Nice little Salines market with its local producers but always the same problem of parking in the official car park which is saturated on market day and therefore no other choice for those who have not found a place but to park nearby unless that this year the town hall found a way to make a little extra money on the backs of tourists with plums at €135 for those (the majority) who did not find a place in the small car park…. Funny way to build loyalty! Not great for the image of the city!

We took the tour by boat for €16 per boat. There was no point in that. The walk takes more than 25 minutes than an hour and yet we were beginners. We saw nothing except mud.
The small adjacent market is nice with pleasant merchants.
The salt shop provides a wide variety of products but the boss had vague thoughts "we have to close at 1 p.m. otherwise my 2 little employees won't be happy" and believe me there was no humor in that sentence.
Apart from that the products sold are of quality and the salespeople are really nice.

The boat trip was catastrophic... there was a lot of algae everywhere (very short passages in algae but we couldn't even see anything underwater) and the oars weighed very heavy. Algae very difficult to remove from the oars. It was exhausting and very annoying. Not at all relaxing... fortunately there were 4 of us to take turns. The route is also too narrow. In short, I do not recommend.

Sea salt is a local produce on Île d'Oléron, and we learned all about it at Port des Salines eco-museum. Up till the 18th century, Île d'Oléron was producing salt of excellent quality - 25% of island was covered with salt marshes. The craft was eventually abandoned due to very competitive mine salt and cheap salt from southern European countries. In the 1990's, the commune of Grand-Village decided to reconstruct an old salt marsh at Port des Salines in order to preserve and protect this heritage and know-how. Since then, this salt marsh is one of seven in operation, and salt is harvested annually from April to September. Tours are available for those interested to try their hand at harvesting salt.

This was a very short stop. We were looking for a restaurant, but only found a very busy bar/cafe, the only restaurant was closed, so we moved on. We did not have time to visit the museum, or the nature trail. I am not able to make a firm recommendation, only to say that it appears to be a popular stop for visitors.

This little spot is the epicentre of Oleron's recently revived sea salt industry which is well described in an excellent museum located in former Oyster farmers' sheds. The salt pans are easily accessible and the surrounding landscape attractive. There is a very good seafood restaurant on the complex and an interesting farmers' market every Wednesday.

This is a nice place allowing to learn a little about salt processing in the area (not much though, I guess a tour would be needed to have complete picture). Anyway a nice short stroll under the sun and options to have a drink.

An interesting diversion from the beach, but not a huge amount going on other than a few touristy shops and some places to grab a snack and drink. You can hire boats and find out about salt production. That said, the oysters and white wine were good and good value. The producers' market during the summer is OK for kids, with loads of cool old wooden games, but lacking much in the way of stuff to buy for dinner. Also makes a nice cycle ride on designated paths.
