Yesterday we went back to Westmoreland State Park, as we are guests travel writers for the Virginia State Park system but had not yet kayaked, ever! I already knew it was a beautiful Park but wanted to get pictures close up of the amazing cliffs that you can only reach by kayak. The park is famous for its historic CCC... More

We have visited Westmoreland State Park on multiple occasions and have had a great time on each visit! We own a small pop up camper, have 2 dogs and a 4 year old. We have stayed in both campgrounds A and B. The only difference is one has paved roads, the other is still a dirt surface. Campground A has... More

First off, the place is expensive, but there are a LOT of things to see and do if that's on your agenda. We just wanted a place to tent camp while we explored the area around it. Get ready for a fee for everything, being from out of state-add fee. Add vehicle fee. The good part is that nobody was... More

Bob I am really confused by your review. If you were camping, you didn't need to pay the parking fee or pay for swimming. When you add up those individual fees, camping is a really good deal. Yes we do charge extra for out of state visitors because Virginians' tax dollars pay for some of the park operations (so they... More

This is a great park with lots of options for activities. There are hiking trails, beaches, and a pool. I hiked the Turkey Neck Trail on a hot day in July. The trail was mostly shaded which was appreciated considering the weather. I had the trail to myself the entire time. It was well marked and easy to follow and... More

This place was just beautiful--at fossil beach, a landscape reminiscent of the pacific coast. My daughter found a shark tooth there almost immediately. we saw 4 eagles within minutes, and the trails were shaded on a hot day and beautiful. The visitor center is modern and clean.

Although we started the day with a few sprinkles and it remained overcast, we enjoyed our time. The park offers great trails that are easy access and quickly tuck away into the woods for a secluded feel. You can make hikes longer by looping several of the trails together. We visited the fossil beach and overlook, both providing great views... More

Fun place to bring the little ones for a day trip! They can run and play and stick their toes in the water! The kids like to skip rocks!

I am so glad you enjoy visiting Westmoreland State Park and thank you for taking the time to share your experience in a review for potential visitors to see. One word of warning for folks visiting on the weekends in the summer - the beach area is very crowded. Especially on the major summer holidays, the park may end up... More

We were at the park on Father's Day and everyone was there having a good time. The pool is large and the kiddie pool is also good. We fished with grandchildren and had a good fast food meal at the concession stand. Others were grilling and smells were delicious!

I am glad you had a great Father's Day visit to Westmoreland State Park and thank you for taking the time to write a review. For others thinking about visiting, Westmoreland is indeed crazy busy during summer weekends and especially holiday weekends. Sometimes we even reach maximum capacity and have to wait for visitors to leave before we can let... More

We spent Labor Day weekend (2015) in a cabin here with our two preschoolers. What a FUN trip! The park itself is lovely and well-maintained. Very near lots of history in the area. This park is in the Northern Neck of the Potomac, not far from where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake Bay. Yes, it's technically the river, but it... More

Easily accessible to the DC Metro area this State Park has been around for many years. One of the big draws here is the fossils, however the areas are not safe and so are mostly inaccessible to keep the visitors safe. You can find shark's teeth after a Nor'easter though. There are cabins and a campground, a pool (fee is... More

I am glad you enjoyed your visit to Westmoreland State Park. Thank you for sharing your great experience with prospective visitors. By the way, swimming is not an extra fee if you are staying overnight and while we do not recommend folks climb on the dunes, the fossil hunting area is open to the public. More
