I believe strongly in supporting the local merchant. I have been a faithful customer at Dean and Don’s for 20 some years. In the past their peaches from South Carolina were the best locally to be found. I like the bakery items from a bakery on Cary Street in Richmond.
In the past many years the strawberries have also been phenomenal. Even though they may Have looked like they’re almost over ripe in the past it wasn’t so, they were really great strawberries. This year I am so disappointed. The strawberries look nice and ripe but are tasteless, I mean absolutely taste less. I hope they might be able to return to the prior vendor of their strawberries since they were the bomb.

Last year I would drop my grandson off to school and head to Dean and Dons for flowers for my yard and groceries for dinner, I was excited to go today to look for the same. My disappointment in Dean and Dons is not in the produce or flowers they offer. My disappointment is in the cashiers in the vegetable market. They are the most unfriendly and unprofessional young ladies I have had to deal with in a long time. They don't speak or even look at you as they take their money. Their attitudes are that they cant wait for you to leave. They don't thank you for your purchase. They seem to be looking down their noses at you. Today there were three cashiers. The overweight one was eating at the register and pretending to be busy so you would not come thru her line. The store was practically empty. There were two other ladies besides myself. Dean and Dons may have fresh produce but it is not fresh enough to be treated like dirt when you are shopping there. Someone needs to train these young ladies on customer service. I can just as easily go to Walmart. I didn't feel welcome in this store.

We have been buying fresh fruit and vegetables from here for years. Not sure where they get their fresh corn from, but it is always good from early spring to late fall. They have local stuff when in season, and make sure to note it as local. Most of it comes from small farms out of the area, but is much better than the stuff are grocery stores.

Make sure to go to the one on Jefferson. The one on LaSalle gets the old cast off produce and has questionable quality. It's a shame that they treat this store as the trash dump or compost heap.

Dean and Don's is a farmer's market and gardening center. They are closed on Sundays, but open 8-5 on all other days. It is seasonal however, so it closes during the winter. The garden center has a longer season than the market. They sell Christmas trees in December and pumpkins in November. Their fruits and vegetables are usually fresher than grocery stores and prices are decent. It is kind of hit and miss as to cost comparison to grocery stores. Sometimes cheaper, often similar price, and sometimes more expensive. The workers are friendly and helpful. The garden center has a nice variety of plants and flowers. They also sell some bags of potting soil and mulch. It is worth a visit.

I have experienced the same rude cashiers. No personality at all even the managers. Try and support your local businesses but they still need to respect all customers. Corn is fabulous and tomatoes. Please improve the attitudes in the Newport News location. I said I was not going to shop but I love the fresh produce. The cashiers seem like they are made to work there. Maybe it's a family things.

There is nothing special about this Wanna-Be farm store. It is a tiny little store with an oversized parking lot.

Been shopping here for many years, and I have found Dean and Don's fresh food to be truly fresh. For me, Spring arrives when Dean and Don's opens. I have also found their staff helpful and pleasant. When something I expect them to have is missing, I ask and if it is back in the cooler, someone will bring it out. Cashiers always pleasant, and when I cannot locate an item, helpful to tell me where it is. I am always surprised at how little my week's worth of veggies costs.

I live several blocks away and I drive by there frequently. In the summer, parking lots are full. I don't know how the folks work so hard in the heat! Great choices for southern fare (okra!)
Highly recommend the Garden Center, too!
