What a beautiful port this is. Bustling with tourists who are amply catered for with an abundance of pavement cafes. There are narrow streets to walk through and explore as well as the main quayside. Most arrive on cycles and there appear to be no parking restrictions for cycles. The port has a colonial feel with low rise buildings. An empty moat surrounds the port with impressive walls and earthworks. There is an indoor market hall on the quayside that sells the most amazing range of artisan food.

Very picturesque. Beatiful oild setting around the marina..all withon old fortified walls. Despite being busy the pkace felt calm. Very quiet in the evening as a lot of day trippers leave the island

Was really looking forward to this Ille de Re ship excursion. Was disappointed by our island experience but the port was definitely the highlight. We didn't but could imagine spending 2-3 hours here. Just be aware restaurant and shop prices were expensive

Fab 2 days in Ile de Re - first visit and we will be back. Lovely port area with good selection of restaurants/bars. Was quite busy - would advise to book cycles in advance. Great to run as the sun come up.

This is a lovely port with lots to see and do. There is a good selection of places to eat and an excellent Ice Cream shop, La Martiniere, which has amazing choices of ice cream. It is busy with people and bikes but it still has a relaxing feel and you can spend hours just sitting on one of the many benches around the water's edge. There are some nice shops but they are pretty expensive. Definitely worth a visit.

Last year we were here in August and the crowds were so huge that you couldn’t really appreciate the place. In September, this is still a busy venue, but there is enough space to stroll around the port area without being constantly jostled. Great selection of restaurants, attractive buildings and some attractive shops in the streets behind the harbour. A lovely port destination, though very much geared for tourism.

We did a day trip to Saint Martin de Re from La Rochelle. We took bus #3 from La Rochelle station which took us directly to Saint Martin. It was a sunny day and was lovely to walk around. We also rented bikes which was the best way to explore the island. Overall, a great experience and people were really nice too!

Saint Martin never fails to disappoint, it can get busy, but this adds to the experience in my opinion. Great place to sit and have a drink or eat ice cream in one of the many bars looking onto the harbour. So much choice for places to eat. There is a great creperie on the other side of the harbour, next to Tin Tin shop. There are a few bespoke shops also worth seeking out, have a look by the church!

On a hot, late summer ile de re evening we decided to return after a break of 15 years to Saint Martin. But on the whole we wished we hadn’t. Parking now is all outside the village and the atmosphere is now like a holiday camp with eateries and bars all vying for the last few euros of the departing summer.

I had been to the Ile de Re twice before but over 25 years ago. It was great to see St Martin again, but it was far busier that I remember it all those years ago. The harbour is beautiful and is a lively place with lots going on. There are many place to eat around the harbour. It was harder to take many photographs due to the large number of people there. There are also many cyclists around the harbour and so some care is needed when walking around. It was well worth the visit, but the crowds did surprise me a bit.
