It's interesting reading other reviews that say this snorkeling was much better before, that the local marine life is being devastated by some input that they couldn't be clear on, maybe pollution or trash or maybe something else. After visiting different places on the mainland and main islands (Samui and Phuket, in addition to Hua Hin, Krabi, and others) it was nice to take a tour of small local islands from Koh Chang and see this island and places with any fish and coral. That's the thing though; if it's not as much of a thriving underwater ecosystem as it had been 5 years ago then something is kind of wrong.

Since I've only seen it once I have to go on that; it was nothing like when we lived in Hawaii but you could actually snorkel here, there were fish and coral. The sand on the beach was finer and cleaner than I've seen anywhere else in Thailand, maybe only equivalent in some places in Koh Chang. It's not as if I've seen any of the other smaller islands though, to be clear; we've had very young kids for awhile and they're only now able to swim well enough to do this kind of tour, although they weren't with us on this particular trip.

It's getting to be a tangent but I've read that the Great Barrier reef in Australia is suffering from a massive coral die-off due to a shift in water temperature; an ecosystem disruption could be caused by something like that. If that's it there would really be no way to fix it. It seems likely that some plastic bottles around wouldn't necessarily kill off all the fish and that something else like that might be a cause, but of course I don't know.

We came to Ko Wai three years ago and it was magic. We wanted to return this year and it was a big disappointment.

The first problem of the island is garbage. The 4 or 5 bungalows resorts dont burn or take away garbage, they just pile it away next to the hotel, so huge mounts of garbage just sit and rot there. Then there is garbage on the beaches, brought from the sea. When I arrived I first started to gather plastic bags and other refuse on the beach, it took me 2 hours to first clean the beach!

Then the hotels. We came at the end of april and you dont have much choice. Only the Pakarang resort can be reserved on booking. Else if you phone, you can stay at Grandma's huts of the Paradise resort (they are left and right of the Pakarang, you need to walk a small paths along the beach, that would not be too easy with luggage though).

Boats will stop at any resort on demand, and you can reserve a speedboat to pick you up at the end of your stay. At the end of April, there was just one per day, no choice of hours.

We stayed at the Pararang resort which was almost empty and service was slow, showing no interest. Food was not good and there was almost nothing to eat. A small coke was 30 baht. basic fried rice was 80 baht and dishes 90-300 baht.
the beautiful pier with the characteristic pavillon had been destroyed by a storm a few months before and only a small part, near the beach, had been recently rebuilt. You could see pieces of wood and concrete sunk at the bottom of the sand when swimming.

But the most terrible thing was the snorkeling. Three years ago we had been enchanted by the view of the many little fish which came swimming just next to us, there was such a variety in colors, as well as beautiful corals.
But now (April 2018), most of the fish were gone. There was one species left (black and white striped), and very very few of the orange, blue, green and other species we had admired three years ago.

I dont know whether it is the pollution, the plastic, the many boats carrying dozens of tourists coming every day to snorkle on that beach.

We were extremely disappointed and had the impression that a little paradise on earth had been destroyed virtually in front of our eyes within a couple years.

It is really urgent to do something to save this island.

For a tour package, this is the last stop before returning to Koh Chang. Good for swimming but the coral is not so beautiful. Tourist can enjoy swimming and relax.

Being in Koh Chang third time I decided to visit Ko Wai wich I visited 5 years ago. I bought a tour. On the eve there was a strong wind from the mountains on Koh Chang and I could not imagine what will be in Koh Wai due to those strong wind. All the beaches were covered by garbage

We stayed for 2 nights at Koh Wai Beach resort. Lovely little cove with a private beach and you can only arrive by boat and no day trippers- paradise.
The rocky area made for great snorkelling with some colourful fish. Our little hut had air conditioning and hot water too. Perfect little get away.

The only thing that ruined it for us was the amount of trash being swept into the cove. We spent 10 minutes gathering trash and more whilst we were snorkelling. Plastic bags, plastic bottles, glass bottles, food packets, cups, moisturiser containers, fishing net- you name it, it was there.

So many fish, whales, turtles die because of humans careless acts. We spend all this money coming to amazing islands to snorkel and see the beautiful sea life but we are killing them! If everyone picked up rubbish when they saw it then maybe things would change. Until then...

Koh Wai is a lovely little island close to the southern end of Koh Chang.
Catch a ferry from Bang Bao and you can either day trip of stay a few days.
If staying be aware that this is a quiet place with little nightlife.
Great place to get away and great for swimming and snorkelling.

Awesome place to spend a couple of nights. The cleanest water we have seen around the area. There's a small basic but cheap place to stay with a sea view.
