easier. I would recommend taking a lunch with you to eat at the point where the walk reaches the river on the valley floor, before retracing your steps back to the starting point. (time taken 2 hours each way)

This Levada is easy to access from Funchal on the 53 SAM bus to Faial. The bus stop is at Cruz outside a cafe. The walk is clearly signposted on the left side of the road. You have two options as the Levada splits. Our choice was the right hand fork and it proved to be a lovely 3 hour walk. 1 and 1/2 to the rocky outcrop at the end of the river bed and then returning on the same route. A delightful experience and an easy walks but take care as some of the hand rails are in a bad state of repair.

This walk gives an on-site into the subsistence farming on this steep rocky land. Every flat piece is land is planted and farmed by hand. The levada is obviously essential to provide water to these inaccessible farms
Nice flat walk but has many tour parties
Great to have a bar at the beginning and end and one in the middle as well. Good for refreshments and comfort breaks (even have toilet paper!).

We started at the end of the Levada just above Porto da Cruz and walked past several gardens/farmed areas prior to getting the wilder parts of the levada. In hindsight I probably would not bother with this first part and start from just off the Cabeco do Moinho, though there is a snack bar/corner shop near where we started.

As you walk up the gradual incline, the river rises up alongside - initially it's only a far away rumble then it gets closer and closer until it's right alongside the levada. You then cross the river and continue the walk on the other side but we stopped here as the water was pretty raging and the rocks were slippy underfoot.

The views across the canyon and Eagle Rock are pretty breathtaking but there aren't too many waterfalls on this walk if that's what you are after. (Also many fewer tourists than on the more famous routes).

As ever, walking shoes are recommended.

This is relatively straightforward to get to by bus. This is a lovely walk up and down a valley. The walk is relatively easy to do. The views are great across the valley and so out to sea. At the end of the walk up the valley the path meets the river and it is a great place for a picnic before the return journey along the path.
