Luz-St-Saveur is a commune in South West France and it is a gateway to the Pyrenees National Park and some of the most spectacular sights ion the Pyrenees. Cycling fans are familiar with the nearby Col du Tourmalet famed as one of the most gruelling stages in the Tour de France. A renowned therapeutic spa town St Saveur has attracted many famous clients including Victor Hugo. In July 1859 Napoleon 111 and the Empress Eugenie, accustomed to thermal cures, arrived. They stayed for twenty three days. During their stay the Emperor decide to commission a vast programme of public works including this bridge which is 65m high and is at an altitude of 761m. The construction of this lovely bridge ensured that the Valley of Gavernie was made accessable to the local farming community and to tourists. The Emperors column is quite impressive and the views of the surrounding countryside are stunning. Certainly a must visit site for anybody touring the area.

This is not really about the bridge but about the whole town. A place to treasure.
This is the small town which epitomizes la belle France: ignore the big cities! I could very easily put my feet up here and eat and drink myself into an early grave.

Impressive bridge to walk over and look at. Beautiful views. Space nearby to park car and it is quiet.

Gorgious views from the bridge. Also, don't forget to take the trail at the entrance of the bridge going down to the river. Worth the hike!

Has a nice walk from town to the bridge and back. The bridge itself is pretty and obviously has a lot of history but I wouldn't say worth a special trip to see it.

Situated at the crossroads, turn right to Gavarnie and left to Argeles Gazost.
An interesting stop off point to admire the gorge and river below plus the scenery in and around this place. They do bungee jumping off this bridge!!

We just happened upon this bridge on the way from Luz Saint Sauveur to Gavarnie. So. High. You can't miss it! We did pull over and walk on it- take pictures and a closer look.

We were given a map with a good walk on it and hadn't realised that this bridge was there. It spans a lovely gorge, so well worth a visit.

An impressive bridge 3 kilometers south of Luz-St-Sauvear. Tells a bit of the history from the time of Napoleon and gives a scenic view over the valley below. It is worth making a stop on your way to Gavarnie!
