Allow about an hour to peruse the exhibits on the music and musicians of the Blue Ridge. Local musicians have free jam sessions in the afternoon. Open seasonally, so be sure to check days of operation in advance.

Not being from the area, I enjoyed learning more about the musical culture around the Blue Ridge area. This was my favorite visitor center stop while touring the parkway.

Well done museum. Not so large as to be overwhelming but very informative. Nicely sequenced history of his American music developed and evolved.

We visited Galax specifically to view this museum and were not disappointed. A detailed, in-depth display of the roots of Appalachian music--Scotch-Irish, German, African--together with abundant audio and video supplementing the text displays.

The museum itself takes about an hour or so but you will want to sit and listen to the locals playing outside for a while. We were there about 2-1/2 hrs and it was well worth it!
