About
A journey into the world of porcelain… Undergoing renovation works between 2014 and 2016 the Vista Alegre museum intends to show the factory’s history, the aesthetic evolution of porcelain production and its significance in Portuguese society of the 19th and 20th centuries, through one of the most complete museum collections of that kind. Besides the renovated exhibition rooms you may visit, as part of the Museum circuit, the Chapel honouring Nossa Senhora da Penha de França and the Oficina de Pintura Manual [hand painting workshop] of the Fábrica da Vista Alegre, where you will be able to see the delicate ceramic painting.

Expected much more...

Famous porcelain industry. The shops disappointed. Both outlet and main shop. Stores around the world offer very nice products from Vista Alegre, but you cannot say that by visiting the production site. Visit to the industry was not allowed.

We loved going into the no-longer-operational industrial kilns! And, the up-close visit to the handpainting area of the factory was amazing...What artists they are!

Pleasant day - nice walk

I have been here a few times and I must say the staff is more pleasant than they have been before. Great porcelain pieces (and also outlet pieces) but the museum is worth it all. Interesting history and a chance to see the artisans at work. Food/drink pricey but one expects that.

Just beautiful, the grounds and museum are beautiful, and huge . The shop at the end is beautiful and you can purchase all kinds of things. You must also visit the attached family church that is just beautiful. A great day out and a must visit .

Interesting side visit, especially for ceramics enthusiasts

I came by public transportation from Aveiro. It was easy. The Transdev office in Aveiro showed me where to get the correct bus. They also gave me slightly incorrect times -- about 15 minutes off. The bus ride is about 25 minutes. The bus driver alerted me where to get off and pointed me in the right direction for the short walk to the museum. Because the bus runs infrequently, I had to spend much more time there than needed. The museum cafe was closed, but fortunately, I had brought a snack and had the novel I was reading downloaded on my phone. There was also a place to get food by the bus stop, about a 10 minute (or less) walk from the museum.

Because I work in ceramics, and especially like porcelain, I loved this museum -- seeing the products and design from different periods of time, learning about the history of porcelain commercial production in Portugal, and visiting the studio where artist/workers do painting on porcelain today. Historically, the provision of services and community functions to what appears to have been been a largely female workforce in the decades before WWII was also very interesting to me. When I was there, the English version of the printed material was not available, but there were English explanations of exhibits. There was no audio tour option even though it looked like there might sometimes be one. The place was quite empty, maybe because if was a weekday. I think most visitors come primarily to shop in the outlet store.

On the grounds, in addition to the museum, the outlet store, the regular (first quality) store, and the hotel, there is a 17th century chapel described as a national monument and tiny jewel for its tiles and art. The chapel pre-dates the factory but was later bought by the factory owner. It is only open at set scheduled times with a tour guide. Admission to the museum includes the chapel. The guide spoke limited English, but managed to communicate some of the history.

Very interesting for porcelain lovers

The old factory is now in part also a museum. The museum and the outlet shops are very interesting for porcelain lovers. Not only the museum is fascinating the whole place is quite remarkable for the chapel, the old theatre, the workers houses and the landlord’s palace, now a hotel. Enjoy!

Very interesting museum in beautiful settings

The museum itself and the chapel are very much worth a visit. It was great to learn a bit more about this icon of Portuguese porcelain manufacturing. I wouldn't want to miss this when visiting Aveiro.

The entrance fee of EUR 6.00 is on the high side, but we found it worth the while.

Interesting review of history of the brand and porcelain in Portugal
Oct 2018 • Couples
Museum is in the outskirts of Aviero on the edge of a residential area. Google maps will get you here but you'll need to watch for signs at the factory entrance to get to the museum which is located behind it. Museum is well laid out and clearly signed in Portugese and English. Shows the progression of the factory from general pottery manufacturer to specialist porcelain maker.
The factory was really it's own little town with a church, school and fire department etc plus worker housing. The museum fills most of these but a hotel seems to have absorbed the houses. Not a spectacular site but interesting and a different view of life in Portugal.
