I and my boyfriend's family found ourselves driving around this area of Tuscany after visiting a nearby winery. We passed by Castello Vicchiomaggio and decided to stop in for a tasting. No reservations were required to just pop in and do a tasting/have a glass of wine. A tour was just departing as we arrived so we had the tasting area to ourselves with our lovely wine server Serena. She spoke excellent English and had a great sense of humor. She talked to us about the area and the wine many other things, making our visit delightfully enjoyable. She really turned our visit from good to wonderful! Considering it was a spontaneous visit, we were very glad that we decided to stop by.

While visiting Tuscany we were looking to do some wine tasting and after a couple of failed attempt near Florence (wineries either closed or not answering) then we looked towards Greve and decided on trying out Castello Vicchiomaggio. Coming from north from Florence the Navigation took us of the A1 and through beautiful mountain roads towards Greve, a nice experience.

We arrived around 2.30 and got advised by Nadia from the wine shop of the estate that the wine tasting was not before 4.30, and since we were hungry, she kindly arranged to call a famous butchery in Greve to stay open for lunch allowing us to kill time before the tasting. The lunch were amazing, Thanks!

We returned to the estate and started the wine tour in the cellar learning about how this winery's production and continued out in the field to see the wine stocks before going to the wine shop for wine tasting. The estate has a beautiful garden and is situated on a mountain ridge with an amazing view over the wine fields.

We tasted 3 wines being a Chianti Classico, a Chianti Grand Selection and a Super Tuscan all served with bread and cold cuts and Nadia explained detailed about the different wines. Everyone was raving about the very accommodating Super Tuscan, but personally I can recommend the Grand Selection, which I bought several bottles of.

The shop itself has a lot of local home delicacies to offer as well and we shopped quite some lovely products there.

A very beautiful old castle set up very high on a hill. Stunning views from the infinity pool was a highlight. Had an incredible meal, which throughout my vacation in Italy remained my favorite dish, pappardelle al sugo di cinghiale (wild boar sauce). Compliments to the chef!! It was very hot during our stay and the infinity pool was heaven to swim in and cool off in and had stunning views of the valley below.
Although advertised as having air conditioning our room (Lorenzo) was very hot and stuffy with no evidence of an air conditioning unit and/or vents for air to be coming in from. Lots of gnats in the bathroom but other than those two minor things a very beautiful place with so much old world charm and a very serene setting and an excellent dinner.

Not a fan. Our first stop of the day at 10:30. They gave us old bottles of wine to taste left over from the day before, glasses were dirty, and we felt very rushed. When we were paying they opened new bottles of wine for the next people tasting so I know we didn't get very good service. They also didn't have enough change in their cash drawer to give us change.

The Castello was definitely less than what we expected . We arrived in the evening to find that their restaurant wasn’t open after driving for more than 8 hours we were quite disappointed. The room we booked a suite was large/ spacious if quite dated. The breakfast was the worst we experienced in Tuscany and we would that one of the cakes on the breakfast buffet had mold in it...when I brought this to the attention of the front office she just shrugged it off...not what you expect for this level of hotel or experience. Our rating would be that the property needs major renovations/ upgrades. It has the premier view in the area, but the service is mediocre, the food was poor, and the lack of caring for the clients was unacceptable. We would not return.

We actually stayed at the castle, in addition to doing the wine tasting and it was definitely one of the most interesting places I've stayed. While enchanting, I wouldn't call this castle luxurious- but what makes this place is the quietness, views, and service. During the sticky, hot summer months- we were worried about our room (more like small apartment) staying cool without an air conditioner. They promised us that if we kept the shades closed during the day, we would be fine- and we were. The infinity pool is a must. I spent hours in the pool while looking at Tuscany's lush rolling hills. POSITIVES: quiet, close to several wineries, secluded, it's a CASTLE- but old &family-owned, nice spread for breakfast NEGATIVES: no restaurant (only open a few nights a week for dinner) so bring your own food or be prepared to drive for food, you NEED a car (we arrived by bus).

We stayed here for 5 nights and didn't want to leave! The hotel is stunning, I had high expectations from the pictures but it really went above and beyond. The grounds are beautiful with amazing views, great pool facilities and plenty of places to sit with a glass of wine in the evenings. The room we went for was the cheapest option - the standard double in the castle - and other than the bed being a little bit stiff and uncomfortable, the room was great! It was very spacious, with a mini kitchen, modern bathroom with the most amazing shower and plenty of clothes storage. The breakfast buffet had a very good selection, the best out of 3 B&Bs that we stayed at over the course of our holiday and although there was only filter coffee out, we were able to ask for espressos (free of charge) from one of the staff who was looking after the breakfast area. One thing to bare in mind is that the hotel restaurant is only open for dinner on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and lunch Monday to Friday. Their Monday night banquet which involves a wine tour and dinner for 50 euros is totally worth doing - the food was excellent and the wine plentiful! The hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Greve in Chianti, where there are some really good restaurants for the rest of the days. Our favourites were Nerbone Di Greve and La Cantina!

We reserved the "Count Agostino's Wine and Gastronomy Lunch" and were very pleased with the both the tour and the lunch. 35 euros per person gets you a visit to the vineyards, the barrel room and a three course lunch with wine pairing. Desert is a heaping plate of cantucci biscuits (biscotti) paired with Vin Santo. You say you won't eat them all - but you will. It was a decent drive from Florence on our way to Montelcino and worth the trip.

I went here on a bus trip for the day, the whole area is enchanting in Chianti, I find it hard to describe the beautiful scenery, it is magical to me, the Castello Vicchiomaggio sits on a hilltop, surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, it is 600 years old and we sat in the huge dining room, with soaring ceilings, looking out at the beautiful scenery, eating and drinking wine, honestly I could have stayed forever, alas it was a tour and we had to leave but I will never forget it!

This is a truly amazing place. My husband and I were lucky enough to be guests at a wedding here three years ago. All this time on, it has stayed in our memory as one of the best places we have ever visited. Hence the long overdue review.

We were kindly greeted at reception and shown to our apartment. We had a two bedroom apartment on the ground floor, which we shared with two friends. Both rooms were beautifully furnished and extremely clean. The bedding was clean and fresh, living room/kitchen area was comfortable and had all the amenities you would expect in a modern hotel. The bathroom was big and had a powerful shower.

As there was a large number of us staying here due to attending the wedding, I also had the opportunity to have a look in other friends rooms. Each and every room was impressive. The different authentic furniture in each room, gave it a feeling of the one off find this place is.

Breakfast was tasty and I'd definitely recommend booking in for breakfast, unless you want to take a car journey into town for supplies. All staff were friendly and attentive.

The infinity swimming pool is the best I have ever been in. The view rolls on for miles and miles. The pool itself, and the surrounding lounging area, were both spotless. The pool area never felt full with guests and was an extremely relaxing area.

The wedding itself was stunning, from the service in the church nearby, to the reception drinks and meal at the hotel. The wedding food was the best I've ever had at a wedding and again the staff were extremely professional and friendly throughout.

If you are looking for a wedding venue or indeed just a place to stay, I would recommend Castello Vicchiomaggio time and time again.
