- FuntravellerNY6 contributionsA beautiful serene placeThere are two caves there, both close by - Vashisht Gufa and Arundati Gufa. People go there to medidate. It's completely dark in the cave with only an oil lamp. Very calm and peaceful. You have to go down a slightly steep ramp to reach there. We spent about ten minutes in each cave and then descended down to a beautiful rocky beach. We sat about one hour with our feet in the water. Must visit if you want a calm place away from the crowdsVisited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 24, 2023

Wonderful 45 minutes of meditation inside the cave with few strangers but what lovely vibes and exhilarating experience! Right on the river bank and a serene location!Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 2, 2023

Imagine witnessing the place where Guru of Lord Rama, Seer Vashistha meditated along with his wife.
Vashistha Gufa is a must visit place if you are interested in Indian mythology. The cave is well preserved and well maintained. Please dont forget to sit there and meditate and feel the aura of the place.
Tip: You will have to descent down and climb back from main road so wear good shoes although the both descend and ascend is comfortable. River Ganges is further 100-150 meters from cave and the way is filled with sand and rocks but it is enjoyable. You will get spectacular views from Gufa and upon reaching river, you can enjoy bathing as well. Please remember there are no changing rooms as it is pure pristine natural bank of river.
Go and witness a piece of ancient history

It is a meditative den, small, dark, and not really something I would want to see. One can go if they like caves and den. But there is a quiet beach, 10 mins walk from there. That is an amazing place to camp, click pictures, and enjoy silence.

Some 20 minutes drive from Laxman Jhula, better to go by your own car. Place is best suited for meditation.

This ancient cave was where Sage Vashishta meditated in the millennia gone by ! It is well preserved even now and one can meditate quietly inside.
It is about 25 km from Rishikesh on the Badrinath road. We drove mostly along the River Ganga and reached the entrance of Swami Puroshottamanand Ashram. For the ashram and Vashishta cave (Gufa or Guha) there were steps which took us down, almost to the river side. A few people were there but fortunately there was no crowd, and we could meditate inside the cave in peace.
Swami Chaitanyanand who is the Head of the ashram now, told us about the difficulties they had last year when the flood waters damaged many of the roads, especially the Kedarnath road. The ashram and Gufa were covered with sand several feet high, when the flood waters receded, and a huge expense was incurred to remove the sand and debris, rebuild and repaint the affected buildings. Their efforts have paid off and now the ashram and cave are again looking good, in this scenic location by the Ganga River bank.
A historic place worth visiting.

Entrance of Gufa is dark but visible as you move inside, it gets darker and visibility drops. There is a shivling inside. Cave is closed for 2 hours between 1 to 3 pm. People sit inside the Gufa for some time and do meditation.
i spoke about my experience inside the cave with few tourists and we all shared common experience and that was high energy. I felt like floating and it gave me a feeling of emptiness. All the thoughts in my mind vanished for few minutes.
I was lucky that there were some sadhus who had come during that time and they were chanting om namo shivay during that time. It was such a great feeling. i found myself blessed.
If you have children with you less than 18 years, I would suggest you not to explore this place.
Apart from Gufa there is Ganges passing by, travelers sit there and enjoy the flow of the river too.
Will share a tip - if you are travelling to Vashishtha Gufa, you can extend go down further 5 pm and visit Mala Kunti. It is a bridge similar to Laxman Jhula. You will experience a out of world view of bridge and road from Mala Kunti.
I have spent 5 days in Rishikesh and have put all my experiences in form of a video on my YouTube channel - visa2explore. This can help viewers and travellers to learn more about places to visit in Rishikesh.

The calm gufa is the ideal spot to meditate. It opens at 7 in the morning and is closed in the afternoon from12 to 4. A series of steps lead to the gufa. U have to park your vehicle on the main highway itself.

The real city is rishikesh way past both bridges by the bus stop. Near railway road and many shops . this is the time where the locals live. They also work in this area. But the ram jhula tapovan laxman Jhula areas are not near this railway road area. So the cave is out of town on way out of town heading away up .or heading into town before you get to tapovan. Depends which direction.

The town of Rishikesh is near the bus stop at railway road. This is near the marketplace and the area where the locals live. The Vashistha Cave is headed up river past this area, past the Ram Jhlua Bridge, past Laxman Jhula. So you head out of town near Tapovan. Tapovan and Laxman Jhula are more of the Yoga and tourist area. It is not the Area of Main Rishikesh town.

Is it down the road and one has to go down and climb up again and is it for elderly people easily reachable?

For Gufa, climbing down and way up is not for elderly. And there is no other way. Best to avoid it for elderly and persons with walking/climbing problems.
Banks of Ganga requires further walking down,

Best way is to take a taxi. We actually hired a full day car for haridwar and attractions in Rishikesh.

I read some where that there is swami ji there, thought to ask you? is there someone at Vashisht Gufa you can interact with and is always present.
Reason for asking is that i am travelling there on sunday - 9th april 2017. i want to make a small video clip for my channel on Youtube and cover this place.
Since you have traveled to this place, i thought to ask you
thanks in advance

Thanks Sundar S & Akr - I got to meet Swami ji - video not allowed. Had a chance to be in the Gufa for half an hour in silence and another half an hour when people were chanting om namo shivai....
Life time experience of silence. There is tremendous energy there in the Gufa, lot of peace observed.
For readers of this review - Gufa is closed for 2 hours in afternoon 1 to 3 pm. If planning visit - keep that in mind..
thanks
