A lot of fun, make sure you only pay for what you’re there for.
Really great experience about 45 minutes outside of Taormina. And easy and pretty drive through the country takes you to the mountains to see the gorges. We did the walking, splash pad and basic visit, but wish we had just done the basic. The walking path takes you to the Venus Source which is beautiful and gives you above views of the canyon below, but the real star is the gorge itself. Taking the lift down makes it an easy trek for old and young. With our 5 and 8 year old we were able to work our way up quite a bit through the canyon. The kids had swim shoes which I would recommend. My feet were torn up by the end. The water is VERY cold but very refreshing on a hot August day. Fight through it and work your way up the canyon. It’s worth it. Skip the splash pad. We did it for the kids but it was way too expensive for what it was.

    Canyoning with Sicily Green Adventures
We did the canyoning/bodyrafting tour with Sicily Green Adventures which we believe was the best thing we could have done to explore the Alcantara Gorge! Not only is it a fantastic way to discover the wonders of nature and the beautiful scenery, but it's also incredibly fun and a real thrill - perfect for every adventurer out there! We rockclimbed, abseiled, bodyrafted and jumped our way through the gorge, always supported by our fabulous guides Francesco and Turi! They made sure everyone was comfortable at all times, pointing out different ways to proceed on our journey - there was always an option for those wanting to take it a bit slower (which was presumably much appreciated by the young family in our group)! The most amazing part of the tour was that we were pretty much alone in nature for most of it, which I did not even appreciate until we reached the end of the gorge, where crowds were gathering already. If you want a more peaceful, scenic way to explore nature whilst also having the adventure of a lifetime I cannot recommend this tour enough!

    Alcantara Gorge
My friend and me had a wonderful time with Cesco and Turi!!! Both of them were very helpful, we felt safe the entire time we were canyoning with them. They were very professional and they gave us very clear instuctions which were very easy to follow. They took pleanty pictures and videos of us. I would 10/10 recomend this to anyone who is looking for an adventure in nature on Sicily! 😁😁

    Disappointing botanical park
The gorge has a botanical park that you pay to get into. It is very disappointing with hardly any botanical flowers and few botanical plants and lots of areas that are not looked after. You pay 9 euros to walk round and then you can use the lift to go down to the gorge. The gorge is spoilt by over use of signage and fencing and has lost its natural look. The whole park is very commercial and ruins the gorge which is worth a visit.

Needs a full day to properly appreciate it
We arrived quite late in the day so could only get the "basic" ticket and view the main gorge from the little beach. Absolutely stunning and next time I will make sure we make a day of it as there are several hiking trails and a reasonably priced café. There is also allegedly a free entrance but this is not recommended in winter - we were told it was "a miracle" they were even open as the river usually floods in January - keep an eye on the weather forecast and the morning skies if you are planning a visit.

    Well worth a visit
The gorge is about a half hour drive inland from Taormina and is well worth a visit. There is a small car park across from the gorge and a ticket must be purchased from a kiosk just up the hill. You can buy a combined ticket for the gorge and the botanical park or either separately. From the botanical park there are several lookout points down into the gorge below. There are steep steps down to the bottom of the gorge or a lift if you pay extra. You can walk through the gorge until the first set of rapids and the rock formations are really interesting - further access is only allowed with water activity staff and you must be in wetsuits and helmets. There are lots of activities available if you enjoy water sports but it would be best to pre-book. It's a beautiful site and very interesting. Lots of people sunbathing by the river and I imagine it would be very busy in high season. Access to the river and gorge is only in the summer months so do check if it is open if going earlier or later. A small café serving drinks and snacks at river level and a restaurant and shop at road level.

At the entrance of the park (Parco Botanico e Geologico) we were told the normal 12€ ticket allows only to the pond underneath, not into the gorge nor the part downstream. So we were ushered to buy the river hike ticket (30€ each) and join the tour. That ease a plain lie.
Well, in any place visited wituring h this tour we found independent hikers, kids and sunbatherson their own. In the gorge our guide stopped at a given point and lot of other visitors were even further.
Just buy the ticket for the lift, or, even better, you can access the gorge by public staircase (scalinata comunale) for 1.50€

And maybe our expectations were too high.

So please note. We visited in March, and maybe Coronavirus was putting a bit of a damper on things, which might explain the complete absence of food in the cafe, but not the lack of apology.

We could only do the walk, which takes less than an hour. And is frankly underwhelming. I really have seen better gorges.

We had expected nature, but they have tried to make it like a mini nature theme park. And then lost interest.

So there are 4 very random foam creatures that really should be put out of their misery.

Signposts are hanging off. Seats are covered in, ahem, mess.

It really felt unloved and past it's sell by date.

It was such a disappointment.

The Gola is very pretty and relaxing but be warned because currently it is mostly closed. You can only walk along the top, and half the park is off limits. It's impossible to descend to the bottom. The price is only €5 instead of €10 but basically it's a half hour jaunt.

We parked on the 'official' parking, paid 1 euro (it's donation based at mentioned below) and walked to the municipal staircase that is just a very short walk up the road.
The ticket boot is on the opposite side of the road. 1.5 euro pp.
We did the stairs with our toddler, so the challenger is doable.
The beach was smaller then we imagined and unfortunately no real hikes go from here.
We arrived around 10.30 am and went back upstairs around lunchtime. It was getting really busy by then.
I would advice to wear water-resistant shoes / swimming shoes for the pebbles.

We booked the river walk and enjoyed it very much. The only downside was, that we were the only English speaking two in the whole group, therefore all the information was given in Italian. We did get a translation buch much much shorter. Maybe they should split the groups by language...

Otherwise very busy place but also nice to cool down. Dont forgett your swimming gear! However, if we would not have done the river walk, we would have probably only spent 1h or so here.

I went to this place as part of the etna tour. Loved it but was not informed that you need to bring beach shoes for the stones and a towel. You will need this if you want to go in the water. Nevertheless we loved this place. You pay €6 to go down and visit it and there are places to eat and go to the WC
