The archeological museum in the castle at Vibo Valentia is well worth a detour. There is a most impressive collection of antiquities from local excavations with a very informative overview of the Greek, Roman and medieval background of this area. A very important region of Magna Grecia. An excellent display, beautifully designed. We were treated to a tour by one of the museum's archaeologists, and found the experience to be one that we would highly recommend to anyone interested in the origins of Calabria. The view from the castle ramparts was impressive on a cloudy day. On a clear day, almost unbelievably, you can see from Ischia to Mt. Etna. Nice shop.

On top of the hill is the castle with great views across the countryside and inside is the well laid out archeological museum. The display on pot making was very informative and the bronze helm its upstairs were magnificent.

What is impressive is to put yourself in the place of the enemies who attacked this castle....how they coul won?

Decided to take in some historic places away from the beach. Noble castle, interesting museum of Greek and Roman artefacts. Stunning views from the walls. Very little english translation of the exhibits. Can park for free right outside on the road. Very narrow getting up there, if you're a nervous driver.

I liked the castle very much but unfotunately it's the only location that worth a visit in Vibo Valentia. The rest of the city doesn't offer you many attractions.
It has a big and nice museum. A guide explained us few this about it's history.
The last but not the least, impressive view from the top of the cliff.

Situated in a castle there is a very good display of Greek & Roman artefacts dating from C7th BC -C3rd AD. They come from local sites & are well displayed. Artefacts include Roman underwater finds, Greek terracotta objects, a Greek helmet & a Greek bronze head. It is well worth a visit.

We drove to this castle and museum today.Entrance fee is 3 euros each. The setting is true to life and the artifacts are outstanding when you think of their antiquity. BUT this wonderful place seems to be only for Italians to understand their history as almost all of the explanations are only in Italian. We were disappointed but cooled off at the lovely cafe bar nearby.
