- dee090802 contributionsFabulous gardenWe took the bus from ischia port. I asked driver to let us know the stop but we were also able to follow the route on our phone. It's a short walk from the bus stop down to the gardens. Our hotel had prebooked tickets for us for the gardens and concert later that afternoon so we collected & paid for them at the entrance kiosk. The gardens are wonderful and there is so much more to see than I expected. The terrace cafe is definitely worth a stop. We were there in September and the concert was held indoors in the concert hall and not at the open-air theatre. We didn't particularly enjoy the music choice at the concert. The concert finished about 6pm and we caught a bus back to the port (although there was a taxi driver(s) outside the gardens for anyone who did not have transport.) The bus back (a Saturday evening) was packed and we were lucky to get on, although at later bus stops more and more people (who were coming back from the beach) squeezed on so it wasn't a particularly pleasant trip back so a taxi may have been a better idea in hindsight! I definitely recommend the gardens if you have time to visit.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2023
- 23RUNNottingham, United Kingdom524 contributionsBeautiful half day visitLovely gardens going up the hillside, very beautiful planting, water features and great views. There are many steps so not sure how a physically disabled visitor would cope. The cafe is a rather nice place to stop for refreshments and reasonably priced. We went on the bus and walked 300m or so to the entrance. The buses run very regularly.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2023
- KKotleyOtley, United Kingdom13 contributionsBreathtaking !These gardens are just stunning. How the Waltons had the vision to design and then deliver all the different elements is awesome. Difficult to access ( not that well sign posted to get there and many steps and climbs in the garden) but if you are fortunate to manage it then go !Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2024
- hallimadRugby, United Kingdom33 contributionsBeautiful gardensThese gardens really are fantastic. Perfectly manicured in a casual way. Beautiful design. Amazing views and a fabulous concert ( Cambridge jazz band) watched in the Greek theatre. Wonderful, thank you. I would definitely return. Give ample time to your visit; we had 2 hours and would’ve liked more.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 9, 2024
- John OGodalming, United Kingdom14 contributionsMagical placeThis is a magical space. Beautiful gardens with a host of interesting plants in wonderful settings. The cafe is perfectly set amid plants and views over the gardens. There are extensive views over the Bay of Forio. During the summer there are also concerts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons that are really worth attending. Entrance to the gardens and concert was just €20 per person. Great value.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 18, 2024

- Mfamtravel4401Chicago, Illinois101 contributionsNot to be missed!Don’t miss the Mortella Gardens if you’re in Ischia. Beautiful. We stayed rather close, in Forio, but the walk there was treacherous. We took a taxi, and the second time we visited, the bus. The cafe is like a little bird’s nest with nice food.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 8, 2024
- MhairiMaidstone, United Kingdom123 contributionsNice visitThe gardens are found down a street from the main road and can be accessed by bus. They are very well laid out so you don’t feel you have missed anything. The map provided with tickets is very useful. We went in August and it was too hot to enjoy the upper terraces for us although lots of people were wandering through happily. We did visit them though, there are a few places to sit but not often in shade. The indoor area by the cafe requires 1€ per person; there was a bit of a queue as people didn’t realise this and were trying to get in. The cafe was nice with a range of light dishes and cakes and was in shade. The gardens are very nice.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 11, 2024
- arsenalterryEngland, United Kingdom346 contributionsA must visitBeen wanting to come here for a couple of decades and finally managed it. It did not disappoint. Wonderful area to visit, very peaceful with spectacular views. Gardeners heaven and if you like Classical music, William Walton won’t let you down. The tea room is a lovely place to rest and refresh with some food and drink and very reasonably priced. Lovely to hear William Walton being played in the background. Many surprising plants and pond life. There is also the William Walton Museum and gift shopVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 21, 2024
- Ann F4 contributionsLots of shade and stunning viewsWe visited after lunch on a very hot day. What a wonderful place, providing lots if much needed shade. The views across Forio from the hill garden are stunning (there are ramps for anyone who struggles with steps). Had delightful tea and cake in the cafe. As someone who loves taking photos of plants I loved it. We got the bus there, and you get dropped off on the main road a short walk from the entrance. We treat ourselves to a a taxi back.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 27, 2024

The garden is quite beautiful. We spent two hours wandering the gardens and discovered many new plants there. The area is extremely well-kept and preserves a natural setting with little influence from the outside world. You can sit down inside the gardens and have some coffee and sweets, too.

Coming from Forio, it’s a shortish walk from the bus stop. Entry fees are substantial especially for a family. The gardens go up one side of the hill and down the other. There are some great views out towards the sea and there are plenty of steps to climb. The hobbit like shop is beautifully curated, in fact every facet of the gardens, the cafe, is really wonderful. I found the gardeners knowledgable and really enjoyed speaking botanical taxonomy with them. These gardens were a very memorable event in our trip to Ischia and enjoyed by the whole family. Highly recommended.

It's a nice garden but during our stay there were dogs barking all the time, some people yelling and laughing really hard in the neighbourhood, it was impossible for us to enjoy the visit. There is a nice little pond with an oriental style pavilion where you can sit and find some peace but with that horrible and vulgar background noise it was a frustrating experience. Apparently they don't really care about paying visitors, allowing such bad behaviour around them.

A true micro climate in these varied gardens with plants from China, Australia, New Zealand and more. Quite a surprising day here. Worth visiting to understand the passion of Brazilian born Susanna Walton who created these unique Gardens since the day she moved to Ischia with composer Sir William Walton in 1956

We walked from Forio - not a long walk although all uphill on the way so something to consider. The gardens are also all on a hill - it says wheelchair accessible but I would question whether a pram or wheelchair could feasibly be used around the gardens. Absolutely beautiful view from the top! Much welcomed lunch in the cute tearooms. Would recommend if you have a spare day - not necessarily a must do. €12 entry per adult is a little excessive for the size of the gardens. I would imagine catching a concert there would be fabulous, though!!

Really beautiful gardens, well worth a visit. April was quiet on the island, but the gardens were still packed with cruise tour groups (my pet hate!) and narrow pathways became congested. Not much spare space in these gardens so would suggest later in the day visits to avoid crowds? The café is absolutely gorgeous; very classy and beautifully decorated - don't miss! Be aware the gardens are very steep. You can avoid steps and stick to slopes for the most part but it's still a pull. We got a taxi to the car park which is at the top and far end of the garden but has it's own entrance. We then walked down through the garden and got another taxi from the bottom.

I would rate my experience 5 out of 5. This place is absolutely beautiful and is worth a visit. I would recommend instead of going to websites to purchase the tickets to go directly to the place and buy your tickets there. It was only like 12 euros.

Does anyone know which bus number you need to get from Ischia Porto to Giardini La Mortella? Also, how close does the bus get to the entrance?
Written January 17, 2019
As said below it is a few hundred yards from the bus stops. It is a slight up and down hill. You can get either the clockwise bus or the anticlockwise bus. Don't forget to get your ticket stamped when you get on the bus.
Have a lovely time. We certainly did.

how much is a taxi to the gardens from the port?
Written August 28, 2018
It depends on which port you are referring to (there are 3 in the island). It shoudl be 10 to 12 euro from Forio, 15 to 18 from Casamicciola and 20 to 25 from Ischia porto. Make sure you settle the fare in advance, as taxi drivers unfortunately often try to ... take you for a ride.

Does anyone know anything about the concerts held here.We are visiting ischia in October and would like to visit especially if there is a music event.
Written July 25, 2018
During the year we have 3 concerts seasons: two chamber music seasons, in Spring and Autumn, and one youth orchestras season, in July. for a total of more than 60 yearly. Music is part of our Foundation's mission, so disregards the comments of those who maintain we don't have many thorugh the year. In September and October, concerts are held on Saturdays and Sundays at 5 pm. You can check the calendar AND book a ticket on our website dedicated page, look for musica and Incontri musicali (links are not allowed here).

Grazie
Written May 19, 2018
Добрый день, Ольга! У итальянцев, если указано время открытия-закрытия, так точно и будет. Но непосредственно перед и после концерта Вы сможете пройтись по аллеям нижней террасы , т. К . Вход в театр в глубине сада.
