Picturesque place and reminds me of Varanasi on a smaller scale. The ghat was very clean and well kept . The backdrop framed by the Ahilya fort and the Shiva temple is beautiful and if you take a boat ride during sundown it is magical.

The Maheshwar fort and Ghat area contains
*Part of the fort (open to public)
*Rewa : unit cum shop selling Maheshwari sarees and fabric
*Ghats: Maa Narmada 's ghats
*Temples
You can rent a boat at the ghats and see the temple in the middle of Maa Narmada.
All are very beautiful. Try to visit early in the morning when less people are there.
All a photographers delight.
Sunset time is also a good time to visit but it will be crowded

The Ahilya ghat was spectacular. We walked on it at sunrise and it was serene and peaceful. Besides being a great start to our day, it was like stepping into history and when learning the story of Maheshwar and Ahilya Devi Holkar - truly inspirational

This is one of the cleaner ghats that i have visited and should be one of your top places to visit while you are in Maheshwar. You can spend few hours here admiring the beauty of this place and also understand the history. There is also a local handloom centre close to the ghat for you to buy hand woven blankets, clothes etc. Take a boat ride on the river Narmada to see the ghats also the natural beauty around.
The boat takes you to the bank of the river where you can find peace alongside nature.
Overall a peaceful and divine experience!

Narmada ghat or Ahilya ghat was the best part of my visit to Indore , Ujjain, Onkareshwar and Maheshwar. Please spent an evening here. Ghat is clean and peaceful. You can enjoy feeding fishes in the river, small Aarti at 7-8 pm by locals.. very peaceful. You can do deep daan in river.. the view of fort is amazing with some beautiful lighting. We went in the morning also, took bath in holy Narmada. You will get an spiritual feeling and as everywhere people are (mostly locals) are taking bath and doing pooja to Shiva (many small shiv ling has on ghat). I loved strolling on the ghat..
My first plan was to not visit Maheshwar but on last day I decided to go and stay there.. I was very happy about my decision.
Shashtra dhara is another beautiful place near Maheshwar.

The Ghats are beautiful but hygiene and cleanlinesses is found wanting. There is foul smell of urine around the corners. There are number of animals roaming the ghats with no control from the authorities. People are throwing muck all around. Best time is Nov to Feb.

Reminding me of a mini Varanasi this place is a beauty around sunset. There is a beautiful shiva temple on the banks and you can take boat rides around sunset. Amazing setting to just walk around, buy local sarees and spend an interesting quiet evening.

We found this place as the best place in our entire visit of Ujjain local, Omkareshwar, Indore and Maheshwar. I bow down and salute to Rani Ahilyabai for making such an enchanting structure on the bank of Narmada. Just loved this place.
I suggest all to stay here and sit on the ghat at night during evening aarti time if possible.

Maheshwar
The riverside town.
Khargone, Madhya Pradesh
When I left home for #Indore I planned to spend a night at Omkareshwar. When I reached #Omkareshwar I just did not feel the vibe. The religious tourism was overwhelming. I decided to see Maheshwar and spend some peaceful time here instead. I am happy I did.
Just few hours from Indore, #Maheshwar has a vibe of its own. A beautiful ghaat, tons of Maheshwari handloom shops, a fort and some history. A peaceful riverside town. Where I had to walk blocks to find decent food but a step in any direction took me to a handloom shop. The fort is best place to stay if you are here for a short time.
Most beautiful experience is to just go sit at the Ghaat from sunset to midnight, just take a stroll and feed those fishes. This is what locals do. They catchup after dinner looking at beautiful #Narmada with the stunning view of chattris and fort. Unlike other religious places there is visibly no ‘religious’ trash on the ghaat. No annoying pandits chasing you for rituals and absolutely no noisy chaos. Cleanliness will impress you.
While you should visit the Holkar Fort and the stunning Ahileshwar temple, the holkar museum too is a beautiful place to imbibe the history of Maheshwar. You can cover it all by feet. However, the true spirit of Maheshwar lies in its streets and beautiful architecture. As you walk around the beautiful town notice the intricate work done on old buildings and the balconies which standout even today.
If you like quiet peaceful places, with less commercialisation, little history and lots of culture.. you would love Maheshwar.
Tips for solo traveller:
✅ A bus from Indore Station will get you here in 2 Hours and 70 Rs. The 15 minutes walk from Bus Station to fort is easy and interesting - you will pass many handloom workshops
✅ Online rooms were pricey but when I randomly walked in Hotel Raj Palace - I got a stellar deal with a temple view :) - please call and negotiate
✅ Go on weekday for less crowd and cheaper room
✅ You should eat at Banke Bihari Bhojnalaya for the traditional thali priced at 50 Rs. unless it is a special occasion
✅ Laboos cafe is overrated and can be skipped or maybe go have chai to check it out. Was unable to understand the hype.
✅ A govt authorised bhang shop is available below the fort for those interested
✅ Maheshwar has been weaving sarees since 5th century - even the backpacker me ended up buying gifts for my Mom. Keep budget and space in your backpack for the super light and vibrant Maheshwari Sarees. Early Morning shopping assures best bargaining deals :)

This place and the Queens fort are basically the same structure. The ghats are probably the 1st place we have visited in India where we thought if we had had time it would have been just lovely to sit and relax. When we were there it was busy but not Indian chaos busy. We wandered the whole river front and met lots of incredibly friendly locals. Beautiful to watch sunset too.
One word of caution in monsoon the ghats can be closed due to high river levels. There were boat rides available but we did not take.
See my others reviews of Mandu & Omkareshwar, our only regret was not having enough time to explore Maheshwar. Linking the 3 together makes for a lovely 2/3 days as a tourist.
Lovely town just to wander safety as tourists. Highly recommend this town.
