This is the only state-owned Civil War museum in Virginia and is administered by the Virginia Military Institute. The site consists of three elements: The Virginia Museum of the Civil War, the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and the Historic Bushong Farm. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail System.

The museum focuses on the whole war in the Commonwealth of Virginia with special attention paid to the Battle of New Market on May 15th 1864 and the role played by the corps of cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. A total of 257 cadets from VMI participated in the battle with 47 wounded and 10 killed because of the fighting.

The museum features exhibits, dioramas, artifacts from the battle and an Emmy-award winning film called Field of Lost Shoes shown hourly in the theater.

Outside visitors will enjoy three hundred acres of core battlefield property accessible by foot or car. The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park offers two walking trails across the farm and battlefield terminating atop Bushong's Hill and two scenic overlooks 100 feet above the Shenandoah River.

Historically-named features include the Field of Lost Shoes, a wheatfield so named by cadets because of lost footwear, and the Fatal Orchard, a dangerous part of the battlefield next to the farm.

Finally, the Bushong Farm features seven buildings to explore. The two frame houses were witnesses to the battle that day. Exhibits inside tell the story of what life was like in the Shenandoah Valley before and during the Civil War.

This museum tells the story of the role the Virginia Military Institute Cadets played in the battle of New Market. There is a great movie that tells you about the battle. My children enjoyed it and got a kick out of the movie's title "Field of Lost Shoes" and were able to understand why it was called such. After touring... More

This is one of those place to stop at when you have time. The layout is a little smaller then the other Civil War museums but this tells a unique story about young cadets at the Virginia Military Institute during the Civil War and the Battle of New Market. I enjoyed the film "The Field of Lost Shoes" and the... More

It is a nice small museum. Only the first floor is accessible. Make sure you see the movie first...it explains the battle and the cadets' from VMI involvement. I had seen the movie "Field of Lost Shoes" and still found it interesting. My husband who knew nothing of the battle found it very informative. The people at the front desk... More

A neat place to learn about on of the battles of the Civil war and the involvement of VMI. So much to see in such a small area. If you are a history buff, you'll like it.

This was a nice museum to visit with the family. Farm house was closed off for renovations and some exhibits too. The movie was ok, wish it were just a bit shorter, 45 minutes for the 4 year old was tough, but it was informative about the local VMI troops in the Civil War at New Market. The walk under... More

There were quite a few exhibits still under construction, but overall a great museum about the Civil War in Va. The flag collection was very interesting an the movie was really good. There isn't much out at the battlefield itself.

There is a lot to see here and the staff is wonderful. Be sure to see their movie, "The Field of Lost Shoes" and then explore the galleries and the Bushong farm. You will find yourself transported back in time. Plan on 2+ hours.

Intersting museum about the local events during the Civil War. Take the time to see the movie and to take the outside tour to visit the Bushong Farm and stand on the Field of the Lost Shoes.

First you're should see the movie about the battle of New Market. After you visited the museum go tot the battle grounds. With your map, which you got when you bought your ticket you can visit the battle field. Numbered poles corresponding with the map on which you can read what and where happened. It's a short walk, approximately half... More
