Don’t waste your time
Jul 2020
we visited the winery today, we spoke to the owner and he told us we would not be allowed to visit as he was only serving wine club members. There was no notice or information posted advising such.We felt his manner was rude and condescending. In fact, when we asked about tasting or purchasing a glass of wine, we were told there wasn’t open to us.
Good luck as we will not be back due to the delusions of competency exhibited.

The Tannat just gets better each visit

Have tasted here multiple times. Thought the 2012 was great, but have come to relish the 2013 even more.

You should probably just avoid this place
Feb 2020
The wine is ok, nothing to get excited about, but most certainly WAY overpriced. You can find equal to or better not far from this place at less than half the price. Just give it a miss.

But worst of all is just how rude and obnoxious the owner is. As a person with a tax exemption, I asked the staff to apply that exemption to my intended purchase, only to be told by the staff it wasn't possible (wrong). Given I intended to make a purchase of nearly $200 for two bottles of what was overpriced anyway, I elected not to make the purchase, which of course prompted the staff to double check with the owner. What followed was a tirade of abuse, demanding that I should have given them weeks advance notice, and how this was a retail purchase anyway, so how could I expect to be tax exempt. Well Mr Obnoxious, every POS software (including yours) has a simple button to select to apply a tax exemption. Even the retailer I bought my christmas tree from in a shopping centre carpark was able to apply the exemption. The entitlement to the exemption applies to every purchase, wholesale, retail any other. Its the law!

Perhaps you should have a clue, understand your customers, (located close to the largest diplomatic residence on earth), and treat your customers with some respect. Your wine average. Your service is well below average!

My mother and I visited on a rainy afternoon, but the views were stunning! The wine was delicious , but the best part was Joanne.. our wine expert! She really knows her stuff AND her personality is magnificent! I will be back in September and can’t wait to visit with her again! ... and drink more yummy wine! Xoxo

Confirmed Reservation to Private Event
Jul 2019 • Couples
We been customers of this winery in the past and have recommended it to friends as a great place to taste and purchase quality wines. Recently, however, we had directly received an invitation to attend an event there. We responded and received a confirmation that we had spots reserved for us at the event. When we visited the winery on the day before, we spoke to the owner and he told us we would not be allowed to attend. We felt his manner was rude and condescending. In fact, when we asked about tasting or purchasing a glass of wine, we were told there wasn’t any open because it was too close the end of the day. This occurred even though it was well before the 4:50 deadline for tastings clearly stated on the winery website. Again, we felt the interaction was rude.
We attempted to contact the winery and the owner after this happened to explain our reaction to the way we were treated. We have never received any type of response to those contacts.
Use caution when considering making a reservation to events here. Apparently even a confirmation doesn’t matter. We had read other reviews mentioning rude treatment but never experienced it ourselves before this visit.
Since we never had the opportunity to have a sip of the current wines on offer, we can no longer recommend it or a visit to this winery.

Gorgeous Winery, Good wines
May 2018 • Friends
Let's start with first impressions. This place is gorgeous! From the landscape to the building, it's beautiful. Inside and out, I love the structure, the decor, and the whole feel of the place. It's odd to recommend that you go to the bathroom while you're there, but if you do, the wall includes a whole mural of what the winery used to look like and how it has been updated without losing the feel that makes is so nice to begin with. They offer 2 different tastings, in 2 different rooms. We did the classic, which included 4 wines. I would have liked to do the bold reds in the other room as well, but honestly, those wines were pretty expensive and I really didn't want to love any of the wines at those prices.
The owner was around and chatting with everyone. He was really friendly. The lady who did our tasting was also very friendly and so casually talkative - not like tastings where the information they provide is clearly all rehearsed. The wines were very good and so was the wine toast that they make there and sell. We had a great time and would certainly go back again.

Fabulous wines in a beautiful winery
May 2018 • Couples
We were looking for a nice place in the Delaplane area to enjoy a private wine tasting on our 5th Anniversary and I found Chateau O'Brien while googling. The tasting was $35/person and included the wine tasting and meat and cheese board/pairings. For the price it sounded good, but once we arrived we were impressed by the cute building and the beautiful surroundings, and then the wines were fantastic. Howard O'Brien conducted the tasting with us and was very personable and chatted with us the entire time, it felt like we were hanging with a friend. Each wine got better and better, with the Limited Reserve Tannat blowing our socks off. We even tried the Apple Rose, which is completely outside of our taste preferences, and it was so delicious we bought a bottle for us and a bottle for a gift! I am already hoping to come back again sometime soon and enjoy the beautiful outdoor patio and hang out with some wine. I highly recommend the private tasting, the cheeses are specially imported from Ireland and are phenomenal. We did a mostly red wine tasting as we are not white wine drinkers, and we were impressed!

Paying to Work
Apr 2018 • Couples
Howard had an interesting business model - having customers pay to work bottling (in all its stages) his Tannat Rose. I did have fun, I did get a bottle to take home, and I do think it is going to be a killer wine: deep, dark, and rich!
Gorgeous copper accented and heated tasting pavillion with a killer view.

The best reds in Virginia!
Aug 2017 • Friends
Red wine is not done particularly well in Virginia but Chateau O'Brien is the exception, particularly for their high end wines. I also love their Apple Wine (white).
