I have been going here for over 20 years and taking many groups there. The temple has not been kept up and is in total repair. The custodians of the temple have a lot of money and should put more love and financial backing towards repairs. Not on my must do list anymore.

Visited this temple recently with some foreigner friends. Since long time many foreigners are coming here to enjoy mountain views and do yoga / meditation at morning. Now they have put board at entrance in hindi that yoga is not allowed near the temple. That's ok if it is disturbing other people. There was some people inside the temple so we decided to visit it later. I asked my friends to not to do yoga but just sit silently in one corner behind the temple and meditate for 5-10 minutes if they want. Now the one of the pundit comes to me and said it will cost 100 per person for yoga. I said to him we are not doing yoga but just doing meditation silently for just 5-10 minutes and we will go. We are sitting in corner behind the temple so it will not disturb others. He said you need to pay 100 per person. I said ok we don't want to pay this money because it is not logical. Later we visited the temple now the chief pundit was inside the main temple doing pooja. When i offered him plate for pooja he asked me if this is the same group doing yoga. I said we were not doing yoga but just sitting for 5-10 minutes silently in corner doing meditation. He said that you need to pay money for that also. I said yoga i understand but sitting in silent meditation for 5-10 minute (that too in open space corner behind temple) 100 rs per person charge is not reasonable. He said don't come here if you don't want to pay money for meditation yoga. This whole conversation was inside the temple while he was offering prayers.
It is certainly not the behavior i expected from chief priest. I am not foreigner and i know getting some donations from devotees is their main income but charging 100 per person for 10 minute meditation is not the right way to earn money. If the pundit is taking meditation class and teach people that ok if he charge such money or even 300 per person for that but not if he is not giving any class and people are just doing themselves.
They are trying to take advantage of foreigners and want to earn money in wrong way. I am proud hindu and i admire the beauty of our religion but when i see old and well known temple like this under control of such people it certainly hurts a lot. Will try to avoid future visits if possible. Do not pay money for yoga meditation here as it is not logical at all.

Last week i visited this place for sunrise. I read many many articles, saw videos and review as well but surprisingly could not find the needed information at one place.
Now i have first hand information. I am taking this opportunity to write a detailed review of this place - kind of one stop answer for everything related to Kunjapuri temple at Rishikesh.
Here I go:
Kunjapuri temple is 8 kms from Narendra Nagar, So it's about 27 kms from Rishikesh. It takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach this place from Rishikesh at average driving speed. It's hill area, do not try driving fast.
No public transport is available in morning, You can hire a scooter, bike from Rishikesh if you do not have a car.
If you are someone like me who stayed in Haridwar, i started at 3.45 am and it took me 2 hours to reach the spot. I reached at 5.45 am.. sunrise happened at 5.50 am.
Haridwar to Rishikesh - 27 kms and Rishikesh to Kunjapuri another 27.
Your car goes upto Kunjapuri, there are 308 stairs that you need to climb to reach the temple. I was told that it will take atleast 30 minutes to climb these stairs. Trust me it does not take more than 5 to 7 minutes, stairs are low height steps.
If you have reached this place so early, that only shows your energy level.
You will see more foreigners there than Indians, Only reason i think of that happening is that Foreigners do lot of research about city before travelling. any ways..... Sun rise view at this place is so amazing, so good that i wanted to be there again the next day.
Purpose of my going there was for making video for my YouTube channel on food and travel - visa2explore.
I was lucky that it was sunday, a guide was chanting hare krishna hare rama there for good half an hour and it was so nice to hear that at such a height, pleasing view.
After the sun rise, i visited the Kunjapuri temple, which is one out of 52 peeths of Rishikesh, that has a history too- you can read about it in wikipedia.
For me it is a must visit place, you are going to have magnificient view of Himalyas form this location.
Don't forget to have Maggi at a shop which is in between the stairs, that guys puts some masala in the maggi which gives it awesome taste.
Now i know you will start looking for some videos to see how this place looks, i have it for you and for others - have published one on my YouTube - name - Rishikesh - places to visit.... channel name - visa2explore. Have covered kunjapuri as part of that.

If you go to Rishikesh, you should catch a glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Kunjapuri Devi is the closest place to see them. It's only an hours drive and a nice walk up to the top.

Visited Kunjapuri Temple alongwith my wife and one year daughter in last week of April 2018.
Kunjapuri Temple, one of the Shaktipeeths in Garhwal Himalayas, a must visit sacred place near Rishikesh, offers beautiful sunrise view.
Located at an altitude of 1600 mts, It is around an hour; 28 kms, upward journey from Laxmanjhula. Downward journey consumes around 40-45 minutes.
Best way to visit there is by hiring a cab. One should leave Laxmanjhula by 4 - 4:15 am to enjoy the sunrise. The cab fare may range around INR 1300-1500 to and fro journey. The cab can go to the temple gate. 1-1.5 hrs is required inside.
One needs to cover around 320 steps [180+140] to reach the entrance gate which have two lions engraved. There are platforms, where one can rest in between.
We were welcomed by a breathtaking view, beautiful valley, mountains and a troop of monkeys; one should take care of belongings. It also has a colourful Shiv Murti. Morning Aarti was beautiful, a good experience. A Child was playing a drum. The Maggi and tea of the shop at the top is gud and recommended.
In nutshell, a must visit place near Rishikesh.

There are three Shakti peeths in the adjacent region of Rishikesh. Surkanda devi, Kunjapuri and Chandrabadni. Kunjapuri is hardly thirty kilometers from Rishikesh, onway to Gangotri. From the alighting point there are nearly hundred stairs to be climbed to get to the temple. But the stunning view from the temple and the spiritual ambiance is rewarding. For the believers the importance of the place is due to the tongue of Sati Parvati having fallen at this hill after Lord Shiva decimated her body.

It's a hike, literally (300+stairs on a steep incline) to get here.
The views are great but as always, the temple workers are always asking for a donation. In India, you will find that this can get VERY aggressive. Feel free to say no.

Kunjapuri Devi Temple is one of the 52 shakti peeth and one of the thirteen Shakti Peethas in Shivalik Range.
Located on a hilltop the best time to visit would be aug -october i assume since in January (our last trip here) we were pretty cold.
The temple lends a panoramic sight of the Himalayan peaks to the North and Rishikesh, Haridwar and the Doon valley to the South.
It's clean and simple. So if you want the buzz of hindu culture, you might want to visit during the Navratras. Its amazing to watch the rituals.

i have visited there many times it's only 25-30 km. from rishikesh main market . from there u can the best sunrise and rishikesh city view and the temple is also very nice and historical. must visit there once during your stay at rishikesh ... jai mata di

Although it took us 2 hours of driving up on a very narrow winding road that was somewhat dangerous, it was totally worth getting up there!! Up above the Himalayas mountains sits this fascinating temple that was supposedly important to women. I loved the story & the scenery is breathtaking! Prepare to hike up 350 stairs up but once you are up, it's magical! Namaste

Car or any bus going to chamba tehri or uttarkashi but they will drop you on highway. From there you will have to hitch or hike. ....almost 5 km people used to go on bike but road under construction
