We went to Mt Vernon on the way out of DC - headed home. The place is absolutely fascinating. There is a remarkable amount of history there. I'm not sure I fully appreciated it when we were there. I'm reading "The Real George Washington" now and vividly remember so many of the features about Mt. Vernon. This should be a... More

There is so much to do here. It feels like you are stepping back in time when you come. The staff is nice and you can really tell what it was like to live in the Washington household.

This can't be missed if you are in the DC area. The house, grounds and outbuildings are so beautiful and well kept. The guides are very helpful and interesting. The education centre is one of the best "museums" I've seen at historical sites like this. The movie about the revolutionary war is really educational and entertaining with all of the... More

If in the Washington DC area, this is a great day trip and well worth the visit. The visitor centre is amazing, as are the tours of the Washington plantation and home. The view from the back porch is unforgettable. It is definitely a day trip though - don't try to see it in a few hours. We took the... More

We chose a beautiful late winter day to travel the 15 miles out of town to Virginia. We are so glad we did, the house was striking for sure but what really stood out for us was how wonderfully positioned the estate is at the bend of the Potomac. The view from the back porch is greatly unspoiled and you... More

Take a step back in time to when George Washington was president and learn about his childhood, see the home he lived in with his wife and children and learn about the grounds of Mount Vernon. The gardens are beautiful. Most of the exhibit is outside so dress comfortably.

What an incredible experience. The guides were well trained and knowledgeable. It was refreshing to be able to touch and feel items at a historical location. Very few areas were off limits. I advise that you get there early and plan a day of it. There is a lot of walking involved up and down hills. If it has been... More

Thank you for spending your day at George Washington's Mount Vernon. The golf carts are reserved for staff use only, but all areas on the estate other than the second floor the mansion are wheelchair accessible. Standard, non-motorized wheelchairs and wheeled walkers are available free of charge inside the Ford Orientation Center on a first-come, first-served basis. More

My fiance and I dropped by here last month because my fiance has never visited before. We picked a really bad day to go though, because it was very cold and rainy (an icy kind of rain). Our visit was still nice, however. This was actually my second visit (last visit: December 2011) and the mansion and grounds were still... More

Thank you for 'braving the elements' to visit George Washington's Mount Vernon. I'm sorry that you found admission to be costly - this money is used for the ongoing preservation and restoration of the estate. Photography is not permitted inside the mansion in order to not disrupt the flow of visitors on their tour. More

We carried 2 busses of high school band members there and were not disappointed. I have been here before and am amazed at the place. The grounds are kept immaculate and the organization should be proud of the way they have preserved our first President's home. A truly great place to visit if anywhere close!

Mt. Vernon was and is a working farm, full of the General's innovations and inventions. The main house has supporting buildings including a kitchen, smokehouse, a pint mixing house, greenhouse and stables. Also there is an octagonal barn that was used for wheat threshing by running horses over the stalks of grain where the wheat berries fell to the floor... More
