About
Enjoy nature at its best. There is nothing like the freedom of being on horseback and traversing the hills and valleys of west of Granada. The scenery is beautiful with views of Mombacho Volcano and farmlands. Once there, we will assess your skill level and put you on the perfect horse. All of our horses are healthy and happy and love to go on tours. The ride will take you through the countryside, near the Laguna Apoyo, and then we will ride through farmlands and hillsides. We currently offer Long and Short tours any day of the week.

Beautiful horses....Great way to see villages and Laguna near Granada!
Jan 2018
We had a great 2 1/2 hour ride with Painted Pony Horse Tours. Had a special treat and rode with one of the owners! Our guide was knowledgable and shared some interesting information about the natural surroundings of Nicaragua.

Our horses were healthy, beautiful and well-trained. Lucero (my horse) was easy to ride, lead and enjoy.

Highly recommend this as a tour and experience!

Amazing ride. Healthy horses.
Dec 2017 • Couples
We recently took a ride with Painted Pony and could not have been more satisfied.

The horses were well maintained, happy and healthy.

The ride took us through towns and woodlands finally ending up on an incredible overlook of Laguna de Apoyo before heading back to the stables.

Let me say that our guide, Wilfredo, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and well informed. He got us settled on and comfortable with our individual horses. He pointed out local birds and animals, talked about the neighborhood we rode through and explained what all the different plants were as we passed them.

We couldn’t have been happier when we finally returned to the Painted Pony stables.

We will talk about this ride for years to come.

Thank you Wilfredo and Painted Pony!!!

You can not miss Apoyo Lagoon staying in Granada and the perfect way to reach the rim of this crateric lake it is with a horse from Painted Pony.

Painted Pony does not disappoint
Jul 2017 • Family
Every summer for the past nine years I have traveled to Nicaragua with a group of teens. Every summer I look for fun activities to enrich their experience and to show them the local culture. Last summer I discovered Painted Pony. Last week my group enjoyed another wonderful trail ride with Wilfredo and his helper. Even the most inexperienced riders can feel confident on horseback. The horses are very well maintained and very well behaved. I have a large group so we went in two groups. I recommend going in the morning to enjoy the birds and the peacefulness of the morning. The tour rides out through local neighborhoods and into the area surrounding the Laguna until finally coming to a rest spot high above the Laguna Apoyo. The spot offers impressive views and cool breezes. If you need transportation to Painted Pony just ask and for a small fee they will pick you up.

Well maintained animals, great family outing
Jun 2017 • Family
Our children are quite young (1 and 3), so we just visited the farm and did not do a full horse riding tour. The kids loved seeing the animals and got to sit on the horse and go around for a short ride around the stables. The owners obviously take good care of their animals and the horses look to be in much better condition than the ones you see around the country and in town.

Beautiful views

My partner and I visited the Painted Pony for a trail ride to see the views of Laguna de Apoyo. We had a great time with our guide, Wilfredo, who was so sweet and talkative on our ride. I would absolutely recommend lots of sunscreen and water if you visit the ranch during peak heat and sunlight hours like we did. The view of the Laguna was unbelievable and the ride provided us with some great entertainment and memories.

A Fun Time
Mar 2017 • Friends
We had a mixed group of complete novice riders to somewhat experienced riders. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. They lead the most nervous and inexperienced riders on a lead. I found my horse to be responsive and not your typical tourist trail horse that just follows the horse in front of it. The horses are well trained and well taken care of and well fed. We enjoyed all the baby animals at the farm and the beautiful view over the rim at Laguna Apoyo.
They have helmets and hats but it would be good to wear sunscreen and bring something to protect your eyes because you are riding west into the setting sun.
I had a great time and can't wait to go back.

Great way to see the beauty of Nicaragua!
Jan 2017 • Couples
My husband and I highly recommend a ride with Painted Pony Horse Tours. We decided one day to check them out. We couldn't find their office near Parque Central (turns out their office is no longer there and you have to call or email to book). But we took a drive out of town and found their stables using Google (just a short drive out behind the Japanese Hospital). The guide, Wilfredo, was there and we managed with our limited Spanish and his English to arrange a tour for the next afternoon. When we arrived the next day our horses were saddled and ready. We were given cowboy hats to wear (not bike helmets) and off we went. The tour takes you up a gravel road with amazing views of Granada, Mombacho Volcano, Lake Nicaragua and beyond! Towards the end of the road you come to a housing development called Vistalagos, where we were let in through the gate and rode through a large grassy area to the top edge of Laguna de Apoyo, where you get a stunning view of the Laguna. Then a short ride by the beautiful houses up there and retrace our steps back to the stables. Wilfredo was very knowledgeable about the many plants, flowers and trees along the way and what the local Nicaraguan people have used them for, such as medicinal purposes. He was also kind enough to take whatever pictures of us we wanted and let us wander around to look at the view. If we get time before we leave beautiful Nicaragua we hope to return to Painted Pony for another ride! (Just one note - there is not much shade on the ride so take along your sunscreen and some water/snacks)

Took the family out on a horse riding tour. The The tour guide was very helpful in accommodating my youngest child. The trek itself was great with some great views of laguna de apoyo. It was a nice afternoon and money well spent.
