This is a very pretty place outside and inside, but our wine "expert" left a lot to be desired. She acted totally "put out" that she had to do a tasting for us. Don't recall her name, but we most likely will not go back when we visit the area again in the fall of 2020. The wines we tasted were "ok", but we thought were quite pricey.

Looks and feels like a slice of Europe in Virginia. We love the setting. Staff was very friendly. They have a nice little sitting area up stairs that is quaint. The wines were very fine and prices affordable. They had something for every one wine wise...if you like Red, Desert, Sweet, etc.

On the way back from our Wintergreen Resort home, we stopped at Horton Vineyards primarily for future reference (i.e., summer, sitting outside with food, wine, and our dog). When we arrived, we were the only visitors. We left our Shetland Sheepdog in the car, but quickly determined that he was welcome, so brought him in. We then engaged in a tasting of 10 wines (i.e., a thimbleful of each), found most to be pleasant. Note: we had previously had the Horton Viognier and have found it excellent among various viogniers. Rating Horton: customer service was great; Caitlin, granddaughter of the founder, was excellent -- knew her wines and answered questions about the winery, her ambitions, other wineries in the area, etc. Wines were decent and we bought a bottle of their chocolate infused wine (don't know when we will drink it, but...). The ambiance was great since we had the place to ourselves. I had read somewhere previously that the people at Horton's were unfriendly. Not the case, happily. We will return in the spring or summer. It was a bonus that our Sheltie was welcome, which was not the case at Early Mountain, which we had visited a few days before.

Horton Vineyards has a lovely building with a beautiful tasting room. Picnic tables are outside and there is plenty of room to spread out. Our frustration came when we entered the tasting room. There were probably 20 people in there milling around, waiting for their tasting flights, and standing in line to order and there was one employee. We got in line hoping that was how we ordered a flight. We did not get a paper with the available wines until we got to the register and then we had to make a fast choice of which wines we wanted to taste out of a large list. The employee took a paper plate and with an ink pen and wrote our choices on the plate, we paid, and then waited with others. People kept coming in and getting in line and the register kept ringing, but those of us waiting for wines kept waiting. From the time we got in line until we got our wines was about 45 minutes. When we did get the wines it was the very smallest of a taste each in a small paper cup sitting on the paper plate name of the wine. We took it outside where it was rather windy and chilly. Because of COVID no tastings were done in the tasting room. People must really like some of their wines as plenty of people in line were buying bottles. The employee seemed to be efficient and she did not seem rushed but new people were coming in and getting in line and being taken care of while the rest of us waited.

Horton Vineyards has an impressive looking building as you approach. COVID seems to have taken the wind out of this establishment. Staff presentation of the various wines for the flight sample was poor. Wine samples were put in clear plastic mini-cups and on a paper plate and labeled so poorly I didn't know which wine I was drinking. Wife got a "glass" of Dowager (Barrel Aged Rkats) served in a clear plastic cup. We both agreed it had a watered down, flavorless taste. The Stonecstle Red tasting in my flight was more to my liking.
Tasting is not permitted in the building due to COVID, but picnic tables are available on the lawn. Grape vines are readily accessible from the lawn and they appeared very well maintain. The leaves were dark green - is that a good thing?
We will not be back as there are better tasting experiences in the area.

Visited this winery for the first time during our most recent Charlottesville trip. The sign out front with the mileage to Napa was the best part. The potholes on the way up to the tasting room are sure to keep anyone with a low vehicle away. The tasting room was small in in disarray, with bottles of wine and stuff everywhere - not very welcoming or photographic. The lone woman behind the counter looked like she just rolled out of bed and wore her PJs to work that day. Ordered a flight and waited until she took orders from several others. Finally filled up a paper plate with bathroom Dixie cups and had to take them upstairs to the church hall. I call it that because it was folding tables and chairs strewn about. The wine was awful, didn't even finish it. One of the worst we've been to.

The Horton Tasting building is a pretty castle-like structure with several shady picnic tables outside. They make sooo many wines, including many fruit wines. The tastings are $6 for 5. The wine is served in little Dixie cups - we probably made the mistake of ordering dry-type wines which were weak and tasted the same. Maybe their sweet fruit wines were better.

Terrible terrible experience. Okay, so first, wine pourer smelled horrible. Sounds odd right? Was so weird for us too. Too many wines with so many labels and no consistency. If you’re in the area go for real wine. Skip this place.

This is a beautiful award-winning winery in a lovely pastoral setting. The sommelier was friendly, helpful, and so welcoming! One of our party had a guest accidentally break a wine glass she had purchased some years ago and they found her a replacement! Service above and beyond. We got a bottle of delicious Niagra wine with some cheese straws and sat comfortably in the arbor enjoying the beautiful spring weather. We will definitely be back and cannot recommend this stop highly enough!

We understand that with Covid19 things are a bit different so we can forgive the Dixie paper cups. However, the staff was rude and unhelpful. The wines all tasted like the wax from the paper cups, so there was no way to know if they had any wines of decent quality. The interior of the building was worn and not well kept. Should have listened to our tour guide and skipped this one.

I do not think there are any wineries I did not enjoy! The best, so far, were Horton, Barboursville. The first wine tour we did was the Bedford wine trail (best to do a "wine trail" by regions, as Peter stated above). They were small wineries, but fun. Actually, I think it has a lot to do with attitude. The Jefferson winery was great. We (my husband and I) saw a family there, they treated the kids well, as did the Peaks of Otter (fun, fruit wines, fun winery to visit, NOT fancy!).
As I said, so far, we have not been to a vineyard we did not enjoy!!!
