- Erik B1 contributionExcellent Teachers in an Excellent SchoolMarianne taught my beginner's course (two weeks) and Nathalie my intermediate course (two weeks). Both teachers were enthusiastic, professional, and efficient. My French improved beyond my expectations. The courses were well structured to facilitate the learning of French grammar, comprehension, speaking, and vocabulary. Periodically, Sancerre became our classroom when we visited shops and restaurants as a group and engaged with the friendly people in this quaint town. Our accomodations were comfortable and within easy walking distance of the school. Thank you, Marianne and Nathalie. The entire experience is now a delightful memory.Bonjour ! - X I2 contributionsOne week one-on-oneI stayed with my for a week in November and had one-on-one tutoring with Marianne and Guillaume. It really helped my confidence. Both Marianne and Guillaume are very sensitive and gentle no matter how much you mangle your expression. Marianne in particular as the principal is an exceptional teacher. Very patient and extremely thoughtful with her clear and neat corrections which are hand written and personalized. I’ve done quite a few other French courses with leading well known French schools but these lessons with Coeur de France took my French to a new level of fluency. It was a delight to walk around a very picturesque small hilltop town and be personally introduced to the post-mistress, the grocer, the cafe regulars and the wine merchant, all of whom were very warm in response to my stumbling expression of French. Be aware that Sancerre is a small wine town in the middle of a great wine producing region of France. This adds another layer of enjoyment of course, but it’s not a big city. So don’t expect convenience stores on your doorstep. It’s a different experience. Indeed in a way, it really is the warm heart of beautiful France and the school truly reflects this local French character, with warmth, politeness and sensitivity. The restaurants were numerous and great and the country side is simply beautiful as were the characters of the people we met.Bonjour, Thank you for your thoughtful feedback of our Coeur de France experience. - Jim L2 contributionsVive Sancerre!Excellent way to improve your French and deepen your engagement with French culture. Very high quality instruction and accommodations, and very fair pricing as well. The side trips to wineries and local attractions are great fun, and the small group size ensures a quality learning environment. Paris is exciting, of course, but Sancerre offers the experience of France profonde. Maryanne and Gerard create a wonderful experience and atmosphere. - Vivienne S39 contributionsHighly recommend this French language immersion schoolI have just completed 4 weeks at Couer de France and my French has improved hugely! The program is run efficiently with lots of different opportunities to practice your French and to experience all that Sancerre has to offer. The school owners make every effort to welcome the students and ensure the program meets their needs. The teachers are professional, engaged in their work and are well able to cater for all the different levels of French speaking capability. I stayed in their "Le Jardin" apartment - comfortable, well equipped and the best view I've ever lived with! The atmosphere in the school is warm, supportive and friendly and we both learnt a lot during our time there. Sancerre itself is so pretty and tranquil and the locals friendly and used to people practicing their French with them, which really helped. All of the staff are kind and welcoming. The evening celebrating the opening of the Olympic Games was really appreciated and my daughter and I enjoyed sharing this occasion with everyone at the school. In addition, the optional wine tasting with Gérard very informative. We will be back!Bonjour ! Thank you for your review of Coeur de France. - Rob SWalnut Creek, California15 contributionsExcellent experience at Coeur de FranceI just returned from a two week French immersion class at Coeur de France. I highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in furthering their French language skills. The school is located in the beautiful village of Sancerre which is surrounded on all sides by beautiful vineyards. I found the staff at the school to be warm, caring, and highly skilled at teaching French. The experience is so much more than classroom training. Every day the instructor would take us out in the village to interact with local shop and cafe owners allowing us real world opportunities to build our language skills while enjoying the beautiful village of Sancerre. After class there was much to enjoy in Sancerre which had many excellent cafes, shops, and beautiful areas overlooking the vineyards to take a walk. The entire experience was magical...I already miss it. Thank you to the teachers and staff at Coeur de France!Bonjour ! Thank you for your review. On a whim, we decided to go to Sancerre for 4 weeks (20 hour group class and 3 privates a week) in November. It is a very quiet time to be in this small & charming village that has seen better days, but is, even so, alive and kicking. We decided to go without a car in order to confine ourselves and not permit our time to degenerate into touristing. The off season environment made the business of learning french our primary activity/ focus which is what we wanted.
We had an intellectually demanding & challenging classroom experience and we learned, unexpectedly, a great deal of French. For the first time, I began to grasp the structure and scaffolding of the language and this will, I know, prove to be very helpful to me in the future.
The school is very well managed and our curriculum and materials were excellent. The 3 teachers assigned to us, over the course of our 4 weeks, were superb and each one brought their unique gifts and perspectives. We found all of them to be some of the best teachers we have ever experienced.
The owners of the school are quite invested in the success of the school and are committed to it’s well being. It is not a fly by night organization and there is a real effort to ensure that you will actually learn french if you want to. I found the owners pleasant, approachable and responsive. I appreciated the options available for activities and the option to not do them as well.
It was quite helpful that there were a wide variety of apartments available to us. It really did mean that we could relax into our primary business of learning French. The two apartments we stayed in were exceptionally clean & comfortable with good working kitchens and laundry facilities. The owners were very quick to resolve any issues or needs (a sharp knife, a new frying pan, a toilet issue). The kitchens were well stocked and we were able to cook some fine meals. Unlike some reviewers, we did not find these apartments to be like college living or camping - these apartments were way above any college housing we ever had and we were truly quite comfortable for our 4 week stay.
We expect to return for another 4 week course soon

We attended Coeur de France in March, and then our 17-year old daughter loved it so much we went back in July for another session! Both times, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The teachers are amazing; even the ones we weren’t directly assigned to had the kindness and patience to chat with us during breaks between classes and on the outings to the market. Classes were always fun and engaging. The teachers pace the materials well and encourage you to expand your vocabulary— meaning that they follow a clear structure to make sure you learn the language & grammar and improve at whatever level you are starting with (my daughter started as an advanced beginner; I started as an intermediate), but they also listen to your interests and goals and advance the teaching accordingly.
We lived in the Coeur de France furnished apartments on both trips. The first time in the main school building and the second time in an apartment that was a 5 min walk from the school. Both locations were fun and allowed us to be independent- we felt like we were residents of the town instead of tourists. The local shopkeepers were very welcoming and helped us with our language skills by speaking slowly and clearly to us in French. Visiting the local bakery, cafes, grocery store and wine shops offered another chance to practice our French with locals who took the time to explain their products and chat with us.
We did participate in several optional activities (the cost to do so is nominal) - visiting the farmers’ markets in two different towns, wine tasting in a vineyard, a tour of the Chateau de Sancerre gardens paired with a wine tasting, and a guided tour of the town. All of the activities are hosted in French by teachers or by the owners of the vineyards— more chances to practice our speaking skills while having fun. Our daughter is already asking to book the next Coeur de France session— we will be back!

My husband Mike and I spent a week at Coeur de France in September, and we both loved it! In fact, our only regret is that we didn't stay longer.
I had been learning French for a few years, so when we went to Coeur de France I was in an advanced one-on-one class with a teacher named Louis. He was lovely...very kind, fun, and patient. He also knows how to teach in a way that makes sense. My classes with Louis were a good mixture of grammar and conversation, and they were also a mixture of places. Sometimes we were at the school, and other times we walked in the village or went to a nearby café for coffee and lessons.
To be perfectly honest, before we went to France Mike didn't know a thing about the French language. He went out of love for me. However, he had such a great experience there in the beginner class with Marianne as the teacher that he's now learning French here at home! He wants to be able to go back to Coeur de France next year as an intermediate-level student. He said that Marianne is "magical," because she has a way of making students, even brand new ones, understand. (Even the beginner classes are completely in French, so that's really saying something.) I think it's telling that by the end of our week there Mike was able to order for himself in French at restaurants, and he could handle himself in stores as well.
Aside from our time in the school itself, we loved the village of Sancerre. It's small and beautiful, and everyone speaks to you in French, so you get an amazing immersion experience. (They're also patient if you fumble a bit!) The surrounding villages are also nice. On the weekend before classes started Mike and I went down into a neighboring village, rented a canoe, and spent a sunny afternoon paddling down the Loire River.
We highly recommend Coeur de France for French language learners of any level, and we can't wait to go back ourselves. Next time we're staying for two weeks!

I stayed at Coeur de France for two months and it has been one of the best and most useful experiences I have ever had.
A school where the staff are the kindest, most helpful people one will meet, people who are genuinely interested and want to see you succeed. I arrived in France knowing the very basic (Bonjour, comment ça va etc) and by the time I left I was able to speak confidently and read comfortably.
At Coeur de France you do not feel intimidated by the teachers, in fact you feel very at ease and very quickly acclimate to the new environment. The education is top notch, everyone is very knowledgeable, both in French and English AND in how to communicate the lesson. If there is an issue you can very quickly let them know and they will help you immediately and will make sure that you have understood.
Coeur de France is great for all levels of French speakers, from beginners to advanced, and as a former beginner, I do especially recommend it because they will really ensure that you grasp the language well, as well as that you have a great time while staying there.
It was a great experience which I am more than looking forward to reliving later this year!

I have already stayed and learnt at Coeur de France twice, once in June and the 2nd time in October this year, each time for one week only. I have been able to experience two types of courses, (group and 1-2-1) and have stayed in two different apartments provided by Coeur de France. Both stays have been utterly successful, concerning accommodation, tuition, hospitality, organized contacts with locals, wine tasting events and fun. I will come back again in May 2022, for two weeks. Isn't that an indication of the outstanding quality of Coeur de France and its staff?!

A perfect setting for studying French and the culture of this area in the Loire Valley! Sancerre is a jewel, surrounded by lovely villages, hard-working, sincere inhabitants and verdant vineyards that produce the incredible Sancerre grapes. A memorable experience is to participate in the vendange, the grape harvest that produces the mineral-rich Sancerre wines!
The exceptional school staff provides skilled instruction to ameliorate one's language skills in a charming historic building with a lovely garden complete with its own cat! Students live in apartments situated throughout the village, each one with its own character ~ I adored my apartment! This is a unique environment ~ special in its location, history, surroundings and, the school whose business helps to provide customers who in turn assist in supporting the economy of Sancerre. The restaurants and small businesses offer wonderful service, food, drink and encourage students to speak our French, at whatever level we are able. Tours to enlighten one's knowledge of this region are available through the Tourist Bureau with well informed guides. Market trips, bus transportation to towns outside Sancerre and events in town round out one's experience at Coeur de France. Highly recommend this program ~ the directors/owners, Marianne and Gerard are excellent hosts and instructors. And the staff who support the language program were also instrumental in strengthening our language skills!

I recently spent a week at Coeur de France with my husband, but he and I have very different experience levels with French. This was my husband’s third visit to the school. He started by spending two weeks one summer studying with Marianne some years ago, and since then earned a bachelor’s degree in French. I think (and hope) he’ll always want to deepen his knowledge of the culture and language. The school customized a program to meet his needs, and he thoroughly enjoyed a fruitful week working 1:1 with Louis.
While he is advanced, I am a beginner. I have secretly envied what I considered his aptitude for learning French, as my own efforts to learn the language decades ago in college were unsuccessful. But he persuaded me that Marianne could help. During the pandemic, I started working online with Marianne 1:1. From my first lesson, she made me feel comfortable and safe. I don’t know how else to describe it, but for some of us, learning a new language takes a great deal of courage. It is also rather humbling to start at something that your partner can already do well. But with Marianne, what matters is only my own progress. She is so respectful of the fact that each person learns differently and that each of us is trying our best. As an educator, she is tireless, extraordinarily patient yet exacting, and incredibly fun.
I have a long way to go, but the confidence she has given me is essential. I can now comfortably communicate basic, everyday needs in French. We moved to Paris some months ago, so this is invaluable. More importantly, I know I’ll be able to continue to learn.
Because of my online experience, I knew that my week in Sancerre would be busy between class meetings and homework. As an immersion program, the time spent on practicing French outside class meetings is essential for progress, and the school coordinates opportunities for this. I thoroughly enjoyed my week at Coeur de France. It was lovely to study with Marianne again, this time in person and with classmates.
Thank you, Marianne, Gérard, and Louis. I will certainly be back.

Bonjour Janette,
Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Coeur de France. I know that Louis enjoyed working with your husband in his One to One private tutorial. Marianne (and I) are impressed with your progress too!
Yes indeed, Marianne is a gifted teacher and through the years she has carefully trained all of our teachers in her techniques. We try our best to make our learning environment at Coeur de France supportive and encouraging -- we believe that everyone has the right to learn!
We're very much looking forward to welcoming your family back again soon,

I was at a fairly basic level of French coming in, with about two semesters of French total. This was also my first time ever visiting France and I am lucky to have found this place. Marianne is an amazing teacher with a lifetime of experience and enthusiasm, professionalism, and true love for the language and teaching that really motivates you to learn, progress FAST, and make the most of your time. Despite the difficulties of Covid, my progress was incredible, and I had the best time I've had in many, many years. Thank you also to the other amazing teachers, Valerie, Margot, and Sabrina for being so warm, professional, enthusiastic, and effective. And thank you, of course, Gérard for all your wonderful hospitality and insights into things to do in the area, not to mention your wine expertise!
The classes are pretty small, (especially now during Covid), and you get a lot of attention. The teachers are very well-attuned to each student's level and tailor the classes to accommodate everyone.
The activities, like wine tastings, visits to goat cheese farms, the weekly visit to the great open market, were all incredibly interesting, fun, and gave you a chance (especially at the market under Marianne's supervision) to use your new language skills in real-life settings.
The apartment I had was beautiful, spacious, and had REAL air-conditioning, which is often hard to find in France. For me, the freedom of having a comfortable apartment was far preferable to the prospect of a homestay in most immersion schools.
And what can I say about Sancerre except that it looks like heaven and feels like home. The locals are friendly, the restaurants are great, and the wine and goat cheese are known around the world. Whether you go for a week or two months, leaving will always be tough. I'll be back!

Bonjour Mark,
Thanks for your thorough review and sharing your experience of Coeur de France in Sancerre. It was a real pleasure getting to know you and the weekly 'concerts' were a real treat for staff and your fellow students alike!
What more can I say except that once in a while a student comes here and really leaves an impression on Coeur de France, and dare I say, Sancerre? You sure did and locals are still talking about you at 'chez Martine' cafe and elsewhere in the village!
Merci beaucoup mon ami et à bientôt j'espère,
Gérard

We just spent 2 weeks in the beautiful little village of Sancerre which seems like it is on top of the world over looking the Loire River. The teachers at the language school were fantastic and very patient with us as beginner students. I took 2 weeks of one on one classes and my wife took a small group beginner class for a week. I highly recommend coming to Coeur de France to get a good understanding of the language and the culture and meet new friends. We were able to venture out with our teachers and buy bread, cheese and many other things in the village. We were also able to go the a Market in the next town over and see and buy some fantastic food from the local vendors. Though not part of the school, I was able to drive about 20 minutes to the local aérodrome and get a 45 minute ride in an Autogyro which is like riding a 3D motorcycle in the sky. We flew over castles, vineyards, and the town of Sancerre. Look up Wind Travel ULM for info.

Coeur de France is a language school that'll teach you the technical part of learning French but also exposed us to the practical side of learning. They encouraged everyone to speak French and brought us to the market, stores, etc.. to apply what we've learned in class into practice. Amazing how I saw some of my classmates, who were very new to French and at the end of the week and especially the second week, they are able to order food, drinks and ask questions in French!!!! I would like to thank all the teachers and also of course, Marianne and Gerard, for this fantastic program!

I relate to your concerns. I have never felt that I could learn languages and certainly not boast of my memory function. So go prepared to study and have fun. You’ll meet others just as “raw” as you. Remember, have fun and enjoy every experience.

Has anyone used a private transportation service to get to Sancerre from Paris?
I can't arrive in Paris till the Sunday prior to classes and will miss the public transport connection. Since I'm not comfortable renting a car, I have to find a private transport. Any suggestions of reliable companies would be appreciated!

I will be coming alone and was only able to get a room at the school for the first week. Can anyone recommend close accommodations for a single person?

Tha apartment (fabulous) was about 700euro for the week, but it was fully furnished including washer/dryer, really well-stocked kitchen, spotless, a block from the school & in an old building, & so French!
Tuition for the week was around the same. Teachers are highly trained not just in language but specifically how to teach a foreign language. I am CELTA certified to teach EFL & was very pleased with the entire curriculum. And then there is the setting!

Hello I’m wondering about the self-catering. The other immersion schools I have been to provide full board. If I don’t have a car, are there plenty of shops/cafes nearby to buy food and meals? With thanks

Bonjour Jennifer,
Yes. There are bistros, cafés, restaurants, and even a Michelin star restaurant (Le Tour) within a 5 - 10 minute walk of the school and apartments.
Your apartment also has its own private kitchen (just like at home) where you can prepare your own meals from groceries you can purchase in the local shops.

What is the weather like in May?
Do your accommodations have air conditioning? I don't do well in hot weather.
What are the advantages of taking a group class versus the private (couples) lessons for my husband and me? We both are between Intermediate level 1 and 2.

May is springtime in France with typical springtime weather: Highs about 20c lows about 10c, expect 1 or 2 days of rain per week.
Group class: You will need to take free placement test online so we have a better idea of your levels. Be aware that different levels of Group are on different dates. For example, if you are Intermediate 1 and your husband Intermediate 2, your classes are not on the same weeks. For this reason the placement test -- for each of you -- is very important.
Placement test is good to do but not necessary for the Couple class because it can run on ANY weeks with availability regardless of level. This is because it is a private class of both of you together at the same time with the teacher. Because it is private it can be adjusted to your particular levels. Not the case with a Group class which must be taught at a specific level.
I hope this is helpful.
For MUCH more info and details please see our website.
Merci.

Where did you rent your car? I will be traveling alone and am very much intimidated by the thought of trying to drive to get out of Paris. I wonder if there are car rental places along the way for the train trip?
