If you consider yourself a sophisticated wine connoisseur (I sort of do), you should try Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery. I didn't just find this 'fun', but hilariously fun. Some of the wineries in Virginia, and of course elsewhere, are pretentious but without the wines to back it up. This isn't.
It's very low key and makes no bones about being a different type of winery. It has berry-based wines, and it has honey-based meads. It unabashedly has fun with both, including having goats and donkeys on site that patrons can interact with if they want. What makes it all work, as opposed to being just a fun joke, is that their wines and meads are actually extremely well done. The quality behind what they're having fun with will be evident, even though what you're drinking may be new to you. Go have fun!

Very nice spot and friendly helpful service. We enjoyed several of the wines and meads. I recommend bringing a jacket as the day we were there was very breezy and a little chilly. They also have a variety of snacks to enjoy with the wine/mead.

We researched at least 5 other wineries, but all of the reviews led us HERE.
As we exited our cars and strolled up to the covered patio / store area we were greeted by the cutest, smallest, friendliest goats. I knew then, this would be a different type of experience for my family and I.
They offer a small food menu and mini wine samples - before one commits to a larger flight of them. We tasted, toasted, and told stories that helped make the togetherness of this place great!
Many from the waitstaff visited our table to check in on us, provide some banter and overall lent to the friendly vibe.
At a neighboring table, was a bridal party of about 8 and they were indeed having a ball.
Our party of about 6, were doing so too. HillTop allowed us to bring in some snacks and is also a pet-friendly space. We took a short stroll alongside the winery which was relaxing.
If in the region again, we would return.

Different kind of winery. Located on the Nelson 151 craft beverage trail. The focus here is Mead wine, sweet fruity wine with many different varieties.
Trey the $5 Tasting Flight where you get to try all eight varieties…very interesting and different! See the attached pictures for details on the wonderful varieties.
The seating area is both inside and on a deck that has some covering. You are allowed to bring your own food ( cheeses, crackers, etc) or buy them there.
For kids there at goats to pet and feed.

Hill Top Berry Farm was one of the best experiences of our Charlottesville long weekend trip. We (two couples) prefer sweet, fruity wines, which are difficult to find in the area. Hill Top has a nice variety of sweet wines (dry ones also). We brought a picnic lunch and sat out on the lovely patio. We did a tasting of pre-chosen wines and meads, and a flight of four of our own choosing. We had actually never tasted mead before, so it made the experience even more fun. It was almost impossible to decide which we liked best out of the 12 different flavors we tried. I know that the Sweet Cherry, Sweet Vixen, Sweet Melon were unanimous wine favorites and the Matador mead was our favorite mead. We enjoyed the view, and we especially enjoyed feeding and watching the goats. This is a very relaxing, low key winery. We truly enjoyed our visit here, and hope to visit in the future.

This was the best place slightly off the beaten path! I would highly recommend visiting and having either a tasting, drink, or both here. We participated in the tasting which is shown in the picture. 10 tastings for $5 and all of them were fantastic. This was by far my favorite stop of the whole trip on our self guided tour!

We had a fabulous time here. We arrived just as the weather did, and were able to take shelter under their enormous covered patio. We tried almost everything - tastings and flights. The mead was really excellent, as was the fruit wine. Highly recommend the straight up traditional honey mead!

2nd time back; first review. Stopped here b/c my wife loves their wine and I love their mead. Great afternoon watching the day go by, listening to the goats, and drinking great wine and mead. Low key; amazingly attentive service.

You have to try this place. $5 for a 8x flight. Tastes that are completely unique. In our group of 4: we got each a different "this is the best taste ever". If you are in the area, drop by and try this place. In a region of big budget breweries and vineyards, this is the place to go to. Very unique. Low key. very froendly. Get there and enjoy before it becomes too popular. If you don't like the brews, play with the goats right there. Very special place.

Visited with a friend for the first time. It was off the beaten path but we’ll with the time to get there. We shared a carafe flight and loved all that we tried; enough to take a bottle of each home.
We enjoyed the fresh air sitting out on the covered porch area. We were able to enjoy our samplings and chat. Would definitely stop here again if I’m anywhere close to the area.

Do you have fruit available or just wine?
Written June 16, 2015
Typically, we have wine and mead but no fruit for sale. For one month in the summer, we let you pick Blackberries. Our blackberry season this year is July 11-Auust 9. For those days our hours are 9am to 5pm. Our usual hours for wines and meads tasting is daily 11am to 5pm.
Thank you,

Absolutely! We have a covered pavilion with picnic tables just outside the tasting room. The bluebirds are here and everything is green and beautiful. You can picnic rain or shine!
