About
This was a feudal castle dating back to the 9th century. The towers, murder-holes and give you a real feeling of an age-old mediaeval atmosphere.

Terrific view on the city
Apr 2021 • Family
Impressive ruins when you enter the city. Easy access from the center. Not much information provided, only in a brochure. Terrific view on the city. Nice to visit. Good idea and mostly Corona safe, with indication that only one family allowed (however mostly ignored by visitors).

Avoid now, 6,5€ for a 20 min visit. No show, no free archery no refreshments.
The view is not spectacular. Need good shoes: slippery

Dear Peter, we thank you for your opinion despite your disappointment. We are sorry that your visit did not live up to your expectations. In summertime we do offer the falconshow as the archery and the bar is open. Kindly Regards, Team Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne

Nice visit - not a highlight of the city
Jun 2020
Cool castle, but the visit is quick (COVID limitations). Nice view of the valley. Access is uphill and on cobblestones, so wheel chairs or people with issues walking may have a problem. Price reasonable. Staff were nice.

Thanks for your comment! We also still enjoy the view from the castle, it put a smile on our face! Actualy we do not recommand to visit the castle in a wheelcharis because we know it's difficult. Team Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne.

Very good raptor show
Jul 2019 • Family
As others have noted, there is not much to the ruins. However, even though the commentary was not in English, my adult daughter and I found the raptor show better than expected. It is held at 11:30, 2, and 4 pm. Plenty of seating.

Steep cobbled entrance to disappointing castle
Aug 2019 • Couples
We have been to many castles throughout Europe in the last few years and I have to say this one was not one of the best we have visited.

Firstly, it was very hard to find both the car park and the entrance. (There is no dedicated car park, you just park in the town). Although you could see the castle above, on the heights above the church, the actual entrance to the castle was not obvious. We had to ask at the Tourist Office. Access is from a pedestrian 'mall' about 100m along from the Tourist office on the opposite side of the road.

The entrance to the castle gate/booth is cobbled and quite steep. I would imagine in the wet it would be very slippery. There are no hand rails. Certainly not suitable for mobility impaired visitors or even prams.

Cost (Aug 2019) to enter was 7.50 Euros each which was expensive for what there was on view. Essentially there are ruins and not much else. There were no 'activities' going on at the time we visited but apparently falconry and archery do take place. The falcons were there but were in their cages. I think they “fly” at set times during the day though archery was supposed to be on all day – it wasn't. Views were nice but you could only see the town , no further. Plenty of tables and chairs to sit on but they were all a bit tacky. Little effort appeared to have been made to tidy things up a bit. There was a bar/snack bar.

It would have been nice if there were some signs detailing a bit of history about the castle, but there was very little except one or two signs saying which room/area was which but without any description of their purpose. I believe the castle is supposed to be haunted by 'Berthe' (we saw this in a brochure) but there was nothing that we found to tell us that story.

All in all, a bit disappointing. Wouldn't visit it again. The town is nice and is obviously very popular with visitors. It was quite crowded. Lots of bars/restaurants and a few shops including a Spar supermarket. At least one camp site is nearby. There is also an extensive museum about the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes) but we will save that for another day.

Dear Jenni, Thank you for your comment! We are sorry that you were disappointed with your visit We will certainly consider your proposals, our goal is to let as many people as possible enjoy the castle! Falcon shows 3 times a day , archery all day and musique all day ... takes places in school holidays. We are happy to let you know that we have invested in new tables and chairs. Actually we are working on the information sings, as you explained a visit with information about the history of the castle, which room, the story of our Berthe, ... would be much better! Kindly regards, Team Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne

Hard to find and closed early
May 2019 • Couples
We got to town in time to visit the castle, but could not figure out where to park and how to get to the entrance. The trick is to go around the village and enter it from the back-side, park in the large parking lot behind the village, then walk to the castle... the entrance is via stairs in the middle of the village. We ended up getting there just as it was closing.

Dear, We are really sorry to read that you couldn't make it to visit the castle. It really makes part of the small city La Roche-en-Ardenne, that's why the only entrance is in the middle of the small city. We hope you were still ably to visit the castle! Kindly regards, Team Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne!

Dominating castle with some interesting touches
May 2019 • Friends
There is plenty of parking in this pretty little town and the castle is easy to spot, the entrance is just off the main square and next to a fountain and statue. The castle is a strange flint construction and obviously lots of work has gone into it to level the site from the craggy outcrop it is built on. There are plenty of information boards and the map you get at the entrance is excellent and includes a suggested route. There are very impressive views from the ramparts of the castle.

Very nice place, good explanations given in the brochure that you get at the entrance. We were delighted. By the way la Roche en Ardenne is a wonderful town.

Impressive!
Dec 2018 • Couples
A nice walk brings you to the little top of a hill. It's really impressive to see an almost 1000 years old castle. You'll get a good impression how they lived in those day's. Walking along the wall's you have a stunning view over La Rouche.

The must see destination.
Aug 2018 • Couples
Interesting castle. Enough to see, not too expensive or time consuming. Only 3 as there was no English explanation. 5 if you can read German, Dutch, French.
