Great Winery
Aug 2021 • Family
Great family day at the winery enjoyed by all. The kids loved the koi pond and the horses. We enjoyed all of the wines. The charcuterie and mezze board selection was delicious. The prices were very reasonable. We will be back.

If you're looking for wine, keep on driving.

We decided to stop here on our way home because we haven't been before. Several friends told us it was not worth it, and we should've listened, but wanted to try it anyway. The wines were definitely different, but they were not drinkable. They lacked any depth or complexity, while giving a bad smell on the nose and bad taste in your mouth. By the second or third one, we were just dumping them out. It was the only winery we've ever been to where we wanted to just get up and leave mid-tasting. Their single bathroom was also disgusting. Moldy looking ceiling, peeling wallpaper, broken sink, and a door that still has a gap where you can see out into the hallway. If I could rate this winery a zero, I would.

Friendly Staff... Wines weren't very good
Apr 2021
While in the Richmond area we decided to give Grayhaven a try… The young lady working there was quick to greet us and she was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The venue itself is very rundown, and since they weren’t allowing customers inside, I couldn’t imagine how tastings and visit will be during inclement weather.

The style of wine they make and offer is South African, which I tend to enjoy. The wines we tried that they make were just OK, one was horrible, but that’s just our feeling of it – to each their own. We did find a wine they offered, which was imported from another winery in South Africa that we enjoyed, so we stayed and had a glass or two from that bottle.

Can’t say that we’d return, not much scenery to enjoy while sitting & sipping. The koi pond was decent, but that was about it.

Best Port I've had!
Dec 2019
While traveling home, we stopped in on a whim to this winery, in the heart of Virginia's wine country.
We had a wine tasting, which consisted of some South African wines (juice imported and bottled here), some local red and white, and a Port (Rivercrest) which was excellent - very sweet but they insisted this is solely the sugar from the original wine/brandy. A bit pricey - we bought 2 bottles for about $65 (can't find receipt). We also bought a couple bottles of a white South African wine - Floriography, made with a mix of grapes which we thought were an interesting taste. These were about $20 each if I recall.
The tasting room is on a family farm, with free-ranging horses and friendly dogs - a pleasant view. They had a fire pit going, with chairs and even supplied the fixings for s'mores! Luckily it was an unusually warm late December day so we took advantage. While there, we met one of the owners, an ex-pat from South Africa, which explains the unusual source of the wines. He was pleasant and made the stay even more enjoyable.
Unusual in my experience, the price of the tasting wasn't deducted from our wines.

Wonderful afternoon
Apr 2019 • Couples
Spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon at this boutique winery. Lovely farm with 12 acres of grapes, a 1714 barn, gorgeous handcrafted doors, Koi pond, horses, dogs and peaceful scenery. Very nice wine tasting, with personable conversation from the owner himself (Deon) and a mix of whites, reds and dessert port. The wines are made in a handcrafted, Old World style and the attention to quality shows.
Max, one of the owners, gave us a detailed tour of the winery and it was fascinating to see the older press that is used to ensure equal crushing. Her tour was informative, upbeat and funny. The owner’s love for wine is evident— if you’re looking for a “commercial” experience with mass production, ginormous machines, fruity koolaid flavored wine and group tours, this is not it. But if you’re looking for quality wine made by people who like to honor time-tested traditions and are acutely attuned to the terrain/ ecosystems affecting their wine, then you’re in the right place. Great experience! Highly recommend the Sojourn and Pinotage. :)

Great tasting
Very personable tasting, good service, and brought home some reds. We were sure off the beaten path, but it was worth it. We’re going back and get a cheese plate with a tasting next time. Take the time to go.

What a Quaint Place!
This was the 2nd stop on our girls’ afternoon out. We arrived amid torrential rainfall and almost didn’t make it. But, so glad we did! Max was so knowledgeable about her wines, the grapes; and then her dad stopped in with stories about Virginia and the area. Her South African hubby was a riot as well and shared how they started doing their South African festival in September. The wines were good, the sangria excellent... but, best reason to visit here - the people!! We’ll be back!

Quaint place, tasty wines

Be sure to try the Red Blend....it was our favorite but if you're looking for something very refreshing both white & red Sangrias were delicious. We shared a picnic under the huge cedar trees & enjoyed catching up with family & relaxing.

Just do it!
This place is so off the beaten path that you feel lost. Get lost! A tiny winery that just melts your heart. Skip the pretentious Charlottesville winery’s and enjoy! This is a place where you get to KNOW the vintners. When you experience a place that just makes wine for pure enjoyment rather than serving the uppity people who demand the same taste day in and out...that is Grayhaven. Take the tour, pet the dogs, meet the bottler, and enjoy the cheese tray. Wow! Find your new favorite winery just as we did!

Chemical Taste
Feb 2018 • Solo
This winery is tucked off the main drag and is just beautiful. The parking is a little confusing but soon I was inside where I was greeted by the owner Dion. He is from South Africa and did his wines like back home. Sadly the wines are seemed to have a chemical taste at least to me. None of them tasted very good and I left empty handed.
