As a Culpeper resident, I’ve been to the museum several times but I never took the time to really pay attention to the exhibits. My son is a pressed penny collector so I decided to take him to learn a little about the county he lives in and get a penny. It was so nice and informative. Our little area is so full of history and it made me happy that my son was able to enjoy it.

Pastel Paintings by Internationally Known Local Artist Elisabeth Piatt Currently on Display at the Culpeper Museum –by Bonnie Dixon
When you enter the Culpeper Museum you may be expecting to see historical exhibits about Culpeper history and walk past the display of six landscapes by featured local artist Elisabeth Piatt. They are hung on an interior wall along a corridor opposite doors leading outside to the railroad platform. Don’t pass up the opportunity to spend time absorbing the experience they offer.
I stood across the corridor, with my back against the outside door, marveling at the depth and subtlety depicted in these works which portray aspects of the local landscape through different seasons. At first, I experienced some annoyance they were not given a more prominent space. However, as I took in their depth and scenery this ceased to matter. Led by this artist's loving hand, each painting invited me in for a long walk deep into a seasonal scene. The softness and subtlety of the artist's strokes compressed the experience of time spent breathing fresh air and distance traveled. This magic happens without looking through a window or actually being on site making the word “landscape” feel like Earth beneath your feet. Don’t miss it.
Also take note of the dramatic panels at the entrance to the Museum by local Madison artist Trish Crowe and a famous quote by Walt Whitman.

My husband and I were in Culpeper on some business and had an hour to kill so started driving around to check out the town. We came across the train station with this small museum. SO glad we stopped. For a small space, they really packed in Culpeper's history from dinosaur prints to one of the best collections of handmade lace I've ever come across. Well worth your time to cruise through. When you are finished with the museum, walk down the hall to the train station and check out their collection of dining car china. It's a step back in time.

The Museum of Culpeper History is a wonderful place to get to know the area through its past. Workshops include lacemaking as well as an exhibit on the art. Authentic dinosaur tracks are on display along with memorabilia of the region's civil war history.

This museum shares a space in an old train station which is really all it needs. Culpeper is not very big but there is a lot of Civil War history here and it is presented very well. You will be here less than an hour, but will get a lot of info for your time.

While staying in the down town we stopped in to check out the local museum. The lady working this day was gracious, enthusiastic and very helpful. There is a bit of something to please most everyone here, all revolving around the local history. Worth the time.

We have been several times as the Museum changes it themes often. Currently, it is the Civil War. Entrance fee is low and if you are a resident of Culpeper it is free.

Stumbled on this really nice little museum when wandering around town. Nicely presented history of the area with intriguing commentary particularly on the Civil War era with some good exhibit and a really great kid's area with costumes and toys. Learned a lot about what a critical part the area played in the War.

We went in just to have a look around. I love old rail stations. What a great surprisd. So much history packed in so small a space. From colonization through revution, civil war, reconstruction and so much more, it all comes to.life and is hosted by a caring staff. If in the area don't pass this by.
