Good Civil War Site!

We visited this museum with my family. It is a tremendous collection of authentic and interesting Civil War artifacts, along with other items from American Indians to the Second World War. This collection was put together over many decades by John M. Bracken who built the museum and is the curator. The items are very well displayed with good narrative... More

My grandson and I did a Civil War road trip and this was one of our stops. I had visited here many years ago, but the museum has been now expanded. FYI, this is a state battlefield not belonging to the NPS. Knowing the entire story of the VMI cadets, my grandson was absolutely thrilled to walk the battlefield and... More

While the museum has interesting information, particularly regarding the participation of VMI cadets in the Battle of New Market, several displays were unfinished. War Between the States art collection is interesting, but much husband, the history buff, says that more authentic artifacts are needed.

You may have learned of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, but it's the only time I heard of the "Field of Shoes." A must see for historians and tourists.

The first thing you should do here is view the video presentation. It lays a foundation for everything else you will see here. Most Civil War Museums are similar, but this is different because it highlights the VMI cadets and their contribution to this New Market Battle , which is next door. Be sure not to skip the actual battlefield... More

Great history, Interesting, lovely, melancholy, worth the visit. We enjoyed learning about the New Market battle and the VMI cadets. I would recommend this to anyone who loves history and our American culture. Highly recommended!

A private collection which turned into a museum. Not just the Civil War is covered here. Earlier materials from Colonial times and later times are also represented. If everyone in the Civil War got their pictures taken, half of them must be in this museum. The amount of information and items concentrated in one space will blow your mind. For... More

First, warning! There are two attractions here, and they're next to each other. This is the Battlefield Military Museum and it's a museum. You are NOT touring the battlefield here. What it is, is a display of someone's fabulous collection of military stuff, most of it from the Civil War, but there is a large amount of other historical artifacts as... Very good museum overlooking the battlefield. 45 minute video. Many exhibits in one area were missing, being renovated or replaced or incomplete. Complete walk of the battlefield is easy and covers close to 3 miles. Much of it can be done by car with several stops for closer examination of buildings and explanation of the battle.

Passed this attraction many times on I-81 and finally took the time to stop in. Glad we did. The 45 minute video was very informative and worth the time to watch. Interesting to go in the house and walk around the out buildings. We drove down to the farm museum area rather than walk from the visitors center to cut... More
