Beautiful trail, but it's a bit too flat for me. Gets kinda monotonous and there are generally a few too many people on there for me during the pandemic.

We love to hike/walk and did so on this trail twice. The hikers were considerate and called out when approaching from behind. The trail was in very good condition offering views of the forests by the trail and parts of two college campuses.

We entered the Chessie trail from Buena Vista and rode up to Lexington. The View was spectacular and the trail was well cats. We even enjoyed some encounters with cows and butterflies. We found a great place to go down to the water to swim as it follows the Maury River. In Lexington we found a fantastic restaurant to go to that is only a half mile up the road from the trail the name of the restaurant is Muchacho Alegre. The food was fabulous! The service was great! We had a dog with us, but could not bring the dog into the patio area. They were okay with my friend Jenny just tying her to the post and keeping the dog outside the patio area. I highly recommend this restaurant and the bike trail

We enjoy hiking the Chessie Trail...or at least we did at one time. We take our dog along to enjoy the experience as well. However, there are so many dogs running off-leash, that we may not return. On occasion, we have experienced a near-scuffle (that's putting it nicely) when an off-leash dog sees our dog, and charges over. This makes us very uncomfortable, makes our on-leash dog afraid, affording a very unpleasant experience. At times, the dog owner laughs it off, not even having a clue that their dog has done any wrong, even going so far as to not even calling their dog back.

Until the leash law is enforced, we'll not be returning. It's sad when people ignore the "rules of the road."

I own property on the opposite bank from the trail in
Lexington. It is a beautiful stretch of river there but please be careful if you go swimming. The depth can go from a foot to 10 feet deep very fast. I saved a few folks from drowning one day there when I was in my boat. Otherwise, it's a nice scenic hike on flat ground.

We were visiting Lexington VA and looking for something to do. Read some reviews of the Chessie Trail and decided to give it a try. We drove over to a little parking area near the Lexington side of the trail and then took off on a hike. We went about 2 miles of the 7 mile trail as we had to walk back also. The trail was very picturesque and good for walking or jogging. The views of the river were very pretty. I wish we could have walked the entire trail but 7 miles each way would have been too much. I didn't research a way to go one way and catch a ride back. I wish I had. Oh well, maybe next time.

We greatly enjoyed the walk from mile marker 1 to 2 and back. River on one side, cliffs on the other - saw deer, flowers, lots of birds and insects, so the kids enjoyed it. Note that the trail was closed between mile market 0.5 and 1 for bridge maintenance, so you'll want to park along Buena Vista road a bit east of Rte 11 - there was plenty of parking on a Sunday when we were there (near the Lexington start). You don't miss much- the first half mile is a walk behind an industrial area, although also next to a beautiful part of the Maury River. From mile marker 0 to 2 it was definitely possible to ride bikes - we wished we had brought ours, in fact so we could go a bit farther with a 3 year old. Would definitely return the next time we are in the area.
