Just WOW!!

We stayed in an air b and b just 30 mins from Bica Da Cana and we loved it! Not specifically the actual viewpoint (although this is stunning too especially for sunset and sunrise as you are above the clouds!) but if you drive along the road around the mountain there are a few other huge viewpoints and just wow! We spent two sunsets here watching the sun go down, the windmills turn, the clouds below us and it was truly magical. Its nowhere near as busy as Pico De Arieiro and honestly I think we might have loved it more! Its also super close to Fanal and its not unusual to have clear skies from Bica and then fog in fanal.... best of both worlds!

There is plenty of parking for Bica along the road to the main view point and the walk up is only a short 10 minutes and very easy if you want to head to the main view point. We also saw people on the top that had camped overnight so I guess you can do this if you wish - there was noone else around at all at sunrise and only 2-3 others coming and going for sunset.. perfect!

There are so many great things to see in Madeira that aren't listed on Trip Advisor. Punch through the clouds into the blazing sunshine and the view is surreal. Just East of the intersection of 101 & 211 you'll see lots of parked cars. East of the car lot is a road you can hike down to Rabacal (a tiny cluster of homes in a valley). It takes a little over an hour to reach. There are restrooms and water at the bottom. The best part is the road is closed to motor traffic and a government shuttle bus runs nonstop from the top to bottom. For a few Euros you can jump on board the bus straight back to your car!

Could not find the viewpoint and after walking around in bushes for 20 minutes I gave up. Missed sunrise. Wish the viewpoints are marked. This is not the first one I could not locate. There were no other cars just me, so I guess that explains it: an unofficial viewpoint. Have to stop reading online blogs. Have not caught any sunrise due to bad weather in 11 days on Madeira. Today was a good weather to actually see sunrise. Nope. Disappointed.

On the drive along the Paul de Serra road it's easy to miss this. Look for parked cars on the bend just after the crossroads leading to the ER209 south. Easy walk up a track to the viewpoint. The day we went we were high above the clouds. Stunning.
Beware - you need to turn back to the crossroads and not continue hoping to get to Encumeada. The road is closed.

Easy to reach and just an easy walk to the top. Nice view when weather is good. Not to crowded for sun rise.

Feels like a lost place on foggy days.

I know Areiro gets all of the attention for its sunrise but this was spectacular and very accessible.

Also convenient for people who cannot walk a long distance, because it is not too far from the parking and the path is wide. The view to the sea and to the mountains is worth to go there!

The lava-plateau, Cristo Rei on Paúl da Serra is the only flat area on Madeira. From there you can walk to Bica da Cana and follow a path with a beautifull view on Sao Vicente (North-coast of Madeira. Then you can descend to the Levada do Norte and further on through long tunnels you will arive in the Encumeada-pass. Visit Google-earth and you will find it;
