As the oldest commercial vineyard and winery at Smith Mountain Lake, a visit to Hickory Hill Vineyards is a must. The Furrows first planted vines in 1984 and after years of vineyard experience, they opened the winery 2001. With that first commercial vintage, Hickory Hill wines began earning medals of excellence in international wine competitions with over 50 to date. A visit to Hickory Hill can include a tasting of their popular "Lake series" of blended wines made in a lighter, more fruit forward style. For those preferring more traditional, drier wines, you will not want to miss the vintage, estate grown, award winning Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. A local award winning Cabernet Franc round out the wine list. In 2005 The Furrows started the summer music series Sunset Saturday. This music series features local singer/songwriters many Saturday evenings from May to September.

We had a wonderful experience today while tasting some of the finest wines. We arrived about an hour before closing on the first Saturday after the wineries winter break. For us, a great day to reopen. We were looking for a day with no time frame and that is exactly what our day was like. Our tasting ran much later... More

Visited for a wine tasting. $5 per person. No tour with f the winery or grounds, no snacks available. Cute little gift store. Needs some bar stools. Too long to stand without a sitting option. Very friendly staff, (daughter of the owner was our server). Seemed very knowledgeable about their wine selection and that was appreciated.

First time visitor to Hickory Hill. The farmhouse that serves as the tasting room has been nicely preserved. The red blends are very good. The unoaked Chardonnay is just ok. Fun night of wine tasting and music .took our picnic dinner and enjoyed the farm even though it was a little rainy.

This small vineyard/winery operation is well off the beaten track of Virginia wine country, but just a couple of miles from my cousin's house. Though she, my husband and I are all enthusiastic wine consumers, we'd never visited until this week. What a pleasant surprise! For just $5.00 we were able to taste-test a wide variety of reds and whites... More

It was almost closing time, but the woman, whose family owns the vineyard, didn't seem to notice as she devoted her time to us like time was never an issue. She was very fun and extremely knowledgeable. She answered all of our questions about the wine and about vineyards in general. This is an excellent winery in an area with... More

This vineyard has consistently improved over the last 12 years. They have received National awards for their wines. They offer Sunset Saturday concerts from late May thru Sept, featuring local artists. Participants can bring a picnic dinner. Wine can be purchased on-site. A small fee is charged for Sunset Saturday concerts which includes a wine glass.

We popped in at noon on Saturday and were the first customers of the day. The lady serving us was one of the owners and was extremely knowledgable about wines. She told us all about the wines and helped us with plans for things to do in the area. We ended up purchasing 6 bottles to take with us. If... More

I've done my share of wine tasting at small vineyards and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of both the service during our wine tasting and the quality of their wines. Our server kept our group of seven entertained with his knowledge of the wine industry, grapes and his wines. His winery has done well... More
