We booked a 9:30-11:30 slot and it was a good thing we didn't go later. The line to get into the park when we left was almost a mile long! Go early to avoid this and any wind that may kick up on the bay.
At the site, the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and the three kayaks we rented were in great shape.
Only the single kayaks had dry storage and the tandem did not. But you can buy a dry bag for about $15 to fit everything. When we kayaked we did not see any horses but numerous birds, a bald eagle and beautiful scenery!

The man who assisted us with bike rental was super friendly and very informative about the trails. My kids loved the fact that we could bike the island versus drive in, which the car line was long mid-day. Although it is cheaper to drive in the memories made are priceless and something the children will remember a lifetime. The horses are right on the bike path with you and they were beautiful. The shop has all you need including drinks, snow globes, sunscreen. Would recommend to all.

We booked bicycles for the 2 hour trip and it was awesome having the horses running around while we biked. Two days later we booked a guided kayak tour for 3 hours. We try to always book some type of tour like this when we go on vacation and we were blown away by our tour guide. His name is Anthony and he was fun, kind, incredibly knowledgeable about both the history of Assateague and the ecosystem, and was the best tour guide we have ever had on any tour. Highly recommend this trip!!

Anthony certainly has been an amazing addition to our team this year. Sounds like you got the best of land and sea!

We reserved one single kayak and one tandem kayak for my husband and I and our 4 year old. When we arrived we realized we would be able to fit our 4 year old between us on the tandem kayak and they added the kiddie seat for us in the middle and refunded the cost of the unused single kayak with no hassle. We purchased a waterproof pouch for our cell phones and a net for our son which I expected would be overpriced but the prices were actually very reasonable. We headed north and were lucky enough to spot wild horses within less than 10 minutes along the shore. The 2 hour rental was the perfect amount of time for us, just enough of an adventure and then we hung out on the beach to swim and play in the water afterward before heading home. I would definitely rent from this group again in the future. Very satisfied.

Wife and I booked this as the end of our OC Maryland vacation experience, and we were not disappointed. Jake did a great job of keeping the young ones and the adults in our group engaged, and we saw not only horses up close totally out in the wild but also waterfowl (& maybe a bald eagle) and the water ecosystem that this area supports. Will recommend this to all willing to listen; thanks again!

We rented two bikes to do the Park Ranger Tour (offered by Assateague National Seashore). After the bike tour, our group ended up browsing their merchandise and bought some Assateague-themed shirts, sweatshirts, and a silicone wine glass (as well as some yummy ice cream treats). Helmets were provided in the bike rental, and they did have kid bikes and pull-behind child carriers / trailers for smaller kids as well. The man who rented us our bikes was absolutely hilarious and had us laughing the whole time we were there. Thanks for a great experience!!

We saw so much on our tour! From a horseshoe crab to horses, we learned all about the wildlife on the island and some of its history. Chris was a great, friendly tour guide and knew a lot about the islands. The location was also fantastic and convenient for parking, but we did notice it was super crowded upon returning so I recommend an early tour time. Overall great time!

We agree that the morning is the best time to get out. It’s less crowded and there’s more wildlife to see. Thanks for taking time to write a review!

First time to the island (or seashore). Rented two kayaks for 2 hours. A bit more expensive than most places I've rented from but understandable as they are the only concession there. The kayaks were clean and comfortable. Saw horses within minutes. We enjoyed our paddle trip very much. One thing to keep in mind is that they do not let you pay at the booth - you have to make reservations on line and, at least for T-mobile and ATT customers- you will not have phone service once you are on the island.

Our family of 8 visited Assateague Island last week and took the Kayak Wildlife Discovery Tour. We had an amazing time. We had three generations on our family trip ages 4 to 60 and had 4 tandem kayaks. Anthony was our tour guide and was so knowledgeable on the area. Anthony customized the trip to what we wanted to do and made our experience perfect. We stopped twice on the shore and had the opportunity to explore. We saw some horses, horseshoe crabs, turtles, crabs, fish and many different birds. We didn't know there were so many types of seagulls and Anthony knew them all! The tour was wonderful, and Anthony made it so much better with his knowledge and kindness. Everyone at Assateague Outfitters was very nice and even went to another location to get the right size t shirt that my granddaughter wanted. Before the tour I was a little concerned about taking my 4-year-old grandson on this tour, but it was very safe, the water is very shallow around the shore and coves and the tandem kayaks worked very well. I would highly recommend.

We did the Wildlife Discovery Guided Tour and I would highly recommend this to anyone with kids who are interested in animals or the environment. It wasn’t a “paddle and look” tour. Our guide Dave got everyone out of their kayaks for a hands on experience. We learned about birds, clams, crabs and fish. The water is very shallow in the bay so this is great for beginner paddlers.
