A visit to Footprints of Joy is inspiring. They deserve five stars just for the work they are doing. Providing a shelter for rescue animals, the staff is currently caring for over 150 dogs, 40 cats, 60 donkeys and 20 horses.
The needs are great. As the Romanian operation for Save the Dogs and Other Animals, based in Milan, their charges include 30 dogs retrieved from a shelter in Ukraine that had been bombed. They are also supporting a welcome tent at the border on the Danube River to help refugees arriving by ferry with their pets needing veterinarian care, food and supplies.
The day we visited they were starting construction to increase capacity. Visitors are welcome, but keep in mind, the facility is not a petting zoo but rather it is built to house animals in need. The staff will most likely be more involved with those tasks. Off season you would do well to phone ahead to determine a good arrival time. It’s easy to find outside of Cernavoda. There is plenty of parking and no entry fee. Financial contributions are welcome.
