Above and Beyond
Mar 2021 • Couples
If one the thing could describe our experience with Jean and the trail barn it would be “above and beyond.” A few months ago I called and asked if it was crazy to try to work a proposal into a private ride. Jean picked this up and ran with it and helped me create a day we’ll never forget. She went out and picked up flowers, set up the spot where I would propose, and played it cool the whole time so my fiancée had no idea what was coming. Then she even got the whole thing on video. Not only that, but as someone who has bad experiences with horses, Jean put me at ease and we had a great ride. Even now as I write this a day later, I’m sitting at a restaurant she recommended because again, she goes above and beyond.

A very special ride
Nov 2020
I'm a beginner and have done lots of trail rides, but this is the first time i felt out in the wilderness. Jean, the manager took care of getting us ready, and Lisa, our guide was friendly and fun and gave us pointers on posting. Having the private ride was well worth the money.

Great Trail Ride Experience
May 2019 • Family
We had a novice and a first-timer and both were accommodated well. Great wranglers! Wonderful, docile and appropriately matched horses. Great experience.

Wonderful Private Ride Experience -- Beautiful, Relaxing, Fun Ride!
May 2019 • Couples
My wife and I had a private trail ride with Jean recently -- it was great. Jean was great to coordinate with beforehand and did an amazing job making us feel comfortable (we are not experienced horseback riders). We had a wonderful 2 hour ride through some beautiful trails on Marriott's 4200 acre property -- our horses were very well-behaved, and we got to enjoy crossing some shallow creeks and Jean even let us do a few short trots, which was fun. It was a great experience, enjoying the beautiful property and chatting with Jean about some great stories about her horses.

Fantastic and professional crew
Aug 2018 • Couples
We were on the dinner ride and it did not disappoint. Jean and her crew were very professional and made the evening enjoyable. Thy matched the horses with the level of experience to the riders in the group. The trail ride to the old western town was fantastic.

Once at the old town, dinner was ready and the entertainment was already planning. The chartering staff from Marriott was top notch and attentive. To top it all off, the food was fantastic!

Once dinner was completed, Jean had several props to put on to take pictures. She also took the time o teach all of us how to rope a “cow”.

I would highly recommend the dinner ride or a trial ride with Jean at the Marriott Ranch.

Cattle Drive
May 2018 • Friends
Visited on May 27 with 4 friends. Arrived about an hour early and dropped by the Marriott Ranch B and B and we were offered coffee and rolls as final preparations were underway for the cattle drive. Notable because the B and B was not expecting us and was preparing a group breakfast for a wedding party. Very hospitable.

The cattle drive is directed toward more experienced riders. Safety is a major consideration with briefings and a ratio of close to one “wrangler” for every rider. The aim of the drive was to find, herd, and drive 50 to 100 head of Angus cattle spread over about 2000 acres of beautiful, rolling Virginia countryside. We rounded up about 70 and moved them across much of the ranch.

We took a break and had a delightful, nutritious buffet at the B and B. Just what hungry “cow hands” needed.

Riders’ abilities were matched to the horses’ traits. Wranglers led small groups of riders as we started our roundup and drive. Wranglers were in touch with one another through hand held radios and gave specific instructions to us “cow hands” so we could operate as efficiently as possible.

Without going on at length it was a great experience in a pleasant setting. Expect to do a little work and to get your hands a little dirty. But you will meet nice people and be guided by horse professionals.

I have also had experience with the trail rides offered for groups of people of all levels of riding experience. Talk to Jean French and her folks. You won’t go wrong.
