About
The 18th-century Belmont estate was the country home and studio of prominent portraitist, muralist, and American Impressionist painter Gari Melchers (1860-1932). The house contains Gari and Corinne Melchers’ original furnishings and personal art collection, the studio houses over 1600 works by Melchers, and the 27-acre grounds feature restored formal gardens and miles of walking trails. The site is also home to the Stafford County Visitor Center.

Having seen the signs on I-95 for Geri Melcher’s Belmont Estate for years, my wife and I finally visited the artist’s home and studio. In two hours, we learned about one of the most prominent artists of the early 20th Century, saw his studio and dozens of his sketches and paintings, toured his home and the surrounding grounds. You can see the 1790s home just the Melchers lived in it, with their own furniture and artwork. Knowledgeable docents added to an enjoyable learning experience. Entrance to the studio and gallery plus guided tour of the home costs $10/person, $9 for AAA members.

This is a wonderful spot for a pandemic afternoon get away. Located half-way between DC and Richmond, just off I-95. The home and studio are both very interesting and the experience is greatly enhanced by very knowledgeable docents. Tours are limited to 4 people plus the docent. All appropriate COVID precautions are visibly in place and we felt very safe. There are picnic tables and several hiking trails to enjoy as well. Highly recommend.

As history buffs, we consider a trip a failure if we don’t hit EVERY historical spot available! This home was on the Timeless Ticket in Fredericksburg, so we had to go. We thought this was simply a home tour, as we were unfamiliar with Gari Melcher the artist.

The home itself is a time capsule of the Melchers life, and the studio on the property is phenomenal. Both Melchers painted and their work is amazing! Fredericksburg is incredibly lucky to have this large and complete studio in tact! If you are an art fan at all,we HIGHLY recommend a stop!

Plenty of free parking. Located just across the Rapahannock.

If you are visiting 3 or more sites in Fredericksburg you should purchase the timeless ticket at the visitors center. See the breakdown in the pictures below.

I have lived most of my life in the Fredericksburg, VA area and I am a Fredericksburg Artist myself. Passed by the signs to the Belmont Estate many times till one day I decided to look it up on the net and then go with wife and kids in tow.

A most wonderful experience. Gari is truly one of the world's most masterful Artists! His estate is as it was left by his wife with the furnishing, original paint colors, etc. It is a beautful place. You walk into his studio and you can almost smell the linseed oil in the paint... it is almost as if you are waking into an active studio and Gari Melcher is alive today. I am infatuated with his studio equipment... the brushes, calipers, paints, etc. and have researched some of he paint brands and some of the companies still exist today.

My favorite piece is the painting of his wife, Corrianne, which is just inside his studio to the right. She was a very beautiful woman and an artist herself. I think one of her paintings can be seen in the house.

Find the website online and go when there is a special show. The location has a large inventory of his drawings and painting and they change the exhibits from time to time and even bring in some outside artist exhibits. In the Spring they have events where folks attend in period costume.

My kids like to walk down the back path to the Rappahanock and play in the water there where I imagine Gari and Corriane also spend time sunning/swimming. Becareful of the road down there you must cross though... cars come around the bend fast--hold onto your kids!

What an incredible place and a good place to hold events too... they have an event building for weddings, etc. You have a daughter getting married and she is an artist? This is where she would be honored most!! An unforgettable experience.

We happened upon this hidden gem and are so glad we did. The video gives a good intro to this artist. A tour includes the studio that contains some of his works and his supplies, sketches, etc.. We also enjoyed the lovely home (and great views) and gardens. The docents were very helpful and knowledgeable.

Gari Melchers is not a well known name in American art, but after visiting his home and studio and seeing his art work, one gets a better appreciation of him and his work. The place is in a beautiful setting in Falmouth, north of Fredericksburg, just off Route 17. The home is from the 1790s and was donated to the state by his wife who lived there for many years and died in the 1950s, so the place has original furnishings. The studio is as he left it when he died. There is a guided tour of the house and you can visit the studio and museum and tour it on your own. There are a number of walking trails on the property. There is a film of his work and life in the visitors center. Entrance fee is $10, but there is a AAA discount of $9.

This house is beautiful. Overlooking the Rappahannock, the gorgeous Belmont House boasts exquisite gardens and all the beauties nature has to offer.

My girlfriend and I were delighted by our visit, until we were about to leave through the gift shop. As we were leaving we overheard one of the women working in the gift shop make an incredibly disparaging comment against Muslims. My girlfriend and I were aghast. What would have been our flawless visit left a bad taste in our mouth for this house and those who manage it. As I write this review, I am still so disappointed by what I heard.

I will never recommend this location to anyone, unless said individual wants to enjoy beautiful scenery surrounded by a bigoted staff.

We too were equally aghast to learn about what you overheard at our property. Please accept our sincere apologies for the deep offense you experienced, and be assured that the narrowmindedness of one does not reflect the values of a whole, for we certainly do not tolerate any expressions of bigotry. Our staff knows better. Also, thank you for bringing it to our attention. We are taking this incident very seriously and the appropriate action will be taken. We will use this opportunity to work intentionally with staff to make something positive out of a disturbing episode. Again, we are so sorry for the unhappy closure of your visit.

We had never heard of Julius Garibaldi (aka Gari) Melchers, but kept seeing a sign for his estate during a brief visit to Fredericksburg. A google search revealed he was a painter of some distinction around the turn of the last century and his home was worth a visit. So instead of heading home we spent another night. The attraction includes a gift shop and reception area where a very pleasant young lady welcomed us with a brief video. We then joined others for a tour of the manor house and nearby studio. We explored the grounds on our own. A great place, beautifully situated and maintained. A treasure.

I have been to Belmont a few times since I went to college in town. I also attended a friends' wedding many years ago. This time I brought my entire family. My kids enjoyed the house tour and the art gallery. The staff had scavenger hunts for the kids to find features. If we weren't going home that day we would have stayed longer and enjoyed the grounds. Nice place to visit and will come back more.

This famous American painter, who amongst other painted a portrait of President Roosevelt, spent much of his working life in Egmond aan Zee in the Netherlands. There he became a real friend of the local population, several of which he painted in a very authentic way. The paintings are in over 40 museums in the US and Europe. However many of them are in his old atelier of his home in Falmouth. It also worthwhile to stroll over the premises and to visit the house where worked. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about what is on exposition.
