We are a family of 5, so we rented 3 deluxe tubes and a standard raft. The check in staff was very efficient and pleasant. The driver for our little personal bus was also pleasant. Once we got our tubes and raft, off we went. It was a bit cloudy with some spotty showers, however the rain cleared up about half way through our trip. Overall the trip was relaxing, exciting and a great time. Once we completed our trip back at FRC, the two young men that were there to "assist" the customers with their rentals, were not very assisting. The three tubes we rented were tied to each other and to our raft with twine. One of the young men came up to us and said carry your tubes and life jackets up to the store, and we will handle the raft. My husband explained that we will have to come back and empty the raft as we had some coolers and a couple of beach bags with towels. He kind of got an attitude and took his knife and cut only one of the pieces of twine, then walked away. My husband after trying to untie one of the others called him over to cut the other 2. He huffed over cutting only one of them, then again walked away. My husband then again called for him to come over and was completely ignored. We had to fight with the knot for 10 minutes to get it undone. Then my husband and children (14, 10 and 9) had to carry the tubes and life jackets up a very steep hill to return them, while I stayed with our belongings and cleaned up the raft. For the price we paid we shouldn't be responsible for having to carry your tubes and life jackets back up to the top of a very steep hill. As many all terrain vehicles they had running around they could use them to shuttle the tubes back to the main building. Other than those two minor flaws, we had a lovely day on the river.

My partner and I were looking to stay in a cabin near Shenandoah National Park for her birthday, but waited too long and every cabin in the area was booked (peak season for leaves’ color change), so we thought we would try glamping and ultimately were extremely lucky to happen upon Front Royal Outdoors. We were recommended to stay in the Massanutten tent, and the pictures do not do the view or the campsite justice. Don, the owner, was very helpful in answering my various questions regarding what to bring. Glamping can be an ambiguous term, but in this case it meant that we needed to bring very little to have our needs met. As the pictures show, outside the tent is a propane grill (with grilling tools), a small refrigerator and microwave, a full chimneyed fireplace with logs on site (you shuttle them over by a handcart), two comfortable Adirondack chairs, access to drinking water, and a private compostable toilet outside of the entrance (no smell!). Inside the tent, there was a queen bed, two lamps on end tables, a “futon” chair that recliner into a bed that would sleep a third person, an oscillating fan, a bench and coatrack, and a fire extinguisher. We brought a space heater because it was getting down to 30° temperatures and the tent held the heat well - we went at the very end of October but I don’t believe they rent much beyond then). Like I said, needs met and surpassed. The tents are not rented in winter, from our understanding, and we cannot say how the tent would perform in the middle of say summer, but it is equipped with an oscillating fan.

The tent is placed upon a platform located on a bluff that overlooks the Shenandoah river, and the actual structure/platform has overhead lighting that can be turned on or off (meaning it isn’t merely hardwired on like a streetlight that kicks on at dark. You can plunge yourself into complete darkness but for your fireplace if you so desire). Our anticipated arrival was going to be after dark, so Ryan (who manages the property and lives in a cabin nearby in case of emergencies) had done us the favor of turning it on so we could get setup. Fortunately, we arrived in advance of dark and got an extra evening of watching the sun set behind the hills and spill light onto the river in the valley below.

For the sake of the site’s (and future campers’) privacy, I won’t state the location, but it is located up on a hill off a “main” road (and I mean that to say that passing vehicles were within earshot, but no headlights were visible) but after dark there was rarely a vehicle that would go by, and it was a complete nonissue. If you’re glamping, you probably didn’t expect to be 20 miles in the middle of the woods anyway. There are a total of 4 glamping tents, but the other three—though equally equipped—don’t have the view that comes with staying in the Massanutten tent.

All in all, this location and its associated people were exceedingly nice, and we hope to make it back to this location again to experience what another season has to offer.

Had a great experience with Front Royal Outdoors. Their facilities had everything I needed and more (like a changing room and decent restrooms). There staff was personal and responsive - picked us right up when I called to say we were approaching the end of our river route, they even arrived early. And the buses were much cleaner and newer than another Shenandoah outfitters we’ve used before. Thanks for a great experience! We’ll be back.

Not really knowing what to expect I booked one of the "Glamping Tents". I booked the Massanutten tent. Concept is good. I selected this tent due to the fact that it has a cover over the entire thing. Place was pretty clean, provided carts to take luggage and wood which really helped. They supplied firewood and some basic items. This was really nicely done. They provided a gas grill, water, showers and toilets which was a nice addition. Place was easy to find and get to. Check in process was nice and check out was extremely easy. Now, some items to work on. The covering for the tent is missing tin on top so if there was a rainstorm that hit the rain would drop right onto the platform directly in front of the tent and it could be a disaster. This should be fixed. Active Wasp nest in the structure over the top and for anyone that is allergic to insect stings should take note. Tons of poison oak around the platform. Simply cut it back and trim it up. Does take much to add a nice touch. Trim the vines to overhang as you walk into the hut. Also, trash and garbage is littered throughout the property. just looks messy and not taken care of. Would be nice to have some type of cover that hangs down when that sun begins to set it hits you right in your face and will roast you if you are sitting on the platform. Please note in the description that the platform overlooks the river there is not way to access it from the campsite unless you want to scale 100 of steep rocks. Good little tid-bit of info. Bugs are vicious at the camp (nothing you can do about that, might want to stress how important bug spray is) . We also booked a float trip using the same company. That was nice except that the people checking us in didn't exactly tell us about kids life jackets at all and only knew about them by the time we got on the bus. Luckily the driver got off and got us some insisting that they should have instructed us. Also, we had 4 rafts a cooler raft. They make you carry your rafts up a road to the top. Now, with one raft this isn't an issue but when you have little kids and a cooler raft they should at least take them on the trailer that was attached to the Gator up the hill for us. I noticed older ladies struggling to get up the hill with the rafts and it was pretty sad to see the lack of help from an organization.

The guy that manages the phones when you call for information is extremely rude. I called to ask him if I would miss my reservation at 11 AM and he said I’m confused by that and then proceeded to be extremely rude explaining to me that I actually booked at 12 PM and said 11 AM. He should not have a job in customer service. Olivia was very nice when we arrived and took great care of us. The river is very slow and often times we were not moving or stuck in several places. When we did reach the end the team did not meet us to help us carry our tubes back up instead that was our responsibility. I think they should have people standing by assisting us and carrying tubes back up to the main location. Andre was our bus driver and he was extremely sweet and very informative.

This was my first time attending and about ½ a mile until the exit we ended up getting caught in a thunder storm. We had to get out of the river and ended up on the side of a river by a picnic table. We contact Front Royal Tubing and they came and found us, helped us get all our stuff out of the river and loaded on the bus and took us back to the main facility. Great customer service!

Easy to book online and great friendly service when we arrived. River was a little low when we kayaked in mid-September, but still a beautiful and enjoyable time. Highly recommend if you are in the Shenandoah or DC area -- it isn't as far away as you might think!

My daughter and her boyfriend were visiting from college and wanted to do something adventurous and fun. My husband, my mother and I all agreed. We could probably handles 5 mile paddling adventure. My 68 year old mother and I shared a tandem sit on top Kayak as did my daughter and her boyfriend. My husband a novice paddler choose to have his own Kayak. We ended up doing the 7 mile 1/2 day trip as recommended when we got there. The river was extremely low and had we done the 5 mile State park trek we would have been doing lots of portaging. We had a blast and will definitely be doing this again. Staff was so friendly and helpful.

Don’t tube on this section of the Shenandoah unless the river level is “high normal“ in volume and flow rate (measured in cubic feet per second - CFS). Check the river gauge website that they provide.

The company is fabulous, and the equipment is good, but tubing in a slow river isn’t. We still had fun. We tied our tubes together, hung out, chatted, and had snacks and drinks, but the river ride was less than exciting. As canoes and kayaks passed us by, we wished we had done that instead. I wish a staff member had suggested that.

An experience for sure. Went river tubing on one of the hottest days of the year. The staff is super nice, the tubes are in good shape, and they have all the facilities you need (bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, a store, ect). Just a forewarning: the river tubing is not a relaxing 2-3 hour float. The river was slow & even stagnant in places, you have to keep moving from one side to another, and was out there for almost 4 1/2 hours. It’s a strenuous workout and I even had to get out of the tube multiple times because of getting stuck. My cousin and I chose tubing because I’ve gone on the James River and you just relax and the current takes you. This was not that type of trip at ALL. Check their report first and if it says the water is low skip and kayak instead!
